The selection of 31 Queensland swimmers and 6 Queensland coaches on the Olympic team set a new milestone for swimming in this State, and well exceeded our previous best Olympic representation 22 swimmers and 6 coaches in 2008. The feat of accomplishing two-thirds of the Australian team is all the more exceptional when weighed against the fact that Queensland swimmers make up around just one-quarter of the total national membership. Our contingent of 12 male swimmers and 19 female swimmers looks well placed to put in a strong performance in London, and with many of them aged in their teens and early 20s, to lay a rock-solid foundation for Rio in 2016. Queensland Coaches on the Australian team are Glenn Baker, Michael Bohl, Matt Brown, Denis Cotterell, Simon Cusack, and Stephan Widmer. 2011 World Championships At the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, China, Alicia Coutts and Kylie Palmer both won individual gold medals, while Stephanie Rice claimed a bronze medal. Relay medals were won by Alicia, Bronte Barratt, Kylie and Brenton Rickard. Melissa Gorman and Ky Hurst, who won a silver medal in the 5km team event, earned selection for the London Olympics by finishing in the top 10 in their respective 10km events. Queensland coaching members on the Australian team were Glenn Baker, Michael Bohl, Matt Brown, Harley Connolly, Denis Cotterell, Simon Cusack, Michael Palfery, and Stephan Widmer. 2011 Para Pan Pacific Championships Queensland swimmers performed strongly at the 2011 Para Pan Pacific Championships in Edmonton, Canada. In individual events, Kayla Clarke and Blake Cochrane both won four gold medals; Daniel Fox, three gold medals; Brenden Hall, one gold medal, three silver medals, and a bronze medal; and Grant Patterson, two silver medals and two bronze medals. Steve Hadler, Tony Keogh and Chris Phillips were Queensland coaches on the national team. 2011 World Junior Championships Bronte Campbell, Bonnie MacDonald and Cameron McEvoy continued their rapid ascent towards the top ranks of international swimmers by winning individual gold medals at the 2011 World Junior Championships in Lima, Peru. Both Bronte and Bonnie won one gold medal, while Cameron claimed two. 2 | P a g e 2011 Australian Short Course Championships Multiple gold medals winners at the 2011 Australian Short Course Championships, at which Queensland was the champion State, were Ellen Fullerton, Yolane Kukla, Kylie Palmer, Brenton Rickard, and Christopher Wright. 2011 State Teams Short Course Championships Queensland maintained its winning streak at the 2011 State Teams Short Course Championships. Queensland swimmers have won the Championships every year since its inception in 2009. As well as claiming the Champion Team trophy, our swimmers won trophies for Champion Female Team, Champion Male Team, Champion Female Team 13/14, Champion Female Team 15/16, and Champion Male Team 16/17. Queensland was once again well led by coach Matt Brown. 2012 Australian Open Championships At the 2012 Australian Open Championships, 24 of our swimmers won a total of 35 individual gold medals, culminating in Queensland repeating its performance from last year in winning both the Corbett Shield for e won three gold medals. Dual individual gold medallists were: Kylie Palmer, Leiston Pickett, Stephanie Rice, Emily Seebohm, Thomas Fraser-Holmes, Christian Sprenger, Chris Wright, Blake Cochrane, and Daniel Fox. St Peters Western won the S.B. Grange Trophy for Premier Club. 2012 Australian Age Championships -and-coming swimmers excelled yet again at the 2012 Australian Age Championships. For the 13th year in a row, Queensland took out the W.B. Phillips trophy as the Premier State. Stand-out performers amongst our emerging stars were Alanna Bowles (five individual gold medals), and Brittany Elmslie and Cameron McEvoy (four individual gold medals each). They were closely followed by Chelsea Gubecka, Shayna Jack, Taylor McKeown, Jordan Harrison, and Regan Leong, all of whom won three individual golds. Twenty-two of our coaches produced one or more gold medallists at the Championships, evidencing the 2012 Australian Open Water Championships Ten Queensland swimmers won gold medals at the 2012 Australian Age and Open Water Championships, with Queensland swimmers claiming a total of 28 medals. 2011 Queensland Championships The 2011 Queensland Championships was the largest for many years. Although the qualifying times in all events were tightened, a total of 1,707 swimmers nominated for individual events, while 1,824 swimmers competed in the relays. Seventeen Queensland coaches undertook the 12-day trip under the leadership of SQ Mentor Coach, Scott Volkers. Mr Volkers ran the tour as an educational exercise and as if the coaches were leading and/or being a team coach on an international competitive team. As well as gaining a valuable, direct insight into how international competition unfolds, the trip experience necessary to lead or, at the very least, be a competent inclusion in a team travelling overseas. This extremely important strategic investment, the benefits of which should endure for decades, required to enable them to succeed at the highest level of competition. It was generously supported by the Queensland Academy of Sport and ascta (Qld). Further extensive coach mentoring was undertaken by Mr Volkers across Queensland, and in some instances included learn-to-swim teachers. Towards the end of the year he accepted an offer to coach in development during the relatively short time he worked for SQ was invaluable and greatly appreciated by the participants concerned. He is indeed a masterful coach. Other development activities included trips to the 2011 New Zealand Short Course Championships under Head Coach, Dion Walmsley (16 swimmers and 4 coaches); to the Great Barrier Reef meet in Mackay under Head Coach, Chris Nesbit (55 swimmers and 10 coaches); and to the NSW Open Water Championships, under Head Coach, Chris Mooney (6 swimmers and one coach); a camp at Southport (34 swimmers and 5 coaches); a camp at the Sunshine Coast (22 swimmers and 5 coaches); and visits to the QAS for the Junior Platinum Squad (54 swimmers and 15 coaches) and swimmers with disability (12 swimmers and 12 coaches).
