Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle “Grigore Antipa” 62(1): 137–159. https://doi.org/10.3897/travaux.62.e38595 Abstract A comprehensive list of the taxons dedicated to Grigore Antipa by collaborators, science personalities who appreciated his work was constituted from surveying the natural history or science museums or university collections from several countries (Romania, Germany, Australia, Israel and United States). The list consists of 33 taxons, with current nomenclature and position in a collection. Historical as- pects have been discussed, in order to provide a depth to the process of collection dissapearance dur- ing more than one century of Romanian zoological research. Natural calamities, wars and the evictions of the museum’s buildings that followed, and sometimes the neglection of the collections following the decease of their founder, are the major problems that contributed gradually to the transformation of the taxon/specimen into a historical landmark and not as an accessible object of further taxonomical inquiry. The main habitat studied was a shingle bank the structure and environmental conditions of which are described. A description of the eggs and young stages of S Lrigamia is given and it is shown how five post larval instaro may be distinguished by using head width, average number of coxnl glands and structure of the receptaculum seminis in females, and head width and the chaetotaxy of the genital sternite in males. An account of the structure of the reproductive organs and the development of the gametes, and of the succession, moulting, growth rates and length of life and fecundity of the post larval instars is given, and the occurrence of a type of neoteny in the epeciee is discussed. -

Accepted: 03.12.2018 The present work lists the genus Pachymerium C.L. Koch, 1847 and species P. ferrugineum (C.L. Koch, 1835), as well as the family Geophilidae and the order Geophilomorpha, to which they belong, as new to the fauna of the Khovd Aimag in Mongolia. This species is also new to Kyrgyzstan and to the East Kazakhstan and Almaty Regions of Kazakhstan. Distribution map is provided. Key words: centipedes, Geophilidae, Pachymerium, faunistics, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Kazakhstan. Pachymerium ferrugineum (C.L. Koch, 1835) is a Trans-Palaearctic polyzonal species (Europe, N Africa, Russia, western and Central Asia, China) (Sergeeva, 2013; Bukhkalo et al., 2014; Nefediev et al., 2017), also known as anthropochore introductions: North and South America, Japan and Hawaii isl. (Simiakis et al., 2013; Volkova, 2016). In Central Asia, it is known from Uzbekistan (Kessler, 1874), Tajikistan (Verhoeff, 1930), Kazakhstan (Vsevolodova-Perel, 2009) and Mongolia (Ulykpan, 1988) while the considerable part of this large region has never been investigated. Basing on new material from Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, I provide new data on the distribution of P. ferrugineum in Central Asia. Materials and methods Material was collected in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia in 2015–2018. Specimens were taken by hand and preserved in 70% ethanol. -

It was in 1934, after the completion of the Italian conquest of Cyrenaica and Tripolitania, that the two provinces were united under Italian over-rule as the colony of Libia. The independent State that was established in 1951 kept that name as the one associated with the region from ancient times. The political divisions of the former provinces of Cyrenaica, Tripolitania, and Fezzan corresponded with the country's natural physical barriers and differences. Geography had made the ancient affiliations of the two coastal regions dissimilar - Cyrenaica's early history was influenced by Greece and Egypt, whereas Tripolitania fell under Rome and was close to Tunisia. The Arab invasions had unifying effects on the population, as did the Turkish occupation in the sixteenth century. But the three provinces were never closely unified,and successive foreign powers, whether they controlled all of modern Libya or only parts of it, generally continued to follow the natural divisions of the country in the shape of their administrations. -

The study sites were located in two regions differing in the shape of the valley, the presence of thermophilous habitats and the size of riparian forests. Pitfall traps were used as a sampling method. As a result, 444 specimens belonging to 12 centipede species of two orders – Geophilomor- pha (four species) and Lithobiomorpha (eight species) were caught. -

FORTIFICATIONS IN AFRICA: A BIBLIOGRAPHIC ESSAY Alexander Sarantis General Discussion In contrast with other regions of the West and (in the case of Cyrenaica) the East, the publications on the fortifications of Africa have merited their own paper. This is down to the fact that it is not as easy to summarise the major works on fortifications in all of the North African provinces, from Cyrenaica to Mauretania Tingitana, for the 3rd to 6th c., as it is in the case of other areas. Work on each of the major African provinces, and on the periods before and after the Vandal era, tend to be treated separately in the literature.1 Although, as will be seen in this paper, limited major exca- vation work has taken place on military sites in these regions, a substantial body of literature exists for each of the major areas, mostly based on field survey and textual evidence. Because this paper deals chronologically with developments across the period, referring in the same sections to refer- ences from various regions, its text will appear at the outset, and biblio- graphic entries organised by region will follow. Mattingly and Hitchner (1995) 174–76 and 211–13 is a good introduc- tion to research on fortifications and the army in Roman and late antique North Africa. Le Bohec (1991) offers a more detailed review of work since 1979, and Krimi (2004) and Bel Faïda (2004) survey recent literature on Roman Tripolitania and North African frontier studies, respectively. Welsby (1990) contains useful references to work on Early and Late Roman military architecture. -

A commented list of 42 centipede species from order Geophilomorpha present in Romania, is given. This comes to complete the annotated catalogue compiled by Negrea (2006) for the other orders of the class Chilopoda: Scutigeromorpha, Lithobiomorpha and Scolopendromorpha. Since 1972, when Matic published the first monograph on epimorphic centipeds from Romania in the series “Fauna României” as the results of his collaboration with his student Cornelia Dărăbanţu, the taxonomical status of many species has been debated and sometimes clarified. Some of the accepted modifications were included by Ilie (2007) in a checklist of centipedes, lacking comments on synonymies. The main goal of this work is, therefore, to update the list of known geophilomorph species from taxonomic and systematic point of view, and to include also records of new species. INTRODUCTION Among centipedes, the Geophilomorpha order is the richest in species number, with 40% of all known species, distributed all over the world (with some exceptions, Antartica and Artic regions) (Bonato et al., 2011a). From the approx. 1250 geophilomorph species, a number of 179 valid species in 37 genera were recently acknowledged to be present in Europe, following a much needed critical review of taxonomic literature (Bonato & Minelli, 2014). -

An up to date review of the knowledge of the centipede fauna of Yugoslavia is presented. 1 species of Scutigeromor- pha, 86 species of Lithobiomorpha, 62 species of Geophilomorpha and 10 species of Scolopendromorpha are listed. Subspecies are not listed because of their uncertain status. Taxonomìc problems arise from inaccurate de- scriptions: older descriptions are of questionable validity, while others are made on the basis of a small number of specimens so that there are insufficient data on variability. The age and the taxonomic characters of the post-larval stadia are likewise unknown. Some taxa illustrate the processes of speciation and there are many endemic species.
