Exploring Cultural Differences in Game Reception: JRPGs in Germany and Japan Stefan Brückner1, Yukiko Sato1, Shuichi Kurabayashi2 and Ikumi Waragai1 Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University1 5322 Endo, Fujisawa, Kanagawa 252-0882 Japan +81-466-49-3404 [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Cygames Research2 16-17 Nanpeidai, Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0036 Japan +81-3-6758-0562 [email protected] ABSTRACT In this paper we present the first results of an ongoing research project, focused on examining the European reception of Japanese video games, and comparing it with the reception in Japan. We hope to contribute towards a better understanding of how players’ perception and evaluation of a game are influenced by their cultural background. Applying a grounded theory approach, we conducted a qualitative content analysis of articles from German video game websites, user comments, written in response to these articles, as well as Japanese and German user reviews from the respective Amazon online stores and Steam. Focusing on the reception of three Japanese RPGs, our findings show that considerable differences exist in how various elements of the games are perceived. We also briefly discuss certain lexical differences in the way players write about games, indicating fundamental differences in how Japanese and German players talk (and think) about games. Keywords Japanese games, reception, Germany, user reviews, QDA, grounded theory INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a rise in attempts to utilize the vast amounts of text on digital games available online, by using natural language processing (NLP) methods.

  • The Success of the Overwatch League: Is It Sustainable?
The Success of the Overwatch League: Is it Sustainable? An Honors Thesis (HONR 499) by Tyler Nelson Thesis Advisor Dr. Khirey Walker Ball State University Muncie, Indiana May 2020 Expected Date of Graduation May 2020 Abstract Esports are a growing industry across the world. This thesis reviews the history/success of several esport leagues and identifies the factors that make these leagues successful. As a result of preliminary research, the primary goal of this study will be to develop a model that could predict the success of esport leagues. These factors include mainstream appeal of esports, league structure examples, and general broadcasting reach. The model is then used to examine the Overwatch League, an esport league that began competition in 2018, and concludes that the Overwatch League is structured for sustained success in the esport market. Acknowledgements I want to thank my parents and Audrey for supporting me while I worked full-time and completed my schooling. Without their encouragement, it would have been difficult to complete this thesis. I would like to thank Sarah and Norm, who took a chance on me and allowed me to work in the sport industry while I completed my degree. Their understanding with my schedule and time commitments is greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank Dr. Walker, whose assistance and guidance has been invaluable throughout this process. 1 Process Analysis Statement The route to the completion of my thesis has been long and winding, and extremely difficult for me. In the summer between my junior and senior years, I completed an internship with my current employer.

Game Narrative Review ==================== Your name (one name, please): Mostafa Haque Your school: Dakota State University Your email: [email protected] Month/Year you submitted this review: December 2015 ==================== Game Title: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Platform: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 Genre: Role-playing game Release Date: 19 May 2015 Developer: CD Projekt Red Publisher: CD Projekt Game Writer/Creative Director/Narrative Designer: Marcin Blacha Borys Pugacz-Muraszkiewicz. Based on the works of Andrzej Sapkowski Overview “Evil is Evil. Lesser, greater, middling - it makes no difference. The degree is arbitrary; the definition’s blurred. If I am to choose between one evil or another, I'd rather not choose at all " - Geralt of Rivia Set in the dark fantasy world, envisioned by Andrzej Sapkowski, the Witcher game franchise strives to deconstruct and reconstruct popular fantasy and fairy tale tropes in inventive, unorthodox ways. While many other modern day franchises are termed ‘mature’ simply because of violent and sexual content, the Witcher franchise lives up to its label by utilizing its inherent sexual and violent content, not to gratify its players, but to ask questions which would otherwise be impossible to frame. The third installment in the series follows Geralt of Rivia, professional monster hunter, as he tackles war crimes, social injustice, xenophobia and genocide on an epic quest to find his adopted daughter, Ciri, (and potentially save the world while he is at it). Characters • Geralt of Rivia: With a gruff exterior and a mostly gruff interior, Geralt of Rivia (ironically not from the kingdom of Rivia), is the anti-heroic protagonist of the Witcher franchise.
