MEETING MINUTES Suburban Hockey League General League Meeting February 4, 2020 Garfield Heights Community Center 6:30 PM

Joe Kummerl provided an update regarding the Cleveland Monsters. Upcoming events: CSHL Champions Day and Try Hockey for Free Event, March 15,2020. Learn to Play Graduation Day, March 29, 2020 and Coaches Day, April 4, 2020. Joe provided details for each event. Joe also seeking input regarding changes to future CSHL Night at the Monsters.

Mary-Kate Kendel provided an update regarding the Mentor Ice Breakers. Upcoming events: Cancer Awareness Night February 22, 2020. A “teddy-bear toss” and a post-game skate will also occur that evening. The team’s playing schedule has also been adjusted. Mary-Kate provided details for each event.

Chris Kendel provided updates regarding the CSHL playoffs. Chris provided a copy of a memorandum regarding an overview of playoffs sent to program leadership.

John Stojak provided an update regarding the NCHSHL playoffs and the 2020 Buckeye Cup. NCHSHL playoffs are February 21-23, 2020. NCHSHL is hosting the Buckeye Cup, March 6-8, 2020. Still seeking volunteers to assist with score keeping and time keeping. CSHL programs providing volunteers will receive monetary credit to their respective program.

Jim Smith requested approval for a change to the 2020-2021 CSHL Season. Request to change pre- season scheduling to September 19,2020 and the start of pre-season play would be September 24, 2020. Change was approved. Smith reviewed an email from CSHL Commissioner and MidAM Vice President Tim O’Shaughnessy regarding the “ Cup”, a state tournament for the 12U Level. Scheduled for March 13-15, 2020 in Columbus. To date, one CSHL team has registered for this event.

Cathy Fievet, MidAM, reminded all that Tier I and II tryouts cannot begin until April 7, 2020.

Committee Reports:

--Mike Radosevic, Discipline Committee, reported there is a low of game misconducts at the youth level and offered congratulations to the coaches. No disciplinary hearings have been required at the youth level. --- --Bob Shenk, 8U Division, discussed the idea of posting scores at the 8U level in the future. --Pam Rice mentioned there are a lot of missing score sheets.

New Business --Smith reminded all that any proposals for changes to CSHL Standing Rules are due 30 days prior to the CSHL Annual Meeting on May 12, 2020. Mike Radosevic would like to have any proposals as soon as possible to review and post. Smith also reminded all that the election for seats on the CSHL Board of Directors will also occur during the CSHL Annual Meeting.

--Smith reviewed notes from Tim O’Shaughnessy regarding the USA Hockey Winter Meeting. Highlights: Increased enforcement of SafeSport. Most violations arise from unsupervised locker rooms. USA Hockey President Jim Smith’s earlier letter regarding hateful language has resulted in over 50 match penalties in the MidAM District in the last three months. There is increasing movement to considering cross-ice at the 10U Level. Several districts have started pilot programs. That change is unlikely for 2021 season.

A discussion regarding the concept of cross-ice provided numerous ideas and considerations from CSHL program leadership. Concerns regarding the MidAM annual meeting were expressed.

Old Business: Smith provided an update regarding the goaltending clinic that was held the last weekend in December. USA Hockey’s Steve Thompson and Dave Caruso led the sessions. Several CSHL coaches and participated in the day-long event. Tim Veach, Gilmour, reported that Gilmour is hosting the MidAM District Tier I and Tier II Girls’ and Women’s District Championship tournament. An open hockey event on March 7th for all girls in the district will occur. Wendy Brown and Rick Kish discussed the continuing development of girls’ hockey programs. Brown is looking to working with CSHL program in joint efforts to grow the girls’ game. Brown reviewed the current relationship between the Lady Barons and Gilmour and the number of opportunities available for girls’ hockey. Reiterated that her teams are strictly part time. Wendy and Rick will continue to work together to move forward. Marty Kerr expressed appreciation for the support to save Alice Noble Ice Arena. The group raised $212,000 in four weeks. A group of local businesses people will assist in the operation/management of the ice arena. New Business: Chris Kendel reported that Betty Ann Maulorico, one of the founding members of the CSHL died. She had been involved in the league for nearly 36 years. The CSHL will be donating in her name to the Holy Family Hospice House. Ed Garrity reported that North Olmsted’s ice rink will be completing a $2.2 million renovation project.
