Due to its recent emergence and disparity from the Western art market, it remains an indispensable yet unfamiliar subject for the art world. This study penetrates through the thriving scene of the Chinese art market, fills part of the gap by presenting an in-depth analysis of its market structure, and depicts the route of development during 2006-2011, the booming period of the Chinese art market. As one of the most important and largest emerging art markets, what are the key trends in the Chinese art market from 2006 to 2011? This question serves as the main research question that guides throughout the research. To answer this question, research at three levels is unfolded, with regards to the functioning of the Chinese art market, the geographical shift from west to east, and the market performance of contemporary Chinese art. As the most vibrant art category, Contemporary Chinese art is chosen as the focal art sector in the empirical part since its transaction cover both the Western and Eastern art market and it really took off at secondary art market since 2005, in line with the booming period of the Chinese art market. -

Der Saal war bis auf den letzten Sitzplatz gefüllt und die Zuhörer erlebten eine mitreissende Diskussion zwischen Herrn Sigg und der SCAA- Präsidentin Mulan Sun. Anhand von Kunstwerken der letzten vier Dekaden entspann sich nicht nur ein Gespräch über die Geschichte der chinesischen Gegenwartskunst, sondern auch über die Geschichte von Uli Sigg, von China und der Sch- weiz. Aber ich kannte die westliche Gegenwartskunst. Diese hat den Vorzug, dass sie Fleisch und Blut hat – sie lebt. Das war für mich wesentlich für die westliche Kunst und so hielt ich es zunächst auch mit der chinesischen Gegenwartskunst. Die traditionelle Kunst ist ein ganzes Universum, in das man sich schwer hineinden- ken kann. Ich habe es dann später versucht – mit Gewinn für mich persönlich –, aber das ist eine ganz andere Anstren- Mulan Sun: Als ich vor 10 Jahren einmal im Kunsthaus Zürich gung. Also: Die Gegenwartskunst mangels Kenntnissen in ein Buch “China Art Book” ( 中国当代艺术)entdeckte, war der chinesischen Tradition – zu Beginn. es ein verwirrendes Gefühl für mich. Das Hauptthema der chinesischen Kunst waren für mich Kalligrafie, Tuschmalerei oder Stempelkunst. Bei der chinesischen traditionellen Kunst stehen die Schönheit und Harmonie immer im Vordergrund. -

Shanghai, China) Figurative painting relies on many tools both mechanical and psychological. Traditionally, figure paintings would serve those in power, presupposing an idealized man or woman. More recently, often relying on the manipulation of photographic images to achieve painterly postures imbued with apparent moral authority and a false sense of authenticity. Slowly, more individualistic pursuits ensued, where a successful figure painter could use the subject’s surface features as a stepping off point to a deeper understanding of both the inner life of the subject, as well as the inner life of the artist portraying the portrait-subject. This co-dependent relationship between portrait-subject and artist is an uneasy one. Each observing the other, to see how each is perceived. A bond inevitably develops between artist and portrait sitting subject. In the best of the new psychological portraits, the figure as it is portrayed, holds the keys to unlocking the inner self. Not only the subject’s self but also the artist’s and even the viewer’s selves. And what of posthumous portraits or famous figures of the artist’s imaginative pursuit, where the connection between artist and subject is less apparent? Often times, there remains an obsessive need to record in portraiture those already gone, whether an obsession with famous figures or private, personal friends lost to death. -

Deposit Guide Contact: email Searching for Yield in Real Assets Tara Michelle Velez PhD Thesis Birkbeck, University of London 22nd June 2017 1 Abstract Three empirical chapters addressing investments in real, alternative assets are presented in this thesis. Chapter 2 focuses on fine art as an investment. In recent years, the art market has been characterized by final auction prices greatly exceeding the ex- ante estimates published by international auction houses. We define this difference as a rarity premium and build a ‘Rarity Index’ by aggregating the premia relative to the mean. We also investigate the benefits, outside financial performance, associated with art ownership and introduce the term of ‘ownership yield’, meant to encapsulate both aesthetic yield and features of conspicuous consumption. This ownership yield may account for the large differences between the values of rarity indexes we construct for three famous families of paintings over the period 2003 to 2013. In Chapter 3, we turn our attention to residential real estate in alpha cities. We argue that relative price changes in prime property markets have greatly deviated from non-prime markets on a national level, while similarities across prime markets in different countries have increased. -
