It conducts, encourages, promotes, advances, controls and administers swimming activities throughout the State through a number of distinct functions, including: Administering the rules of swimming Registering members ↣ Educating and developing athletes, coaches, and Technical Officials ↣ Administering the sport’s funding ↣ Representing Queensland swimming at the national level and with Government ↣ Conducting and co-ordinating swimming competition ↣ Formulating and implementing policies and programs ↣ Acquiring and managing sponsorship ↣ ↣ Front Cover –Jessicah Schipper OAM, Kylie Palmer OAM, Emily Seebohm OAM, Megan Nay, Yolane Kukla 2010 Commonwealth Games 2010 Queensland Open Water Championships – Lake Kawana Blake Cochrane – 2011 Australian Championships 1 PRESIDENT’S AND CEO’S REPORT We have pleasure in submitting to members this report on Swimming Queensland’s activities during the 2010/11 financial year. 2010 Commonwealth Games Queensland led the way in Australia’s dominant performance at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, with every gold medal in able-bodied individual events being won by a current or former Queensland swimmer. Alicia Coutt’s scintillating display reaped her five gold medals and the honour of carrying the Australian flag at the closing ceremony. Other Queensland swimmers to stand on the top tier of the presentation dais in individual events were Sophie Edington, Yolane Kukla, Meagen Nay, Kylie Palmer, Leiston Pickett, Jessicah Schipper, Emily Seebohm, and Brenton Rickard. Queenslanders made up half the Australian swimming team. They were joined by coaches Glenn Baker, Michael Bohl, Matthew Brown, Denis Cotterell, Michael Palfery, Brian Stehr, and Stephan Widmer. 2010 Pan Pacific Championships The 2010 Pan Pacific Championships, held in Irvine, California, also showcased Queensland’s sparkling talent pool, with our swimmers claiming five of Australia’s six gold medals and 10 of its 14 silver medals. Gold medal winners were Emily Seebohm, Melissa Gorman, Jessicah Schipper, and Sophie Edington. Queensland coaching members of the national team were Glenn Baker, Michael Bohl, Matt Brown, Denis Cotterell, Brian Stehr, and Stephan Widmer. 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships Queensland swimmers performed strongly at the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, winning six medals amongst them. Brenden Hall and Blake Cochrane returned home from the Netherlands as world champions. Other Queensland medal winners were Daniel Fox, Kayla Clarke, and Marayke Jonkers. Queensland coaches on the Australian team were Steve Hadler, Chris Phillips, and Drew McGregor. 2010 World Open Water Swimming Championships Melissa Gorman confirmed her status as one of the world’s premier open water swimmers by taking out the bronze medal in the 10 km event at the 2010 World Open Water Swimming Championships in Lac Saint-Jean, Canada. 2010 World Short Course Championships Queensland swimmers won four medals at the 2010 World Short Course Championships in Dubai: Kylie Palmer, silver and bronze; Leiston Pickett, bronze; and Brenton Rickard, bronze. 2010 Australian Short Course Championships Queensland topped the State point score at the 2010 Australian Short Course Championships, while Chandler was the leading club. Stand-out performers were Katie Goldman, Kylie Palmer, and Emily Seebohm. 2 2010 State Teams Short Course Championships Under the astute guidance of Head Coach, Matt Brown, the Queensland team won seven of the eight State Teams Short Course Championships trophies and every relay event. Exceptional performances were recorded by Remy Fairweather, Mikkayla Sheridan, Jordan Harrison, and Mitchell Larkin. 2011 Australian Open Championships Queensland swimmers reigned supreme at the 2011 Australian Open Championships, winning both the Corbett Shield for the women’s competition, and the Keiran Shield for the men’s. Based on performances at the Championships, 29 Queensland swimmers and nine Queensland coaches were named on the Australian team for the 2011 Shanghai FINA World Championships. Our contingent of swimmers once again made up more than half the national team. 2011 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships Queensland gold medallists at the 2011 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships, which catered for both open and age swimmers, were Melissa Gorman, Ky Hurst, Joshua Richardson, Stephanie Greene, Emily Seymour, Hugh Cumming, Bonnie MacDonald, Jordan Harrison, and Suzanne Ryan. Seven Queensland swimmers were selected on the eight-member Australian team for the 2011 World Championships. Champion club was St Peters Western. 2011 Australian Age Championships Mikkayla Sheridan, with eight gold medals, propelled Queensland to its 12th consecutive victory at the 2011 Australian Age Championships. Other multiple winners included Tessa Wallace and Cameron McEvoy, both of whom won four titles, and Taylor Green and Jordan Harrison, with three gold medals each. Seventeen Queensland coaches produced one or more winners at the Championships. 2010 Queensland Championships Over the seven days of competition at the 2010 Queensland Championships, 1,575 swimmers competed in individual events, and 1,668 in the relays. Major award winners at the Championships were Emily Seebohm (Swimmer of the Meet), Madeline Groves (Age Group Swimmer of the Meet), Regan Leong (Country Swimmer of the Meet), and Brenden Hall (SWD Swimmer of the Meet). The President’s Trophy, for leading club, was won once again by St Peter’s Western. Athlete and Coach Development A team of 17 Gold and Silver Squad swimmers and seven coaches attended a training camp in Beijing before participating in the 2010 Chinese National Youth Championships. Another 15 swimmers, also members of the Gold and Silver Squads, supported by three coaches, competed at the 2010 New Zealand Short Course Championships in Wellington. Other development activities included the annual trip to the Great Barrier Reef swim meet in Mackay for Bronze Squad members, sports medicine (sport psychology, physiotherapy and nutrition) consultations at several centres for members of the Bronze and Junior Development Squads, and a camp at the Gold coast for the Silver, Youth Flippers and Junior Flippers Squads. 3 The newly created Junior Platinum Squad, for 12 year-old girls and 13 year-old boys, visited the Queensland Academy of Sport, where squad members were filmed with underwater cameras before having lunch with several current and former champion swimmers. They also spent a weekend at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. Financial assistance to access strong competition was provided to regional members of various Swimming Queensland development squads. Coach education and accreditation courses, including SWD and OWS, were delivered at several locations. Coach mentoring activities included visits by Swimming Queensland’s Mentor Coach, Scott Volkers, to all regions and a number of workshops at the Queensland Academy of Sport.
