Kia ora whānau

Today, and tomorrow, we have the team from Road Safety here working with our Year 5 and 6 students on bike road safety. The Tuhua students have had some classroom time and then out on the turf, grass and then "the road" aka our carpark. As a rural community, so many of our children don't get the chance to Upcoming practise road safety so this is a fantastic opportunity for them, one that we will continue to be part of over the coming years. Building on our desire to become an even more community spirited school, our amazing Mrs Meder has been working her grant application magic again. This Term 3 time we are the lucky recipients of grants from NZ Community Trust and the Lion Teacher Only Day Foundation. This money has been approved to replace our nearly 15 year old School Closed astro turf. The turf area is well utilised during school time, after school and at Monday 31 August weekends by members of our community. BOT Meeting Nga Mihi, Monday 7 September 6pm

We have read a local Maori Legend about Te Pura, the guardian taniwha of Wairoa, and have described and drawn what we think a taniwha looks like. Stream Study

A small group of students from Aongatete and Tūhua pods had a fantastic time thanks to the Bourke family, who allowed us to undertake a stream study on their property.

We tested the water temperature, the PH level, the flow and the clarity of the river. We also put dog meat in a sock and lowered it into the river to see if we could attract eels. No eels came this time, better luck next time!

THIS IS BLEED AREA ONLY Wow it’s Term 3, and we have been very impressed with the students in Tūhua Pod and their work ethic in both the kitchen and garden. They are setting up the greenhouse space as well as using tools like handsaws, secateurs and hammers to complete tasks. It is great to see students learning new skills and sharing what they know within their groups. It is not unusual for the adults to learn from the children in sessions, and we have been up-skilled in many topics (like honey and fungi), by our knowledgeable students. Last session we were delighted to host both Greg, the Sales and Marketing Manager from Grove Avocado Oil and Deb from the Pahoia Markets. These two businesses sponsor our Garden to Table programme each year, and it would be great if you could support them by attending a Pahoia Market or looking out for the Grove Avocado oil when you do your grocery shopping. We welcome our families and our community to become part of our programme, currently held each Monday from 8.45-12.30. Come and join the fun. [email protected] or [email protected]. Watch out for the awesome Garden to Table Cookbook coming out soon, for sale on Ag Day. This will feature the recipes our students have been cooking in 2020.

This week we planted seeds, worked in the greenhouse preparing new garden beds and pruned the orchard trees.

In the kitchen we prepared muffins, home made pita bread and spinach quiche. Sports News
