When I made that comment I did not anticipate the challenges that would arise. As you all know in late January/early February Mr Duff, the former Executive Director, confessed to stealing at least $60,000 from the Association. The Courts ultimately dealt with Mr Duff. However the Association was left in a very difficult financial situation. Not only was the Association out of pocket but it also had to make good a large amount of money to the Canterbury Foundation, the Trust that now “owns” the hockey facilities at Porritt and Nunweek Parks. With the understanding of the Foundation this financial difficulty has now been resolved. I thank the Trustees and particularly Peter Cox, the Chairman, for his support and understanding in these difficult times. When the Christchurch City Council was made aware of the parlous financial situation it came to the aid of the Association and provided us with a loan. This has helped to ensure that the Association could continue to provide the hockey community with the expected services. As can be seen from the accounts the Association is now in a relatively good position notwithstanding that we do have some debts and this includes paying back the Council loan. After Mr Duff’s departure the Board was unable to appoint a new Chief Executive Officer until the Association was sure that it could afford it. It was also decided that the Board needed to have the Association’s finances under control before such an appointment was made. As a result the Board members took on the various tasks necessary to provide the Association with the required leadership. The Executive Committee of Chris Maister, Graeme Paterson and I have met almost every week to provide operational guidance as well as ensuring that the financial situation improved. Thank you to Chris Maister and Graeme Paterson for your efforts. To my other Board members I thank you for attending what must have seemed like a never ending round of meetings. The staff of the Association has, since Mr Duff’s departure, taken on an enormous work load and they are to be heartily congratulated. In particular I would like to thank Margaret Huckstep for her tremendous efforts in running the office. This year the first men’s international was played on our new turf with New Zealand playing Australia. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who helped make the evening a great success. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ CANTERBURY HOCKEY ASSOCIATION – 2003 ANNUAL REPORT I would also like to thank Lincoln Churchill and Lyndsey Leask for their hard work and fine contribution to the Association’s operations. Similarly I would like to thank Peter Seymour, Bill Lynn and Bevan Fergusson for their efforts in maintaining the Association’s facilities to a very high standard. Last year the Board decided that it wanted to minimise the cost to players when they represent Canterbury. Due to the tremendous efforts of Michele Wattez, our Sponsorship Manager, this was to a large extent achieved. Thank you Michele for your excellent work. Next year it is hoped to further reduce each player’s costs. Congratulations to the Cats and Cavaliers who finished 2nd and 3rd in their respective national competitions. Congratulations also to those players selected to represent New Zealand and in particular to Diana Weavers for being chosen as New Zealand Women’s hockey player of the year. The other representative teams did not achieve the expected success; however I know that all teams gave their best. In August Derek Torkington was appointed Chief Executive Officer. He is now settling into his role and I am sure that all of the hockey community wish him well in his endeavours. At the present time the grandstand at Porritt Park is being renovated and we all look forward to using the new facility next season. I am not too sure whether or not I should once again say I am looking forward to the challenges of 2004. Hopefully it might be a good omen this time. Without the high level of financial assistance from these trusts Canterbury Hockey would have been unable to continue with many of its current programmes. This would have been of great disadvantage to our members. We would like to express our gratitude to all those who have provided funding, in particular; the Scottwood Group, the New Zealand Community Trust, the Lion Foundation, the Community Trust, the Southern Trust and the Canterbury Foundation. Corporate Sponsorship We welcome on board Canterbury Hockey’s new Corporate Sponsors and thank all the existing sponsors who continue to provide support. It is our aim to establish Sponsorship Partnerships, at all levels, which provide benefits to both organisations. With the increased profile of hockey in Canterbury, many businesses have gained a great deal of exposure from their involvement with Canterbury Hockey; this includes listings on our sponsor board and website, web links, logo placements, signage around the turfs and naming rights to teams and competitions. Just Hockey has provided a tremendous amount of assistance to Canterbury Hockey by supplying equipment and uniforms plus the sponsorship of our Coaching Forums. Cookie Time’s support as sponsor for the Hatch Cup Team was much appreciated; their new tracksuits look fantastic. Our new Sponsor Board at Porritt Park is thanks to great work from Action Signs.
