    THURSDAY 8 SEPTEMBER 2016: SESSIONS 1‐4 Maciej Fortuna and Krzysztof Dys (Academy of Music, Poznán) BIOGRAPHIES Maciej Fortuna is a Polish trumpeter, composer and music producer. He has a PhD degree in Musical Arts and an MA degree in Law and actively pursues his artistic career. In his work, he strives to create his own language of musical expression and expand the sound palette of his instrument. He enjoys experimenting with combining different art forms. An important element of his creative work consists in the use of live electronics. He creates and directs multimedia concerts and video productions. Krzysztof Dys is a Polish jazz pianist. He has a PhD degree in Musical Arts. So far he has collaborated with the great Polish vibrafonist Jerzy Milian, with famous saxophonist Mikoaj Trzaska, and as well with clarinettist Wacaw Zimpel. Dys has worked on a regular basis with young, Poznań‐based trumpeter, Maciej Fortuna. Their album Tropy has been well‐received by the audience and critics as well. Dys also plays in Maciej Fortuna Quartet, with Jakub Mielcarek, double bass, and Przemysaw Jarosz, drums. In 2013 the group toured outside Poland with a project ‘Jazz from Poland’, with a goal to present the work of unappreciated or forgotten or Polish jazz composers. The main inspiration for Krzysztof Dys is the work of Russian composers Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin, Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev, American artists like Bill Evans and Miles Davis, and last but not least, a great Polish composer, Grayna Bacewicz. Document Type: Work overview, Critical essay Introduction Further Readings about the Topic Introduction Julius Caesar contains elements of both Shakespeare's histories and tragedies, and has been classified as a "problem play" by some scholars. Set in Rome in 44 b.c., the play describes a senatorial conspiracy to murder the emperor Caesar and the political turmoil that ensues in the aftermath of the assassination. The emperor's demise, however, is not the primary concern for critics of Julius Caesar; rather, most critics are interested in the events surrounding the act--the organization of the conspiracy against Caesar and the personal and political repercussions of the murder. Shakespeare's tragedies often feature the death of the titular character at the play's end. Many commentators have noted that Julius Caesar's unusual preempting of this significant event--Caesar is killed less than halfway through the play--diminishes the play's power early in the third act. Scholars are interested in the play's unconventional structure and its treatment of political conflict, as well as Shakespeare's depiction of Rome and the struggles the central characters face in balancing personal ambition, civic duty, and familial obligation.     1 Introduction 1.1. Defining the subject “It is the duty of Polish musicologists to know more or less as much about us as they do about the composers who live in Poland”1. These words come from Roman Palester’s letter to the organisers of a sym­ posium devoted to the works of Polish émigré composers which took place in Warsaw in 1988, a project initiated by the Musicology Section of the Polish Composers’ Union. The conference was an exceptional event, and the first one of its kind. The papers to be presented there were to combine critical and aesthetic interpretation with artistic evaluation of the works, and some of them were to be devoted to Antoni Szalowski2. Unfortunately, the achievements of Szalowski, one of the main represen­ tatives of Polish Neoclassicism, were, after all, omitted from the con­ ference programme. Roman Palester described this as “something of a scandal”3. Referring to the title of the symposium, “Music wrongly 1 R. Organizacja konkursu to tak- że promocja Polski jako miejsca, gdzie odbywają się wydarzenia artystyczne o międzynarodowym zasięgu. Podstawowe założenia Konkurs odbywa się co dwa lata i może być przeznaczony dla róż- nych składów wykonawczych. Druga edycja konkursu odbędzie się w dwóch kategoriach – fortepian i zespoły kameralne. W kon- kursie mogą uczestniczyć muzycy-instrumentaliści zgłaszający się indywidualnie oraz jako zespoły kameralne (od duetów po składy dwunastoosobowe). W konkursie nie ma ograniczeń ze względu na wiek i obywatelstwo uczestników. II MIĘDZYNARODOWY KONKURS MUZYKI POLSKIEJ 5 Uczestnicy będą prezentować utwory 56 polskich kompozytorów, tworzących głównie w XIX i XX wieku. Przesłuchania konkursowe odbędą się w Filharmonii Podkarpackiej im. Artura Malawskiego w Rzeszowie od 11 do 18 września 2021 roku.
