Les harmonies audacieuses de CARLO GESUALDO Carlo Gesualdo répondent aux grappes sonores et aux lignes serrantes du compositeur allemand. Wolfgang Rihm": Fetzen IV pour accordéon et alto Toute une série d’œuvres de Wolfgang Rihm prend comme Dyade pour violon et contrebasse Uber Die Linie VI pour flûte alto, violon et violoncelle objet la ligne instrumentale, afranchie de tout système, se déployant librement dans l’espace pour former, comme dans Carlo Gesualdo": Répons pour la Semaine Sainte (sélection de motets à six voix) alterné avec Dyade pour violon et contrebasse et Uber Die Linie VI pour Wolfgang Rihm": Sieben Passionstexte flûte alto, violon et violoncelle, des arabesques qui jamais Musiciens de l’Ensemble L’Instant Donné": Mayu Sato-Brémaud, flûte ; Saori Furukawa, violon.; ne se coagulent en une ferme polyphonie. Dans Tenebrae, le compositeur reprend les sept motets sur Production Festival d’Automne à Paris des textes latins de la Passion qui composaient ses Vigilia pour chœur à six voix, cette fois-ci confrontés aux Répons pour la Semaine Sainte de Carlo Gesualdo (publiés en 1611). On entend ainsi deux mises en musique de ces textes, destinés à être chantés avant la résurrection de la lumière pascale. Un étrange répons s’instaure entre les poussées de fièvre chromatique qui gagnent la musique du compositeur de la Renaissance et l’harmonie comme hors temps de Rihm, où les voix hésitent, s’interrompent, forment des grappes sonores lumineuses ou retrouvent la tonalité de manière oblique, puis se libèrent à nouveau pour cheminer le long de textes qui disent l’obscurité, le doute et la soufrance. Il a détruit les prisons de l’enfer et a renversé les puissances du diable. 8 Carlo Gesualdo Répons pour la Semaine Sainte Les Responsoria et alia ad Ofcium Hebdomadae Sanctae spectantia, titre original des Répons, peuvent être considérés comme le testament de Gesualdo, personnage étrange, violent, vindicatif et cependant d’une grande piété : figure complexe et contradictoire, qui joue éminemment un rôle-clé dans cette période charnière qu’est le début du XVIIe siècle, son apport est fondamental dans l’afrmation d’une musique nouvelle, dramatique et moderne — la « Seconda prattica ».     Robin Maconie: Stockhausen’s Cosmic Pulses 2009–14 (copyright) 1 Stockhausen’s Cosmic Pulses ROBIN MACONIE Some people chase tornados; others go after black holes. From the late 1950s Stockhausen was fascinated by the idea of sounds in rotation and how to realise them in a technical sense, by means of an array of loudspeakers. Completed in 2007, Cosmic Pulses is Stockhausen’s final electronic composition.1 For a number of reasons I believe the composer knew it would be his last. The work was completed in a rush. In many ways, notably in terms of the sound material, which is very basic, it remains a sketch. The music can be described as a massive rotating sound mass, composed in 24 separately spinning frequency layers. The work thickens gradually to 24 layers, then reduces symmetrically upward in an ascending spiral that ends quite abruptly. An audience may experience the sensation of falling headlong into a black hole, or, if one is an optimist, of being carried aloft on the whirlwind like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. A tornado is an effect of a natural imbalance between temperature layers in the atmosphere, tipped into motion by the earth’s rotation, which moves progressively faster toward the equator. The rotating air mass that results spirals upwards and generates a powerful electrical charge. A black hole by comparison is an effect of gravitation creating an imbalance in spacetime.     PRESS RELEASE – for immediate release 72nd GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION Jaehyuck Choi wins 1st Prize at Geneva Competition – Composition 2017 Geneva, 28.11.2017 – Korean composer Jaehyuck Choi (23 years old) was awarded First Prize at the 72nd Geneva International Music Competition for his concerto for clarinet & orchestra: “Nocturne III”. Jury Chairman Matthias Pintscher praised the expressivity, colour, movement and emotion conveyed through the winning piece. Jaehyuck. Choi is currently a student at the Juilliard School in New York. He has won many composition awards in the United States and in Korea. Second Prize was attributed to Mr Yair Klartag (32 years old, Israel) for his piece “Bocca Chiusa”. The Audience Prize was awarded to Mr. Hankyeol Yoon (23 years old, Korea)., and the young Audience Prize was divided between Mr. Jaehyuck Choi & Mr. Hankyeol Yoon. This year, all three finalists were also commissioned to compose a work for violin solo, to be performed during the Menuhin Competition 2018, which will take place next spring in Geneva. Candidates had to submit a concerto for clarinet and orchestra. After the first round, which took place in June, the official Jury, chaired by world-famous composer Matthias Pintscher, selected 3 finalists amongst 67 applications received from around the world (26 countries, 55 men, 12 women, 16-30 years old) to pursue to the final round: Nocturne III for clarinet & orchestra by Mr. Jaehyuck Choi (22 years old, Korea) Bocca Chiusa for clarinet & orchestra by Mr. Yair Klartag (31 years old, Israel) Prank for clarinet & orchestra by Mr. Hankyeol Yoon (23 years old, Korea) Their compositions were performed as world premiere during a public final round on November 26th in Geneva, Switzerland, by soloists Fabio Di Càsola, Jérôme Comte and Ernesto Molinari and the Geneva Chamber Orchestra.

    JOHN CAGE’S ENTANGLEMENT WITH THE IDEAS OF COOMARASWAMY Edward James Crooks PhD University of York Music July 2011 John Cage’s Entanglement with the Ideas of Coomaraswamy by Edward Crooks Abstract The American composer John Cage was famous for the expansiveness of his thought. In particular, his borrowings from ‘Oriental philosophy’ have directed the critical and popular reception of his works. But what is the reality of such claims? In the twenty years since his death, Cage scholars have started to discover the significant gap between Cage’s presentation of theories he claimed he borrowed from India, China, and Japan, and the presentation of the same theories in the sources he referenced. The present study delves into the circumstances and contexts of Cage’s Asian influences, specifically as related to Cage’s borrowings from the British-Ceylonese art historian and metaphysician Ananda K. Coomaraswamy. In addition, Cage’s friendship with the Jungian mythologist Joseph Campbell is detailed, as are Cage’s borrowings from the theories of Jung. Particular attention is paid to the conservative ideology integral to the theories of all three thinkers. After a new analysis of the life and work of Coomaraswamy, the investigation focuses on the metaphysics of Coomaraswamy’s philosophy of art. The phrase ‘art is the imitation of nature in her manner of operation’ opens the doors to a wide- ranging exploration of the mimesis of intelligible and sensible forms. Comparing Coomaraswamy’s ‘Traditional’ idealism to Cage’s radical epistemological realism demonstrates the extent of the lack of congruity between the two thinkers. In a second chapter on Coomaraswamy, the extent of the differences between Cage and Coomaraswamy are revealed through investigating their differing approaches to rasa , the Renaissance, tradition, ‘art and life’, and museums.
