In addition, the data ofobservation for several species wimessed but not caught are also presented. In tota1, 347 butterfly species are listed with biological information (habitat etc.) when available. KEY WORDS Lepidoptera! inventory1 tropical rainforesti species diversity1 species richness! insect fauna Introduction The primary lowland forests in the Southeast Asian (SEA) tropics are characterized by the extremely species-rich biodiversity (Whitmore 1998). Arthropod assemblages comprise the main part of the biodiversity in tropical rainforests (Erwin 1982, Wilson 1992). Many inventory studies have been done focusing on various arthropod taxa to reveal the species-richness of arthropod assemblages in SEA tropical rainforests (e.g. Holloway & lntachat 2003). The butterfly is one of the most studied taxonomic groups in arthropods in the SEA region; the accumulated information on the taxonomy and geographic distribution were organized by Tsukada & Nishiyama (1980), Yata & Morishita (1981), Aoki et al. -

Iguanid lizards at Iguac;u Falls, Brazil appear to make butterflies a major component of their diets. They both stalk sitting individuals and leap into the air to capture ones in flight. Butterfly species seem to be attacked differentially. These observations support the widespread assumption that lizards can be involved as selec tive agents in the evolution of butterfly color patterns and behavior. Butterflies have been prominent in the development of ideas about protective and warning coloration and mimicry (e.g., Cott, 1940; J. Brower, 1958; M. Rothschild, 1972), and the dynamics of natural pop ulations (Ford & Ford, 1930; Ehrlich et aI., 1975). In spite of the crucial role that predation on adults must play in evolution of defen sive coloration and may play in population dynamics, there is re markably little information on predation on adult butterflies in nature. This lack is all the more striking, considering the large numbers of people who collect butterflies and the abundant indirect evidence from bird beak and lizard jaw marks on butterfly wings (e.g., Carpen ter, 1937; Shapiro, 1974) that adult butterflies are quite frequently attacked. Published field observations of predation on butterflies deal almost exclusively with the attacks of birds and consist largely of accounts of individual attacks (Fryer, 1913). Observations of natural predation by lizards are very rare, although "birds and lizards have long been considered to be the major selective agents responsible for the ex treme diversity of unpalatable and mimetic forms of butterflies in nature" (Boyden, 1976). -

The paper used butterflies of the family Papilionidae as a model system for testing evolutionary hypotheses, and included a revision of the Papilionidae of the region, as well as the description of some 20 new species. Wallace argued that the Papilionidae were the most advanced butterflies, against some of his colleagues such as Bates and Trimen who had claimed that the Nymphalidae were more advanced because of their possession of vestigial forelegs. In a very important section, Wallace laid out what is perhaps the clearest Darwinist definition of the differences between species, geographic subspecies, and local ‘varieties.’ He also discussed the relationship of these taxonomic categories to what is now termed ‘reproductive isolation.’ While accepting reproductive isolation as a cause of species, he rejected it as a definition. Instead, species were recognized as forms that overlap spatially and lack intermediates. However, this morphological distinctness argument breaks down for discrete polymorphisms, and Wallace clearly emphasised the conspecificity of non-mimetic males and female Batesian mimetic morphs in Papilio polytes, and also in P. -

From May 19th to June 8th of 2007, the authors undertook lepidopterological research in 29 localities in Romania, several of which are poorly or totally unstudied from a lepidopterological point of view. 105 taxa were identifi ed, out of which seven receive special attention in the text, with comments on their distribution, ecology and conservation status. Polyommatus amandus (Schneider, 1792) (Lycaenidae) is recorded for the fi rst time in Romania after 28 years. We provide the fi rst record from Muntenia for Cupido (Everes) decolorata (Staudinger, 1886) (Lycaenidae), and the third known Romanian location for Pseudophilotes bavius egea (Herrich-Schäffer, 1852) (Lycaenidae). Lepidoptera DNA-based identifi cation was used for species identifi cation based on larval stages. This technique confi rmed the discovery of Zerynthia polyxena ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) (Papilionidae) in south- ern Dobrogea and its rediscovery in the entire province after 80 years. Introduction Although the Romanian butterfl y fauna has been studied for more than 150 years (e.g. Fuss 1850; Franzenau 1852, 1856, 1859; Mann 1866), there are still large gaps regard- ing the distribution and conservation status of many of the species known to occur within the country’s territory. -

One of the most important folivorous insect pest on these crops is the banana skipper; Erionota thrax. The larvae of these large butterflies can cause mean leaf defoliation of about 60, leading to yield losses of about 20. Indigenous to Southeast Asia, life stages of the pest are attacked by several parasitoids of which Ooencyrtus erionotae, Cotesia erionotae and Brachymeria spp. are the major ones. Infestation and parasitism of the pest varies with plant growth stages, leaf ages, between interior and field edges, and seasons. Significantly higher infestation and parasitism found on pre-flowered plants, younger leaves and during the rainy season. In addition, eggs and larvae are randomly distributed while pupae are clumped and parasitized eggs and pupae are clumped while that of larvae is random. Although E. thrax has never been reported on non-Musa species or weeds, other smaller Erionota species have been recorded on Asystacia intrusa, Ipomoea cairica, Mimosa pudica -

Although the frozen larvae toleratecl -19'C down to for 24 hrs, yet they avoided inoculative freezing by two ways: 1) to prevent water invasion onto ventraHntegument, through which ice-inoculation occurred, by lateral hairs and silken mat, 2) to choose hibernating site on east-northern surface of host tree trunk, where inoculation should hardly occur. The larvae accumulated glycerol in haemolymph to the amount of 6.5% of fresh body weight, together with O.5% trehalose. For comparison, cold resistance in larvae of Sasakia charondu hibernating in Iitter layer was also studied. They showed no inoculation avoidance de$pite re]atively weak ability of freezing resistance, and cuntained trehalose (1.4%) but no glycerol. Introduction Most insects hibernating above the ground in temperate or cold regions are exposed to coldness, more or Iess, hence they have developed abirities for cold resistance. Apart from co]d avoidance by migration or microhabitat selection (Hoshikawa et al., 1988), cold resistance has been studied along two lines : supercooling and freezing resistance (Asahina, 1969; Tsumuki, 1988; Leather et al,, 1993). And once acquired enough cold resistance, hibernating period is regarded as relatively safe and stable season in terms of population dynamics (Sakagami et al., 1984). -

L.D evyatkin & A. L Monastyrskii received 5.V.2003 Summary: A total of 67 species is added to the list of Hesperiidae of southern Vietnam, 15 of them being new for the country as a whole. A new subspecies, Pyroneura callineura natalia subspec. nov. is described and illustrated. Taxonomic notes on certain species are presented. Since the previous publication summarizing the knowledge of the Hesperiidae in the southern part of Vietnam (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 2000), several further localities have been visited by research expeditions and individual collectors. The annotated list below is based predominantly on the material collected in the Cat Tien Na ture Reserve in 2000 (no year is given for the label data in the list), which was most profoundly studied and proved to be very rich and diverse in terms of the butterfly fauna, and contains new records for the south of the country along with some taxonomic corrections made in view of the new data. Although some of the areas concerned in this paper may be geographically attributed to the southern part of Central Vietnam (or Annam), they were not regarded in our previous publica tions dedicated to the northern and central areas of the country (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 1999, 2002), the new data thus being supplementary to those published before on the south ern part of Vietnam (Devyatkin & M onastyrskii , 2000). -

The material was gathered on 14 sites located within the city borders. Observations confirmed the presence of 48 species of butterflies representing 5 families: Hesperidae (5 species), Papilionidae (3 species), Pieridae (9 species), Lycaenidae (13 species) and Nymphalidae (18 species). The most common species were Iphilcides podalirius, Papilio machaon, Colias croceus, Coenonympha pamphilus, Polyommatus icarus and Aricia agestis. Results are discussed on a background of two species lists from other urban areas of Balkan Penisula (Zagreb and Patras) as well as a diversity of the butterfly fauna of Montenegro. It is the first analysis of the butterfly fauna of Podgorica city. Key words: Lepidoptera, urban fauna, urban entomology, species richness, butterfly survey. Pietrzak, S.K.
