Cesáreo Alierta, 8 VENTA ELECTRÓNICA [email protected] CARTA DEL DIRECTOR Queridos y respetados lectores, OMENZAMOS reseñan- do en este primer núme- ro de 2020 algunas noti- cias que consideramos de interés. En la reunión del pasado 29 de noviembre el Consejo de Ministros autorizó al Ministerio de Industria, Comercio y Turismo suscribir un convenio con Navantia para desarrollar las nuevas fragatas F-110, que llevará a la práctica la digitalización de esta empresa mediante el programa Astille- ro 4.0, situándola como líder en el exigente mercado global de fragatas. Este programa, esen- cial para la Armada, tiene un elevado contenido tecnológico e industrial que beneficia a dife- rentes proveedores españoles, estimándose una contribución anual a nuestro Producto Interior Bruto de 590 millones de euros y la creación de aproximadamente 7.000 empleos. De la reunión de los jefes de Estado y de Gobierno de la Alianza Atlántica, celebrada los días 3 y 4 del pasado diciembre en Londres, destaca la mención en la declaración final de las «oportunidades y desafíos» que representa el poder emergente de China, siendo la primera vez que aparece en una comunicación política de la OTAN. El principal resultado de la cita fue el reconocimiento de que es necesario reforzar la dimensión política de la Alianza, encargándose a un grupo de expertos iniciar una reflexión sobre este asunto. El pasado 10 de diciembre tuvo lugar a bordo del buque italiano Etna, atracado en Taren- to, la ceremonia de relevo del Mando Componente Marítimo de la NATO Response Force 2020 entre el vicealmirante italiano Paolo Pezzutti y el vicealmirante español Antonio Marto- rell Lacave, que asume esta responsabilidad desde el 1 de enero de 2020, permaneciendo embarcado junto a su Cuartel General a bordo del buque de asalto anfibio Castilla con un nivel de alistamiento de cinco días. Durante el discurso de S. M. el Rey, pronunciado en la celebración de la última Pascua Militar, Felipe VI destacó y agradeció el compromiso de las Fuerzas Armadas y la Guardia Civil señalando: «Sois hoy reflejo de una sociedad moderna, capaz y solidaria, que además sabe reconocer y agradecer siempre vuestro compromiso con el interés general de nuestra Nación. Un compromiso que demostráis con vuestra profesionalidad, sentido del deber y del honor; que acreditáis con vuestra lealtad y vuestra constante y generosa entrega al servicio del pueblo español. Un compromiso, en fin, con España y con nuestra Constitución». Por su parte, la ministra de Defensa Margarita Robles resaltó en su discurso el aconteci- miento histórico del V Centenario de la expedición de Magallanes y Elcano y afirmó que «los hombres y mujeres de nuestras Fuerzas Armadas son su principal baluarte». En relación a las necesidades de modernización, dijo que «continúa el esfuerzo de inversión en capacidades militares resultantes del planeamiento de la Defensa» y expresó el sentimiento de orgullo por España «que nos exige esfuerzo, generosidad, altura de miras y defensa del interés general. Una España que se ve reflejada en los valores que nuestra Constitución proclama». En otro orden de cosas, mediante resolución del almirante jefe de Estado Mayor de la Armada, se establece el día 3 de mayo como Jornada Histórica de la Armada, «sin restar 2020] 33 CARTA DEL DIRECTOR importancia ni solemnidad a la celebración del día de la Virgen del Carmen, Patrona de la Armada». Se trata de conmemorar que en la misma fecha de 1248 una armada castellana, al mando de Ramón Bonifaz, derrotó a las saetías y zabras musulmanas que custodiaban los accesos al Guadalquivir, logrando, tras remontar el río, deshacer un puente de barcas defendi- do mediante cadenas, incomunicando así Sevilla de Triana, lo que permitió a la postre la toma de la ciudad. Según la citada resolución, «esta gesta se considera como el primero de los hechos decisivos protagonizado por marinos españoles». En este número contamos con un total de once artículos. Tres son de tema general. El primero presenta el camino que transcurre desde el nacimiento de la Liga Marítima Española en 1900 hasta su refundación en 1969 para convertirse en la Liga Naval Española, añadiendo en 1993 el título de Real, repasando en detalle sus numerosos logros y valiosas iniciativas; el segundo nos habla del modelo de premios económicos establecido por la Marina estadouni- dense para compensar a sus dotaciones por el apresamiento o destrucción de buques enemigos que estuvo vigente desde el año 1799 hasta marzo de 1899, mientras que el tercero describe de forma somera la trayectoria de la Revista de Historia Naval, nacida en 1983, y el proceso actual de renovación en que se encuentra inmersa esta publicación. La sección Historias de la mar nos brinda en una nueva e interesante entrega la relación pormenorizada de los hechos que desembocaron en una gran tragedia marítima cuando el Queen Mary —que en 1942 era, junto a su gemelo el Queen Elisabeth, el barco más grande del mundo— se «llevó por delante» a su escolta, el crucero británico Curacoa, que acabó en el fondo del océano Atlántico con 338 miembros de su dotación. En relación a los temas profesionales figuran seis artículos: uno busca aumentar nuestra concienciación ante el riesgo que suponen los maremotos, fenómenos de baja probabilidad de ocurrencia pero que pueden causar grandes estragos; otro, tomando como referencia el Ejerci- cio BALTOPS-19, reflexiona sobre las operaciones anfibias en el actual escenario estratégico y la importancia de la capacidad de proyección del poder naval en ambiente expedicionario; un tercero, de carácter eminentemente técnico, detalla la utilización de paneles de control para el análisis y estudio de los sistemas dinámicos de los buques aplicando las técnicas de Busi- ness Intelligence a los datos disponibles en la Armada; el cuarto versa sobre el futuro de la Flotilla de Submarinos, recalcando la necesidad e importancia de la serie S-80; el quinto expli- ca el apoyo que ofrecen las inigualables capacidades de la Armada a las Fuerzas y Cuerpos de Seguridad del Estado en alta mar, narrando el hipotético caso de una unidad de la Flota activa- da para apoyar al Ministerio del Interior en una acción antidroga; mientras que el sexto, mediante el estudio de tres operaciones reales, concluye que «las capacidades, únicas, de una fuerza anfibia representan la opción militar más versátil para la evacuación de no combatientes en el entorno litoral, siempre que la situación permita el tiempo de desplazamiento de dicha fuerza».

After he left school, Walter would only have had about three choices of what to do with his life - to follow his father and work on the land, the hard grind of working in the tin mines, or going to sea. His elder brother by five years, Charles, had already entered the Royal Navy and was a Signalman 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. "Warrior". No doubt Walter worked with his father for a time, but with the example of his brother, and being of age to join the Navy as a Boy, he knew what he wanted to do. The local papers carried advertisements asking boys of 15 to 16 and a half years of age to volunteer for the Royal Navy and they should apply to the Commanding Officer of H.M.S. "Ganges", a boys training ship, then moored in St Just Pool at Mylor, a short distance from Falmouth.

How many students have come to the Library seeking the origin of their street or suburb name? We at the Townsville Library Service were not always able to find the answers and so the idea for Highways and Byways was born. Mr. John Mathew, local historian, retired Town Planner and long time Library supporter, was pressed into service to carry out the research. Since 1988 he has been steadily following leads, discarding red herrings and confirming how our streets got their names. Some remain a mystery and we would love to hear from anyone who has information to share. Where did your street get its name? Originally streets were named by the Council to honour a public figure. As the City grew, street names were and are proposed by developers, checked for duplication and approved by Department of Planning and Development Services. Many suburbs have a theme. For example the City and North Ward areas celebrate famous explorers. The streets of Hyde Park and part of Gulliver are named after London streets and English cities and counties.

Where the name of a ship appears in brackets it means that it is the ship served in. The name preceding it is that of the accounting base responsible for pay, etc. Some vessels, from the smallest up to destroyers, (which invariably operated in squadrons or flotillas, had insufficient working space on board, i.e. no victualing office, no stores office and only the tiniest ship's office on the larger frigates and destroyers, to look after the Captain's correspondence, daily orders for the ship etc., and didn't have sufficient sleeping and living accommodation to carry the victualling, stores and writer ratings necessary to fill the positions, i.e. these ships were designed purely as fighting machines - and the people who would organize the pay and service documents for the ship's company, victualing accounts and menus and all the various stores that a ship requires to operate, lived ashore in say Pembroke, where they could look after far more people than they could have done had they lived on board, i.e. there was a saving in manpower e.g. 1 Petty Officer Writer and 1 writer could look after the pay documents for 500 officers and ratings - which would be the pay for several ships - depending on the size of the ship's company.

The residents are most looking forward to being able to ‘FaceTime’ relatives who live too far away to visit, take photos in the garden, explore new hobbies and catch up on the news and weather should they fall asleep and miss the end! Also included are details of Postal Markings, Routes and Rates Campaigns include Taranaki, Waikato, Tauranga and the loss of HMS Orpheus THE NAVAL BRIGADE & WAIKATO FLOTILLA Manned by 245 officers and men from HMS Curacoa, Eclipse, Esk, Harrier & Miranda. Two steam-vessels were specially procured for use on the Waikato River, the Avon, which had previously been used in the Auckland Harbour and a specially built vessel in Sydney HMS Pioneer (originally to have been named Waikato). Burrows. France. Medaille de la Reconnaissance Francaise, silver grade (Medal of Gratitude), the reverse named to Miss Betty S. Burrows 1916-1919. Mounted loose for wear. With copy medal index card, Elizabeth S. Burrows, a Nurse with the French Red Cross entitled to a BWM/VM pair only. The Medal of Gratitude was given by the French authorities to civilians that came to aid of the wounded, disabled and refugees by volunteering. An interesting set of medals to a female recipient. (3) Nearly extremely fine £275-350 2. Member of the Order of the British Empire, King and Queen obverse, civilian, on ladies bow ribbon.
