MASER 14 and inauguration of SubOrbital Express as a service Our MASER 14 sounding rocket reached an altitude of approximately 250 kilometers and spent over six minutes in microgravity. The mission inaugurated SubOrbital Express, a service to enable research into microgravity applications, atmospheric physics or other scientific disciplines. In this microgravity environment, we conducted experiments on fluid drainage, X-ray radio graphy and dust formation. Nield, Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), addressed the future of commercial space travel: “There is tangible work underway by a number of companies aiming for space, partly because of their dreams, but primarily because they are confident it can be done by the private sector and it can be done at a profit.” Indeed, private companies and entrepreneurs are currently aiming to make this dream a reality. While the current economic downturn will likely slow industry progress, space tourism, currently in its infancy, is poised to become a significant part of the hospitality industry. Unlike the space race of the 1950s and 1960s between the United States and the former Soviet Union, the current rivalry is not defined on a national level, but by a collection of first-mover entrepreneurs that are working to define the industry and position it for long- term profitability. -

Cessna A185F Seaplane C-GVYE Taltson River (Ferguson’s Cabin) Northwest Territories 07 June 2004 Report Number A04W0114 Summary The Cessna A185F seaplane (registration C-GVYE, serial number 18503778) operated by Big River Air Ltd., departed Four Mile Lake, Alberta, on a visual flight rules flight to the Taltson River, Northwest Territories. The purpose of the flight was to transport three passengers to a site on the river known as Ferguson’s Cabin. At approximately 1700 mountain daylight time, as the aircraft was landing on the water near Ferguson’s Cabin, the left float dug in and the left wing struck the water. The aircraft immediately cartwheeled and came to rest floating inverted in the river, with only the bottoms of the floats visible at the surface. The pilot and the front seat passenger sustained serious injuries; however, they managed to exit the submerged and damaged aircraft through a broken window in the left cabin door. Four fishermen in boats responded to the accident, removed the survivors from the cold water, and transported them to a warm shelter. -

During the accompanying literature study, it was determined that the technology readiness level is sufficiently high for upper stage reusability. However, it was unsure whether a cost-effective system could be build. I have been interested in the field of Entry, Descent, and Landing ever since I joined the Capsule Team of Delft Aerospace Rocket Engineering (DARE). During my time within the team, it split up in the Structures Team and Recovery Team. In September 2016, I became Chief Recovery for the Stratos III student-built sounding rocket. During this time, I realised that there was a lack of fundamental knowledge in aerodynamic decelerators within DARE. -

Ariane 5 completes 101st successful launch BepiColombo mission on its way to Mercury Rendezvous on 5 December 2025! On the night of 19-20 October, Ariane 5 completed a flawless launch from Europe’s spaceport at the Guiana Space Centre (CSG), placing into a hyperbolic liberation orbit the BepiColombo spacecraft built by Airbus Defence & Space with a consortium of 83 firms from 16 countries. The launch was Ariane 5’s 101st flight, its fifth in 2018 and the seventh of the year from the CSG. BepiColombo is a joint mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace eXploration Agency (JAXA) to study the surface and interior structure of Mercury. The mission comprises two orbiters, the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO), renamed ‘Bepi’ by ESA, and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO), renamed Mio by JAXA, which will be inserted into orbit around Mercury on 5 December 2025. Bepi will map the entire surface of the planet and study its inner composition and structure, while Mio will analyse its magnetic field and magnetosphere, the layer of Mercury’s atmosphere where physical characteristics are governed by its magnetic field. Data gathered will provide new insights into the formation and evolution of the ‘inner’ planets of the solar system (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars). CNES has overseen development of the French contribution to the mission for all of the eight research laboratories involved. With a launch mass of 4 081 kilograms, BepiColombo comprises the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM), which will carry the two Bepi and Mio orbiters, and the MMO Sunshield and Interface Structure (MOSIF).
