Unser Programm wird wöchentlich aktualisiert und präsentiert Klassiker sowie rare Filmdokumente aus der Sammlung des Filmarchiv Austria. WILLI FORST Ob als begnadeter Schauspieler, Sänger, Produzent oder Filmregisseur – Willi Forst hat wie kein anderer jenen Charme und Schmelz verkörpert, für den der »Wiener Film« zum Inbegriff wurde. Es sind Filme, die die Zeit um die Jahrhundertwende heraufbeschwören, leichte, komische Unterhaltungsstücke, immer mit einer gewissen Verve und besonderer Spritzigkeit inszeniert. 1903 in Wien als Wilhelm Anton Frohs geboren, sammelt Willi Forst schon früh Bühnenerfahrung. 1927 spielt er bereits eine Hauptrolle an der Seite von Marlene Dietrich in CAFÉ ELEKTRIC. Forst wird zum Star des Wiener Films, den er perfektioniert. Während in Nazi-Deutschland das Niveau der Komödien immer tiefer sinkt, erreicht es mit Forst und seinen ersten Regiearbeiten LEISE FLEHEN MEINE LIEDER, MASKERADE und BURGTHEATER neue Höhen. Willi Forst, A 1934 WIENER BLUT Willi Forst, D 1942 DER ANDERE WIENER FILM Deutschsprachige EmigrantInnenfilme 1934–1936 Als Gegenstück widmet sich die Online-Retrospektive Der andere Wiener Film jenen Zeitgenossen Forsts, die – anders als er – mit dem Aufstieg der Nazis ins Exil gehen mussten: den ProtagonistInnen des »Unerwünschten Kinos«. Die Schau präsentiert ausgewählte Produktionen des deutschsprachigen EmigrantInnenfilms 1934–1936, denen ein zentraler Sammlungs- und Forschungsschwerpunkt des Filmarchiv Austria gewidmet ist, und macht sie damit erstmals überhaupt in digitaler Form zugänglich. Die Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten hat nicht nur ein politisches Erdbeben zur Folge. Verfolgt, bedroht, beraubt, bleibt für viele jüdische Filmschaffende nur die Emigration, die traditionell mit den Zielorten Frankreich, England und USA verbunden wird. Tatsächlich bedeuten aber für etliche aus Deutschland Vertriebene die unmittelbaren Nachbarländer einen ersten, zumindest vorübergehend sicheren Hafen. Wien hat dabei eine besondere Anziehungskraft, der deutschsprachige Emigrantenfilm erobert hier für ein paar wenige Jahre die Kinos im noch freien Europa. Bereits 1934 erfolgten die ersten Schritte zur Durchsetzung des »Arierparagraphen« in der österreichischen Filmproduktion. In dieser schwierigen Situation bildet sich in Wien, Budapest, Prag und Stockholm eine vom deutschen Markt unabhängige Produktionslandschaft heraus - das Unerwünschte Kino. So entstehen zwischen 1934 und 1937 zwei Dutzend deutschsprachige Filme abseits »reichsdeutscher Ausgrenzung und Verfolgung. Mit dem Projekt »Unerwünschtes Kino« hat das Filmarchiv Austria in jahrelanger, weltumspannender Recherche- und Forschungsarbeit das nahezu verschüttete Erbe des deutschsprachigen Emigrantenkinos 1934–1937 Stück für Stück wieder sichtbar gemacht. Each chapter examines one or two highly significant, but radically unfamiliar, moments in the history of operetta during Austria’s five successive political eras in the first half of the twentieth century. With additional contributions from the Filmarchiv Austria, the exhibition focuses on Austrian and German Jewish émigrés—including Max Ophuls, Erich von Stroheim, and Billy Wilder—as they look back on the city they left behind, as well as an international array of contemporary filmmakers and artists, such as Jem Cohen, VALIE EXPORT, Michael Haneke, Kurt Kren, Stanley Kubrick, Richard Linklater, Nicholas Roeg, and Ulrich Seidl, whose visions of Vienna reveal the powerful hold the city continues to exert over our collective unconscious. Many examples of self-reflexive cinematic instances are connected to music in one way or another. The various ways in which music is integrated in films can produce instances of intertextuality, inter- and transmediality, and self-referentiality. However, instead of relying solely on the analysis of the films in order to interrogate the conception of such scenes, this article examines several screenplays. They include musical instructions and motivations for diegetic musical performances. However, not only music itself, but also music as a subject matter can be found in these screenplays, as part of the dialogue or instructions for the mis-en-scène. The work of Austrian screenwriter and director Walter Reisch (1903–1983) will serve as a case study to discuss various forms of self-reflexivity in the context of genre studies, screenwriting studies and the early sound film. Different forms and categories of self-referential uses of music in Reisch’s work will be examined and contextualized within early sound cinema in Austria and Germany in the 1930s.

In Sweden, the humanitarian organizations Röda Korset (Swedish Red Cross, RK) and Rädda Barnen (Swedish Save the Children, RB) reveal an apparent awareness of the impact of film. Throughout the Second World War, RK appeared in several films, primarily in rela- tion to reports of refugees arriving in Sweden and the 1945 rescue transport with the White Buses. These films presented some of the consequences of the Second World War and the Holocaust, promot- ing neutral Sweden as an active helping hand. During the immediate post-war period, the short-lived organization Svenska Europahjälpen (Swedish European Aid, SE) suddenly commissioned a number of films. These post-war representations are best described as educational and promotional films, supplemented by explicit spoken or written 111 war remains exhortations to donate money, exemplified by the quotation with which I opened this chapter. The aim of this survey is to investigate the SE’s media strategy and its consequences. Critical Notes on Two Films by Austrian Director Willi Forst Francesco Bono Dipartimento di Filosofia, Scienze Sociali, Umane e della Formazione Università degli Studi di Perugia, Perugia, Italy Abstract This essay aims to critically reflect on the work of Austrian film director Willi Forst, devoting special attention to two of Forst’s films of the 1930s, Mazurka and Allotria. Forst’s career developed successfully in both Austria and Germany between the 1930s and the end of the 1950s and Forst has been widely counted among the major figures in German-speaking cinema of the time. In scholarly works on the history of Austrian film, Forst’s name has been typically associated with the musical genre and the so-called Viennese Film, of which Forst has been regarded as the indisputable master. In this association of Forst’s work with the Viennese Film and the musical genre, long predominant among film historians, one may detect a reason for the scant consideration dedicated so far to films such as Mazurka and Allotria which, not belonging to the above genres, have been usually regarded as of minor relevance in Forst’s work. With the aim of correcting this assumption, the present essay intends to critically focus on Mazurka and Allotria, placing them within the wider context of Forst’s work. Though the two films belong to different genres, Mazurka being a melodrama, Allotria a comedy, they appear to have a significant number of points in common, and through their discussion and comparison, this essay hopes to contribute to a better understanding of Forst’s oeuvre, shedding light on a number of facets of Forst’s work to which scarse attention has been devoted so far.
