Drayton A thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English at the University of St Andrews May 2011 i ‘Paper Gypsies’: Representations of the Gypsy Figure in British Literature, c.1780- 1870 Representations of the Gypsies and their lifestyle were widespread in British culture in the late- eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This thesis analyzes the varying literary and artistic responses to the Gypsy figure in the period circa 1780-1870. Addressing not only well-known works by William Wordsworth, Jane Austen, Walter Scott, John Clare, Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold and George Eliot, but also lesser-known or neglected works by Gilbert White, Hannah More, George Crabbe and Samuel Rogers, unpublished archival material from Princess Victoria’s journals, and a range of articles from the periodical press, this thesis examines how the figure of the Gypsy was used to explore differing conceptions of the landscape, identity and freedom, as well as the authoritative discourses of law, religion and science. The influence of William Cowper’s Gypsy episode in Book One of The Task is shown to be profound, and its effect on ensuing literary representations of the Gypsy is an example of my interpretation of Wim Willem’s term ‘paper Gypsies’: the idea that literary Gypsies are often textual (re)constructions of other writers’ work, creating a shared literary, cultural and artistic heritage. A focus on the picturesque and the Gypsies’ role within that genre is a strong theme throughout this thesis. The ambiguity of picturesque Gypsy representations challenges the authority of the leisured viewer, provoking complex responses that either seek to contain the Gypsy’s disruptive potential or demonstrate the figure’s refusal to be controlled. An examination of texts alongside contemporary paintings and sketches of Gypsies by Princess Victoria, George Morland, Thomas Gainsborough, J. M. W.     HStud 27 (2013)2, 291–311 DOI: 10.1556/HStud.27.2013.2.7 TURKS, HUNGARIANS, AND GYPSIES ON STAGE: EXOTICISM AND AUTO-EXOTICISM IN OPERA AND OPERETTA LYNN HOOKER Indiana University, IN, USA E-mail: [email protected] The tradition of European “classical music” has long evoked the exotic, and two of the most prominent exotic referents in that tradition are the Middle East, first and foremost the Turk, and the Hungarian Gypsy, raising the questions of how these “exotic” traditions are related, and what their comparison might tell us about the idea of musical exoticism more broadly. In this essay, I briefly survey the “Turkish style” and its use in Classical-period opera; discuss its replacement by Hungar- ian-Gypsy style in the nineteenth century; and finally examine the interesting juxta- position of Turkish and Hungarian-Gypsy topics in two fin-de-siècle Central Euro- pean operettas, Der Zigeunerbaron by the Austrian Johann Strauss Jr. and Gül baba by the Hungarian Jenõ Huszka. An examination of these works and their reception reveals fissures between the Viennese and Budapest versions of operettas featuring “exotic” topics and characters, and between the operetta industries in the two cities. These details offer a fascinating look at the dividing line between exoticism and auto-exoticism and at the significance of references to Turkish and Hungar- ian-Gypsy topics in the Central European cultural climate of this period – in short, a reconsideration of what it means to be Hungarian, and for whom. Films, music, and literary works had a huge potential for the construction of collective perception. How were Roma characters depicted in “documentary-artistic” novels, “adventure” stories, and popular films? Analyzing the sociocultural context in which the images of Roma were embedded, the concluding part of this article demonstrates that the depiction of Roma victims as a nomadic community dovetailed with the ideas inherent in Soviet culture about nomadism as a phenomenon bordering on antisocial behavior and crime. Thus, Roma victims were perceived for the most part as people who had been persecuted justifiably and deservedly. Тhis led to the belief that they were not worthy of sympathy and deserving commemoration. Creative work The aggregate of “sites of memory” about the past war, which were created by the Soviet regime starting in the 1960s, also includes the sphere of artistic reflection. Bookstores and library book collections began to fill up with numerous published accounts, stories, and novels about the “Great Patriotic War.” However, the term “reflection” is used provisionally here: The issue was rather about creating a new narrative language with a developed system of ideological accents, symbols, and markers. For a deeper understanding of the image of the recent past, the term “representation” is more appropriate.

Pushkin: The Invention of Russian Literature Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) was an acknowledged genius , the No. 1 writer during his lifetime, not because he wrote best-sellers (although he did), but because his work, and his personality and life, exemplified qualities that brought him recognition and fame . Pushkin traced his lineage to noble families and was the great grandson of Peter the Great’s Abyssinian general, Abram Petrovich Gannibal, born an African prince . Pushkin was the Russian Byron , the Russian Mozart of poetry. After graduating from the elite Lycée, at age 21, the publication of his first major poem, Ruslan and Ludmila (1820), created a sensation , especially when he was exiled to the south at the same time for circulating poems about freedom . In 1826, back in St. Petersburg, where the Emperor Nicholas I was his personal censor, Pushkin became a professional man of letters and established a literary journal. His greatest work, the novel in verse Eugene Onegin (1833), was acclaimed as “an encyclopedia of Russian life ” and was made into a beloved opera by Petr Tchaikovsky in 1878. Students copied his bawdy poetry in their albums. His reputation with women made mothers fear for their daughters. His marriage to the beautiful Natalia Goncharova led to a duel over her honor, in which he was killed . Since then, his stature in Russian literature has only increased and he is Russia’s national poet , a literary saint with statues throughout Russia and streets named after him in every town.

I must, I fear, claim the indulgence due to one who attempts, for the first time, a critical edition of a text so perplexingly voluminous in variants as Tennyson's. I can only say that I have spared neither time nor labour to be accurate and exhaustive. I have myself collated, or have had collated for me, every edition recorded in the British Museum Catalogue, and where that has been deficient I have had recourse to other public libraries, and to the libraries of private friends.

    Alexander Sergevich Pushkin (1799-1837) BLACK EUROPEANS: A British Library Online Gallery feature by guest curator Mike Phillips Abram was the son of an African ruler; possibly from Chad, possibly from what is now Eritrea. At the age of eight he was either abducted or sent to the court of the Turkish Sultan in Constantinople. He might have stayed there had it not been for the desire of the Russian Emperor, Peter the Great, to emulate Western fashions. Peter was a great moderniser. For example, he banned his nobles from wearing beards in the old Russian style. He had seen black pages at the court of Louis XIV of France and in aristocratic circles in England, so it was only a matter of time before he acquired one. One more generous contemporary view was that, as part of his modernising project, Peter used Abram’s education and career to demonstrate that anyone, “even from among wild men, such as Negroes” could be trained to give valuable service to sovereign and state. Bought from the Sultan, Abram arrived in Russia and was baptised with Tsar Peter standing as his godfather. Peter visited France in 1717, and at the same time Abram was sent to study there, as one of Peter’s emergent and foreign educated officer class. He returned with the conventional skills of an officer of artillery, but he had also acquired a new name, Hannibal. The name had echoes of republican defiance which, later on, were significant to Pushkin. A respected military engineer, he was promoted under successive rulers and lived on into the reign of Catherine the Great, dying only 18 years before A.S.

While under the strict surveillance of the Tsar's political police and unable to publish, Pushkin wrote his most famous play, the drama Boris Godunov. His novel in verse, Eugene Onegin, was serialized between 1825 and 1832. Notoriously touchy about his honour, Pushkin fought a total of twenty-nine duels. At the age of thirty-seven years, however, Alexander Pushkin was fatally wounded in such an encounter with Georges-Charles de Heeckeren d'Anthès.

Petr Ilich Chaikovskii (1889)2 A Disputed Claim In the summer of 2006 a book review in the Times Literary Supplement contained the following passing remark hidden away between brackets: ‘(The free-loving Zemfira and her death at Aleko’s jealous hands provided a direct source for Prosper Mérimée’s and Georges Bizet’s Carmen)’.3 The reference is, of course, to the two main characters in Pushkin’s narrative poem The Gypsies, which he wrote in 1824, and published in 1827. Although the claim is demonstrably true, you still cannot expect to make it without inviting opposition. On this occasion the objection was not long delayed. A reader wrote in to say that this claim was a canard often trotted out by academics; it was untrue, and one reason was that Mérimée began to study Russian only in 1848, having already written his story Carmen in 1845. A short correspondence ensued, but the subject has now gone back to sleep. Nothing has been cleared up. If anything, the story has become rather more complicated. Referring to The Gypsies, the correspondent informs us that ‘To see it as a direct source for his Spanish tale has tempted many critics.’4 This is to suggest that only one thing matters: the line of provenance goes from the Pushkin poem straight to the French-Spanish tale and thence to the opera libretto - which is by no means what has been claimed.
