Middle Ages 500-1000 1 3 The Dark Age Church Period of Barbarian Invasions AD 500—1000 Introduction With the endorsement of the Emperor and obligatory church membership for all Roman citizens across the empire, Roman Christianity continued to change the nature of the Church, in stead of visa versa. The humble beginnings were soon forgotten in the luxurious halls and civil power of the highest courts and assemblies of the known world. Who needs spiritual power when you can have civil power? The transition from being the persecuted to the persecutor, from the powerless to the powerful with Imperial and divine authority brought with it the inevitable seeds of corruption. Some say that Christianity won the known world in the first five centuries, but a closer look may reveal that the world had won Christianity as well, and that, in much less time. The year 476 usually marks the end of the Christian Roman Empire in the West. -

Gruen, Chair This dissertation argues that Cicero’s de Republica is both a reflection of, and a commentary on, the era in which it was written to a degree not previously recognized in Ciceronian scholarship. Contra readings which treat the work primarily as a theoretical tract in the tradition of late Hellenistic philosophy, this study situates the work within its historical context in Late Republican Rome, and in particular within the personal experience of its author during this tumultuous period. This approach yields new insights into both the meaning and significance of the work and the outlook of the individual who is our single most important witness to the history of the last decades of the Roman Republic. Specifically, the dissertation argues that Cicero provides clues preserved in the extant portions of the de Republica, overlooked by modern students in the past bur clearly recognizable to readers in his own day, indicating that it was meant to be read as a work with important contemporary political resonances. -

������������������������������ Half a Man's Worth": Popular Ideology about Slavery in Democratic Athens We see slavery as incompatible with democracy; the Athenians did not. What was their justification? Since slaves were not part of the polis, there is little coverage in our sources, but we can at least see what Athenians of the 5th and 4th centuries said about the institution of slavery and slaves. Homer's comment (via Odysseus' faithful slave Eumaeus) that "Zeus takes away half of a man's ����� (worth or excellence) once the day of slavery comes upon him" is the first explicit statement of the moral inferiority of a slave, though it is striking that the speaker is himself a slave who embodies ������ (nobleness, bravery). There was a universal acceptance of slavery as existing from the very beginning, but chattel slavery in Athens was relatively recent. As the rights of aristocrats spread in Athens to the middle and even lower classes, slaves increasingly filled the menial tasks, including public services, such as police, bookkeeping, cleaning the city. There were three or four private slaves per household, as domestics, farm laborers, or industrial laborers (used by the owner himself or rented out). A few rich men owned numerous slaves. Most rich men would have owned about fifty, but even the most modest household would have at least one. An Athenian without a slave (or the money to buy a slave - about the same price as a mule) argues in one text that he ought to get public assistance. Manumission was infrequent and slaves were treated much differently than free: a slave witness can give evidence only under torture since a slave cannot be trusted to tell the truth - especially against his master - except through torture. -

Iambic Metapoetics in Horace, Epodes 8 and 12 ERIKA ZIMMERMANN DAMER When in Book 1 of his Epistles Horace reflects back upon the beginning of his career in lyric poetry, he celebrates his adaptation of Archilochean iambos to the Latin language. He further states that while he followed the meter and spirit of Archilochus, his own iambi did not follow the matter and attacking words that drove the daughters of Lycambes to commit suicide (Epist. 1.19.23–5, 31).1 The paired erotic invectives, Epodes 8 and 12, however, thematize the poet’s sexual impotence and his disgust dur- ing encounters with a repulsive sexual partner. The tone of these Epodes is unmistakably that of harsh invective, and the virulent targeting of the mulieres’ revolting bodies is precisely in line with an Archilochean poetics that uses sexually-explicit, graphic obscenities as well as animal compari- sons for the sake of a poetic attack. -

A Glimpse Into the Roman Finances of the Second Punic War Through

A glimpse into the Roman finances The First Punic War (264 BC–241 BC), conducted by a network of alliances in Sicily, ended up with Rome prevailing over Carthage. At its zenith in the second century AD, the Roman Empire stretched from Hadrian’s Wall in Northern England to the Euphrates River in Syria, and from the Black Sea in the East to the Atlantic Ocean in the West. So tremendous in fact was the achievement of Rome in creating and sustaining this enormous empire that the very notion of Rome has left an indelible mark on all subsequent nations which are bearers of Western civilization. European rulers as far apart in time as Charlemagne, Napoleon, and Hitler have all consciously sought to position their respective dominions in relation to the Roman exemplar, and indeed the historical precedent for this positioning was first laid by the immediate successors to Rome's empire, the "barbarian" tribes who laid it waste, yet who nevertheless often called themselves Romans; after them, and for most of its subsequent history, Europe has seen some form of the Holy Roman Empire. It was not just in Europe, however, but also on the continents of Africa and Asia that Roman subjects swore their obedience to a single political system, acquiesced to the jurisprudence of a single law-code, and sought entrance into a single, distinct cultural community, despite their own often deep linguistic, religious, and regional diversity. -

By 323 B.C. Rhodes was independent again and Cyprus belonged to Egypt until Demetrius Poliocertes, aspirant to the throne of Macedon, took Cyprus again. Then in 307 he besieged Rhodes, using 30,000 men to build siege towers and engines, but all of this failed. (Ref. 38 (http://cnx.org/content/m17805/latest/#threeeight) , 222 (http://cnx.org/content/m17805/latest/#twotwotwo) ) GREECE Throughout the peninsula there was endless conflict between the slaves and the ruined proletarian masses who demanded that the state support them. Up until about 378 B.C. the police force of Athens consisted of about 300 state-owned Scythian slaves. At the beginning of the century Sparta, having won the Peloponnesian War with the help of subsidies from Persia, dominated southern Greece; then, by forming an "Arcadian League", Thebes took over control from about 370 to 360 B.C.; then Athens, with growing special- ization of professional soldiers and generals, professional orators and financial experts be- came supreme for awhile. But in the last part of the century the unity which the Greeks could not find among themselves was forced on them by Philip of Macedon. -
Backgrounds and Beginnings Early Republic: from Rome to Roman Italy
HIS 354 Ruzicka The Roman Republic MHRA 2123 10-11 MWF 334-5488 [email protected] For many people “Rome” conjures up images of a vast empire and a series of autocratic and often deranged emperors. That is only part of the story of Roman history. An equally long and equally fascinating phase—that of the Roman Republic—preceded the age of emperors. It was in fact during this phase of Roman history that Rome became a big city, that the Romans took control of the Mediterranean world, and that Julius Caesar (not an emperor) lived. This course surveys this “republican” period of Roman history from the origins of Rome to the assassination of Julius Caesar--a period of more than seven centuries. The three major themes of the course are: 1) the development of Rome’s distinctive political institutions and practices, 2) the rise of Rome to rule over the entire Mediterranean world and 3) the changes wrought upon Roman society by Roman success. We will first examine the origins of Rome, the evolution of the Roman constitution, and the acquisition of Roman dominion over Italy (the Early Republic). Then, we will follow the story of Rome's rise to world power (the Middle Republic). Finally, we will trace the crises of Republican institutions as a result of the internal pressures generated by Roman responsibility for the Mediterranean world (the Late Republic). In a nutshell, we will be examining the rise and fall of the Roman Republic—a 500-year long story. There will be three examinations, each counting 25% of the final grade, and 3 papers (topics at end of syllabus), counting altogether 25% of the final grade.
