Brooklyn, NY/ March 9, 2015—BAM, Red Hot, and Red Bull Music Academy join forces to present Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell!, an all-star tribute to the inimitable late musician. On May 29 & 30, an array of unique performers come together at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House to celebrate the genre-defying experimental spirit of Russell, whose oeuvre ranged from classical to disco to experimental to folk.

Artists paying homage to Russell at BAM include Sam Amidon, Cults, Lonnie Holley, Redding Hunter, Dev Hynes, Little Scream, Thao Nguyen (Thao & the Get Down Stay Down), Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters), and Rubblebucket. Several of these artists contributed to the 2014 Red Hot/Yep Roc two-CD Master Mix release, hailed by Pitchfork as “a hell of a tribute album.”

About Arthur Russell Arthur Russell was an American cellist, composer, singer and musician whose work spanned the genres of classical, disco, experimental, folk, and rock. Notable artists who collaborated with Russell include Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass, Talking Heads, Jennifer Warnes, Bootsy Collins, and Nicky Siano. Russell found commercial success in New York's underground dance and disco scene throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. Although he recorded many songs, he only released one full-length album during his lifetime, World of Echo (Rough Trade Records) in 1986.

Russell died from AIDS-related complications in 1992. Since 2000, a series of reissues, compilations, books, and a biographical documentary have significantly raised his profile. Following his death, several albums of his unreleased recordings were compiled and released, including Another Thought (1994), Calling Out of Context (2004), and Love is Overtaking Me (2008). Master Mix: Red Hot + Arthur Russell, released in 2014 by Yep Roc Records, features 26 of Russell’s songs performed by more than 20 artists including Sufjan Stevens, José González, Robyn, Dev Hynes, and Richard Reed Parry.
