Acoustic Design of Ancient Buildings: the Odea of Pompeii and Posillipo
buildings Article Acoustic Design of Ancient Buildings: The Odea of Pompeii and Posillipo Giuseppe Ciaburro *, Gino Iannace , Ilaria Lombardi and Amelia Trematerra Department of Architecture and Industrial Design, Università degli Studi della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, Borgo San Lorenzo, 81031 Aversa (Ce), Italy; [email protected] (G.I.); [email protected] (I.L.); [email protected] (A.T.) * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +39-0818122530 Received: 10 October 2020; Accepted: 25 November 2020; Published: 2 December 2020 Abstract: In this paper, a typology of a building erected in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome is described: the Odeon. The Odeon is a covered building, but more modest in size than traditional open-air theatres without roofs. The Odeon could hold a few hundred spectators and therefore a smaller audience. The roof covering allowed the possibility of meetings even in adverse weather conditions. The etymology of the word of the Odeon (covered theatre) means the place of the ode, or of the songs. In this paper are discussed the architectonic and acoustic characteristics of the Odea of Pompeii and Posillipo. With commercial software (Odeon, Room Acoustics Software, Lyngby Denmark) we assess the acoustic characteristics of the Odea of Pompeii and Posillipo in the presence of an original roofing system and show that these buildings were well suited for music, songs and speech. Keywords: ancient theatres; Odeon; cavea; orchestra; reverberation time; audience 1. Introduction The ancients had no scientific knowledge of the physics of sound; they relied on the observation and interpretation of natural phenomena in a mythological key and through oracles. -

Ptolemaic Foundations in Asia Minor and the Aegean As the Lagids’ Political Tool
ELECTRUM * Vol. 20 (2013): 57–76 doi: 10.4467/20800909EL.13.004.1433 PTOLEMAIC FOUNDATIONS IN ASIA MINOR AND THE AEGEAN AS THE LAGIDS’ POLITICAL TOOL Tomasz Grabowski Uniwersytet Jagielloński, Kraków Abstract: The Ptolemaic colonisation in Asia Minor and the Aegean region was a signifi cant tool which served the politics of the dynasty that actively participated in the fi ght for hegemony over the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea basin. In order to specify the role which the settlements founded by the Lagids played in their politics, it is of considerable importance to establish as precise dating of the foundations as possible. It seems legitimate to acknowledge that Ptolemy II possessed a well-thought-out plan, which, apart from the purely strategic aspects of founding new settlements, was also heavily charged with the propaganda issues which were connected with the cult of Arsinoe II. Key words: Ptolemies, foundations, Asia Minor, Aegean. Settlement of new cities was a signifi cant tool used by the Hellenistic kings to achieve various goals: political and economic. The process of colonisation was begun by Alex- ander the Great, who settled several cities which were named Alexandrias after him. The process was successfully continued by the diadochs, and subsequently by the follow- ing rulers of the monarchies which emerged after the demise of Alexander’s state. The new settlements were established not only by the representatives of the most powerful dynasties: the Seleucids, the Ptolemies and the Antigonids, but also by the rulers of the smaller states. The kings of Pergamum of the Attalid dynasty were considerably active in this fi eld, but the rulers of Bithynia, Pontus and Cappadocia were also successful in this process.1 Very few regions of the time remained beyond the colonisation activity of the Hellenistic kings. -

The Jews of Aphrodisias: New Evidence and Old Problems
Originalveröffentlichung in: Scripta Classica Israelica 21, 2002, S. 209-242. The Jews of Aphrodisias: New Evidence and Old Problems Angelos Chaniotis 1 1. The 'donor inscriptions' and their puzzles Aphrodisias, site of a famous sanctuary of Aphrodite, important center of urban life in 2 Roman Asia Minor, and the capital of the province of Caria in Late Antiquity, has at- tracted considerable attention among students of Judaism since the publication by Joyce Reynolds and Robert Tannenbaum of two important inscriptions conceming the Jewish community (Fig. 1). The two texts give the names of 68 Jews, three proselytes, and 54 theosebeis ('god-fearers'), thus attesting the existence of a large and apparently 3 prospering Jewish community at Aphrodisias. Unfortunately, this is the only uncontro- versial Statement one can make about these inscriptions, which I will call — for the sake of convenience — the 'donor inscriptions'. Almost all issues related to this monument, including the date of the two texts, their relation to one another, the interpretation of the 4 introductory text written on one of the two inscribed faces, the interpretation of the 5 word patella or patelläs and the nature of the 'memoriaF (mnemeiori) set up 'for the 6 relief of the people from grief , the question whether the 'godfearers' {theosebeis) con- stituted a separate group (persons that attended the synagogue without being fully 1 All dates are CE, if not otherwise stated. Abbreviations of epigraphic corpora are those of the Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum (see Index XXXI-XLV). 2 Recent studies on the urban development and history of Aphrodisias (with further bibliogra- phy): RouecM 1989; Roueche 1993; Ratte forthcoming I and II.
