Spradbery Author: Walter Spradbery With a commentary by John Spradbery ISBN: 9780956593504 Price: £25.00 Format: Hardback Pages: 282 Illustrations: 25 col, 65 b/w ills Size: 300 x 200 mm Category: Biography/ Art Rights: - Walter E.Spradbery is best known for the classic posters he produced for London Transport, British Rail and LNER in the interwars years. He worked in watercolour and linocut, specialising in landscapes featuring the countryside around London. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. Walter Spradbery was also an official war artist. A pacifist, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War. In this book, the life of Walter Spradbery is revealed mainly through a remarkable correspondence discovered some 35 years after his death: part of a huge quantity of penned correspondence, reputed to have amounted to over one thousand letters, to a lifelong friend, James Berry. The book also features diaries from pre- World War One and later correspondence to a certain Miss Elinor Pugh. All these sources have been assembled by his son John Spradbery who also comments on the material. These are the words of Jim Supangkat, an authoritative Indonesian critic and curator, in the introduction to this book which investigates the contemporary art scene in his country through the work of ten key artists. Similar to the artistic production of other Asian scenes – China and India especially – Indonesia celebrates chaos as, precisely, a globalised symptom that is not necessarily lacking in expressive possibilities. In fact Supangkat continues: “When chaos reaches its critical point the process of decadence and the conditions of disorder are concluded and a new substance takes shape, with a level of order that is wholly different from what existed previously…”. damiani OCT 2010 NEW TITLE NEW Title: He Sen Paintings Author: He Sen ISBN: 9788862081375 Price: £29.99 Format: Hardback Pages: 96 Illustrations: 70 col ills Size: 280 x 240 mm Category: Art Rights: UK & Eire, Greece, E.Europe, Middle East & Far East only. “The Chinese painter He Sen was born in the Yunnan province in 1968, at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution.... he began his artistic training in 1989, the year the democratic movement in China was put down. He Sen’s career has therefore been....permeated by transformations which have shaped Chinese society until the present.. Since 1998 the painter has been (almost) exclusively interested in the portrayal of girls and women, pictures which are distinguished by their exact finishing as much as their detailed depiction....[His] paintings show anonymous young women alone with no further description, always placed against an undifferentiated and monochrome background. A few props such as an armchair, table, sofa or bed as well as accessories such as a single bottle of whiskey, a glass, a packet of cigarettes, a mobile telephone serve to locate his models within a space which at most only hints at a room, embellished only by vague shadows or occasionally visible cigarette smoke” (Dirk Steimann). 2 JOHN RULE AUTUMN 2010 damiani AUG 2010 NEW TITLE NEW Title: Barry McGee Author: Barry Mcgee ISBN: 9788862080965 Price: £29.99 Format: Hardback Pages: 176 Illustrations: 120 col ills Size: 315 x 240 mm Category: Art Rights: UK & Eire, Greece, E.Europe, Middle East & Far East only. After Chris Johanson, Ed Templeton and Mike Mills, here is fresh mongraph on another of the Beautiful Losers, Barry McGee, an artist who started out in the 80’s on the streets of San Francisco, signing his works with the tag name TWIST. Welcomed on the international scene as the new Keith Haring and soon becoming a cult figure in street art and graffiti, McGee today is known not only for his technical abilities as a tagger but also because he transformed the practice of street art into a new language bringing together the most disparate energies and materials. In fact his indoor works may include drawings on paper and coloured geometrical patterns, junk and old computer monitors, car parts and sheet metal; surfaces on which the artist intervenes with markers, spray paints, pesticide sprayers and his characteristic series of caricatured faces of people suffering and alienated by urban survival. AUG 2010 NEW TITLE NEW Title: Soroyama: Masterworks Author: Hajime Soroyama ISBN: 9783037665992 Price: £28.00 Format: Flexibound Pages: 448 Illustrations: 1000 col ills Size: 235 x 180 mm Lang: Eng/ Japanese Category: Art/ Erotica Rights: UK & Eire,Scandinavia, E Europe, Africa, Israel, Latin America only. Hajime Sorayama was born in 1947 in Japan. After studying at Tokyo’s Chuo Art School he became a freelance illustrator. In 1978 he drew his first robot. Sexy Robot, published by Genko-sha in 1983, made his organic robotic forms famous around the world. Derived in part from pin-up art his chromeplated gynoids appear in suggestive poses, often in latex and leather. This thick tome is a reference catalogue to Sorayama’s rich work including a lot of new illustrations. Masterworks sparkles with extraordinary talent, wondrous imagination and impeccable skill. “Sorayama’s surreal and futuristic Dadaist images not only produce incredible sensations in the observer, but also blend into a unique homage to life. With joyful freedom he combines and morphs fear with happiness, pain with pleasure, repulsion with attraction, past with future, flesh with metal, the organic with ethereal.” – Thierry Mugler JOHN RULE AUTUMN 2010 3 Silvana JULY 2010 NEW TITLE NEW Title: Geographics Subtitle: A Map of Art Practices in Africa, Past & Present Author: David Adjaye ISBN: 9788836616589 Price: £35.00 Format: Paperback Pages: 384 Illustrations: 250 col ills Size: 285 x 240 mm Category: Art Rights: UK & Eire and Scandinavia only.
