Kia ora whānau

A big focus for our school this year is designing our Local Curriculum. The New Zealand Curriculum is a clear statement of what is deemed important in education. It takes as its starting point a vision of our young people as lifelong learners who are confident and creative, connected, and Upcoming actively involved and includes a clear set of principles on which to base curriculum decision making. Our Local Curriculum is the way that we Events bring the New Zealand Curriculum to life at our school by making sure it is responsive to the needs, identity, language, culture, interests, strengths and aspirations of our learners and their families Term 1 As we work through our curriculum design we have a few other documents End of Term 1 close at hand. Friday 16 April Our Values: Our Values relate to our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) statement of PRIDE - being Positive, Respectful, Involved, Start of Term 2 Disciplined, and Enthusiastic. Monday 3 May Graduate Profile: Our Graduate Profile outlines the attributes that want all our students to have by the time they are ready for Intermediate School or Scholastic Book Fair College. These are being a Life Long Learner, Active learner, Collaborative School Library Learner and Innovative Learner. Under these headings are characteristics Tuesday 11 - Monday 18 May such as risk taking, effective communication, resilience, self motivation, 8:30 - 9:30am & 2:30 - 3:30pm ownership of learning, creativity, curiosity, and resourcefulness, alongside being literate and numerate. Teacher Only Day Every Monday we have a school-wide hui where we come together to Monday 24 May share a few notices, sing some songs, and hand out certificates to children that have shown our PRIDE Values. At our Community Assemblies, we ANZAC Day observed present the Principal Awards which recognise those children who have Monday 26 May - School closed shown our Graduate Profile attributes. Our major certificates at the end of the year also relate to these qualities. Queen’s Birthday Community Voice: Late last year we sent out a community survey to get Monday 7 June - School closed feedback on what is important to you for your child’s schooling. This information is also being reviewed and discussed as part of our Local Curriculum. We are working with an external consultant this year to help us bring it all together, along with reading, writing, maths, science, music, te reo, digital technologies, NZ histories, health and PE, drama, and art. As you can see, there is a lot going on! Our plan is to ensure our Pahoia Local Curriculum ties all these things together in a way that is authentic for our Community Assembly children. What’s Happening in Waipapa?

In Waipapa we have been constructing a range of items using recycled materials. We have built our own America's Cup boats, which we trialled in the school pool. Due to a lack of wind on the day we had to make do with an alternative wind source... Mr McSeveney's leaf blower! We have also been investigating floating and sinking using a range of materials and shapes. We have been answering questions like: Does all metal sink?

Many of these activities have required us to design, build, and test our creations as part of a team. This has required us to listen and adjust our thoughts depending on the ideas of our team members. papamoa village katikati te puna
