India-Estonia Relations Political Relations India has long-standing historical links with Estonia. India recognised the Republic of Estonia on 9th September 1991 and Diplomatic Relations were established on 2nd December of the same year. Since then the bilateral relations continued to be cordial and friendly. The Embassy of India in Helsinki is concurrently accredited to Estonia and opened its outsourced visa centre in Tallinn in June 2012 which was inaugurated by the Foreign Minister of Estonia Mr. Urmas Paet Estonia opened its Embassy in New Delhi in March 2012. Mr. Viljar Lubi has been appointed as Ambassador. Bilateral visits The Estonian Minister for Education and Research, Mr. Jaak Aaviksoo visited India (New Delhi and Mumbai) from September 28- October 1, 2012. During the visit he met Minister for HRD and C&IT, Shri Kapil Sibal as well as MOS(C&IT), Shri Sachin Pilot. Foreign Minister Mr. Urmas Paet visited in February 2013 to inaugurate the Embassy of Estonia. During the visit he met with EAM and Minister of State for Corporate Affairs Shri Sachin Pilot. From India, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs Shri Sachin Pilot visited in April 2013. During the visit Shri Pilot met with Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications Mr. Juhan Parts, Minister of Justice Mr. Hanno Pevkur and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Urmas Paet. The Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and Prevention of Fiscal Evasion (DTAA) was signed on September 19, 2011. Foreign Office Consultations India-Estonia Foreign Office Consultations were held in Tallinn in May 2012. Commercial Relations Commercial relations between the two countries are good, but they could be more diverse and more significant. Considering the size of India and its rapidly developing economy, there is significant room for development. Good perspectives for co-operation can be found in information technology, and biotechnology, in which India is a world leader. India’s trade with Estonia remains modest. In 2012, trade with India is around 0.65% of Estonia's total trade. Imports from Estonia include copper, iron and steel, paper products and machinery. ITEC: Estonia is covered under ITEC Programme. The scholarships under the Programme have become very popular in Estonia. 20 slots have been offered for the Financial Year 2013-14. ITEC Day was celebrated on 24 October 2012. Cultural Relations There is a strong interest in Estonia for Indian culture. University of Tartu began teaching of Sanskrit in 1837. Several publications on Sanskrit language and literature were published. In recent years several noted Indian musicians and dancers have given performances in Estonia. Interest in Indian culture remains very strong. Indian Community The Indian community in Estonia is only about 200 and people are largely engaged in business and restaurants. ***** August 2013 .
