ABOUT THE ARTIST JAN HENDRIX

Jan Hendrix was born in Maasbree, Holland, on the 28th of July, 1949. He studied at the Ateliers 63, Haarlem, and the Jan van Eyck Akademie in , Holland. Between 1971 and 1976, he lived in France, Portugal, Norway, and Ireland. He has lived and worked in since 1978.

Hendrix has been exhibiting individually since 1975. Recent exhibitions of note include: Malpaís, Fundación César Manrique, Lanzarote Spain (2008); Storyboard, Museo Amparo, , Mexico; Jan Hendrix, Galería Ramis Barquet, Monterrey, Mexico (2007); Storyboard, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico; Beneath the Surface, Anne Reed Gallery, Ketchum, Idaho, USA. Signos de Origen, Centro de Diseño, Cine y Televisión, Mexico City (2006); After Nature, Galería Rafael Ortiz, Sevilla, Spain; Exhibition of the first Spanish edition of the book After Nature by W.G. Hendrix has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in Mexico, Holland, France, England, Germany, Spain, Ireland, the United States, Indonesia, China, Australia, Turkey and Kenya. Among the most recent are: Advent, 100 Objects of Design, Seoul National University Museum, Korea; The London Original Print Fair, Royal Academy of Arts, Burlington Gardens, London, England; EXPO AICHI 2005, Toyota, Japan; The Myth of Two Volcanoes: Popocatépetl e Iztaccihuatl, Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City (2005); Mexican Report: Contemporary Art from Mexico, Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, San Antonio, Texas, USA (2004).

Hendrix has also collaborated in important projects with architects. It is through these interventions that he began to work in large formats.

Hendrix’s projects also include collaborations with leading book authors, among them Seamus Heaney, W. G. Sebald, Gabriel García Márquez, Paolo Ruffilli, Bert Schierbeek and Homero Aridjis. These works form part of privileged collections such as the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, the National Council for Culture and the Arts, the Finance Secretariat and the Foreign Relations Secretariat, in Mexico, and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague, Holland; as well as to museums including the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, France; Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, Holland; Fundación Cultural , Mexico; the Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca, Mexico; Koninklijke Bibliotheek, The Hague, Holland; Fundación Rodríguez Acosta, Granada, Spain; Van Bommel Van Dam Museum, Venlo, Holland; Rijksmuseum Twente, Enschede, Holland; Stedelijk Museum, , Holland; Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam, Holland; Museo Universitario de Ciencias y Arte, National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico City; the Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland; and the Jaques y Natasha Gellman Collection, Mexico City.
