Abstracts for IAL 6- ABLS Joint Meeting (2008) AÐALSTEINSSON, KOLBEINN 1, HEIÐMARSSON, STARRI 2 and VILHELMSSON, ODDUR 1 1The University of Akureyri, Borgir Nordurslod, IS-600 Akureyri, Iceland, 2Icelandic Institute of Natural History, Akureyri Division, Borgir Nordurslod, IS-600 Akureyri, Iceland Isolation and characterization of non-phototrophic bacterial symbionts of Icelandic lichens Lichens are symbiotic organisms comprise an ascomycete mycobiont, an algal or cyanobacterial photobiont, and typically a host of other bacterial symbionts that in most cases have remained uncharacterized. In the current project, which focuses on the identification and preliminary characterization of these bacterial symbionts, the species composition of the resident associate microbiota of eleven species of lichen was investigated using both 16S rDNA sequencing of isolated bacteria growing in pure culture and Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) of the 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region amplified from DNA isolated directly from lichen samples. Gram-positive bacteria appear to be the most prevalent, especially actinomycetes, although bacilli were also observed. Gamma-proteobacteria and species from the Bacteroides/Chlorobi group were also observed. Among identified genera are Rhodococcus, Micrococcus, Microbacterium, Bacillus, Chryseobacterium, Pseudomonas, Sporosarcina, Agreia, Methylobacterium and Stenotrophomonas . Metabolite segregation amongst all studied Roccella species, including R. montagnei and R. belangeriana, gave some insight into the taxonomy of the latter two species, which we interpret as separate species. -

Opuscula Philolichenum, 11: 145-302. 2012. *pdf effectively published online 23October2012 via (http://sweetgum.nybg.org/philolichenum/) The Annotated Checklist of Lichens, Lichenicolous and Allied Fungi of Channel Islands National Park 1 2 KERRY KNUDSEN AND JANA KOCOURKOVÁ ABSTRACT. – For Channel Islands National Park, at the beginning of the 21st century, a preliminary baseline of diversity of 504 taxa in 152 genera and 56 families is established, comprising 448 lichens, 48 lichenicolous fungi, and 8 allied fungi. Verrucaria othmarii K. Knudsen & L. Arcadia nom. nov. is proposed for the illegitimate name V. rupicola (B. de Lesd.) Breuss, concurrently a neotype is also designated. Placidium boccanum is reported new for North America and California. Bacidia coprodes and Polycoccum pulvinatum are reported new for California. Catillaria subviridis is verified as occurring in California. Acarospora rhabarbarina is no longer recognized as occurring in North America. Seven species are considered endemic to Channel Islands National Park: Arthonia madreana, Caloplaca obamae, Dacampia lecaniae, Lecania caloplacicola, Lecania ryaniana, Plectocarpon nashii and Verrucaria aspecta. At least 54 species, many of which occur in Mexico, are only known in California from Channel Islands National Park INTRODUCTION Channel Islands National Park (heretofore referred to as CINP) in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties in southern California consists of five islands totalling approximately 346 square miles in area (221331 acres, 89569 ha, 900 km2). Santa Barabara Island, with an area of 1.02 square miles (639 acres, 259 ha, 2.63 km2) is the smallest island in CINP. It is a considered a member of the southern islands which include San Nicolas Island, Santa Catalina Island, and San Clemente Island, all outside the boundaries of the national park. -

Introduction The present classification is based in part on earlier versions published in Systema Ascomycetum and Myconet (see http://www.fieldmuseum.org/myconet/) and reflects the numerous changes made in the Deep Hypha issue of Mycologia (Spatafora et al. 2006), in Hibbett et al. (2007) and those listed in Myconet Notes Nos. 4408-4750 (Lumbsch & Huhndorf 2007). It includes all accepted genera and higher taxa of Ascomycota. New synonymous generic names are included in the outline. In future outlines attempts will be made to incorporate all synonymous generic names (for a list of synonymous generic names, see Eriksson & Hawksworth 1998). A first checklist of the lichens and lichenicolous fungi from the Republic of Article info Mauritius is presented. It is based on older literature reports and on collections made by the Received: 29 Sept. 2019 authors, mainly in 2016, from the isles of Mauritius and Rodrigues. A total of 216 species Revision received: 11 Mar. 2020 are accepted, either as relevant specimens have recently been critically studied or revised Accepted: 16 Mar. 2020 by lichen taxonomists, or as we have collected and identified such material ourselves. Published: 2 Jun. 2020 A further 226 taxa have been reported from Mauritius but are not accepted here, either Associate Editor as no relevant herbarium material has recently been examined, or as previous records are Nicolas Magain dubious or erroneous; 111 taxa have been newly described from Mauritius in the past, plus 12 of which the Mauritian origin is dubious. Here we report 56 taxa as new for the island of Mauritius, and we describe two new genera (Baidera, Serusiauxia) and eight new species (Baidera mauritiana, Biatoropsis millanesiana, Chapsa alletii, Collemopsidium mauritiae, Nyungwea pyneei, Porina florensii, Pyrenula muriciliata, Serusiauxia inexpectata). Two new combinations are proposed: Loekoesia apostatica (≡ Lecanora apostatica) and Sticta flavireagens (≡ Stictina flavireagens). Phylogenetic analyses are presented for species of Arthoniales, Biatoropsis, Porinaceae, Pyrenulaceae and Teloschistales. -

This page intentionally left blank Lichen Biology Lichens are symbiotic organisms in which fungi and algae and/or cyanobacteria form an intimate biological union. This diverse group is found in almost all terrestrial habitats from the tropics to polar regions. In this second edition, four completely new chapters cover recent developments in the study of these fascinating organisms, including lichen genetics and sexual reproduction, stress physiology and symbiosis, and the carbon economy and environmental role of lichens. The whole text has been fully updated, with chapters covering anato- mical, morphological and developmental aspects; the chemistry of the unique secondary metabolites produced by lichens and the contribution of these sub- stances to medicine and the pharmaceutical industry; patterns of lichen photosynthesis and respiration in relation to different environmental condi- tions; the role of lichens in nitrogen fixation and mineral cycling; geographical patterns exhibited by these widespread symbionts; and the use of lichens as indicators of air pollution. This is a valuable reference for both students and researchers interested in lichenology. T H O M A S H .
