Les protagonistes centraux du spectacle vivant, le concepteur, l’interprète et la technologie, sont au cœur des ateliers pratiques de l’académie pluridisciplinaire. L’académie réunit cette année Georges Aperghis, George Benjamin, Chaya Czernowin, Peter Eötvös, Robert Henke, Hèctor Parra, Matthias Pintscher ainsi que l’Ensemble intercontemporain (ensemble associé de l’académie), l’ensemble EXAUDI, le Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France et la compagnie ORO-Loïc Touzé. En 2014, soutenue par ces artistes de premier plan, l’académie se focalise sur l’écriture vocale, la dramaturgie musicale et l’élaboration du spectacle vivant dans le monde du numérique. L’ensemble vocal EXAUDI revient pour la deuxième année consécutive : les chanteurs bri- tanniques se joignent à l’Ensemble intercontemporain pour participer à l’atelier de compo- sition pour deux voix et ensemble dirigé par Matthias Pintscher, sous la houlette de George Benjamin. Ils participent également à l’atelier In Vivo Danse auprès du chorégraphe Loïc Touzé, de sa compagnie ORO et du compositeur Hèctor Parra. Georges Aperghis dirige avec quelques-uns de ses fidèles interprètes un atelier In Vivo Théâtre musical tourné vers la dramaturgie musicale, tandis que l’artiste de musique électronique Robert Henke pense simultanément l’œuvre et le lieu de sa projection, en l’occurrence la Nef du CENTQUATRE- Paris avec l’atelier In Vivo Electro Live. L’académie, qui bénéficie de la proximité et de la densité du festival de l’Ircam, permet aux stagiaires de participer librement à une série d’évènements étroitement associés : analyses de leurs œuvres par les compositeurs et invités, créations des compositeurs du Cursus 2 de l’Ircam, conférences des artistes, « open space » pour favoriser des rencontres et activités informelles entre les stagiaires, concerts et créations expérimentales, sorties des labos de l’Ircam. Deux semaines et demie d’intense activité, dont le public peut découvrir, en accès libre, les sorties d’ateliers. Quatre partenaires principaux participent à la mise en œuvre de l’académie : l’Ensemble intercontemporain, ensemble associé permanent, le CENTQUATRE-Paris, l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France et Les Spectacles vivants-Centre Pompidou. Cette troisième édition s’appuie par ailleurs sur le concours d’acteurs importants du domaine de la culture et de la formation supérieure : le Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, le Council on International Education Exchange (universités américaines), la Lucerne Festival Academy, Charleroi Danses, le Centre chorégraphique de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles et micadanses, Paris. 4 Cahier des compositeurs / Academy Yearbook A major rendezvous for emerging creation in Paris, ManiFeste places music in the domain of the “arts of time” (theater, dance, cinema, staged visual arts, digital arts, etc.). The primary protagonists from the performing arts, — the creator, the performer, and the technology included — are at the heart of hands-on workshops during this multidisciplinary academy. This year, the academy brings together Georges Aperghis, George Benjamin, Chaya Czernowin, Peter Eötvös, Robert Henke, Hèctor Parra, Matthias Pintscher as well as the Ensemble intercontemporain (the ensemble associated with the academy), EXAUDI, the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and the company ORO-Loïc Touzé. In 2014, supported by today’s top artists, the academy focuses on vocal writing, on musical dramaturgy, and on the creation of live performances in the digital domain. EXAUDI is back again this year. The British singers join the Ensemble intercontemporain for the Composition Workshop for Two Voices and Conducted Ensemble led by Matthias Pintscher and George Benjamin. EXAUDI will take part in the In Vivo Danse Workshop alongside the choreographer Loïc Touzé, his company ORO and the composer Hèctor Parra. Georges Aperghis and selection of his faithful performers will lead the In Vivo Théâtre Musical Workshop focused on musical dramaturgy, while the electronic music artist Robert Henke imagines a work in terms of the venue where it will be projected—in this case the CENTQUATRE-Paris’ Nef during the In Vivo Electro Live Workshop. The academy benefits from its association with IRCAM’s rich festival, enabling students to take part in a series of events associated with their activity: analysis of their works by composers and guests, Cursus 2 premieres, conferences by artists, an open space where students can meet and organize casual activities, concerts and experimental creations, and presentations of the work carried out in IRCAM’s labs. Two and a half weeks of intense activity during that the public can discover the result of the students’ work. Four major partners are taking part in the organization of the academy: the Ensemble intercontemporain, the CENTQUATRE-Paris, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, and Les Spectacles vivants-Centre Pompidou. Starting in the summer of 2016, the German composer Wolfgang Rihm will assume overall artistic directorship of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY. The conductor and composer Matthias Pintscher will support him as Principal Conductor and will be responsible each summer for a central Academy program; he will additionally focus on developing the Academy Orchestra. Both contracts are for a period of five years. For twelve years the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY has been regarded as a unique international educational campus in the field of contemporary classical music of the 20th and 21st centuries. It offers continuing training not only for some 120 instrumentalists between 18 and 32 years of age but also for young directors and composers. “I am extremely delighted that in the person of Wolfgang Rihm a leading figure of contemporary music will be taking over artistic leadership of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY,” remarks Michael Haefliger, LUCERNE FESTIVAL’s Executive and Artistic Director. “On the strength of his experience and his knowledge in connection with the Academy, Wolfgang Rihm will be in a position to establish new directions for linking creativity with effective ways of working together for young instrumentalists, conductors, and composers.     PRESS RELEASE – for immediate release 72nd GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION Jaehyuck Choi wins 1st Prize at Geneva Competition – Composition 2017 Geneva, 28.11.2017 – Korean composer Jaehyuck Choi (23 years old) was awarded First Prize at the 72nd Geneva International Music Competition for his concerto for clarinet & orchestra: “Nocturne III”. Jury Chairman Matthias Pintscher praised the expressivity, colour, movement and emotion conveyed through the winning piece. Jaehyuck. Choi is currently a student at the Juilliard School in New York. He has won many composition awards in the United States and in Korea. Second Prize was attributed to Mr Yair Klartag (32 years old, Israel) for his piece “Bocca Chiusa”. The Audience Prize was awarded to Mr. Hankyeol Yoon (23 years old, Korea)., and the young Audience Prize was divided between Mr. Jaehyuck Choi & Mr. Hankyeol Yoon. This year, all three finalists were also commissioned to compose a work for violin solo, to be performed during the Menuhin Competition 2018, which will take place next spring in Geneva. Candidates had to submit a concerto for clarinet and orchestra. After the first round, which took place in June, the official Jury, chaired by world-famous composer Matthias Pintscher, selected 3 finalists amongst 67 applications received from around the world (26 countries, 55 men, 12 women, 16-30 years old) to pursue to the final round: Nocturne III for clarinet & orchestra by Mr. Jaehyuck Choi (22 years old, Korea) Bocca Chiusa for clarinet & orchestra by Mr. Yair Klartag (31 years old, Israel) Prank for clarinet & orchestra by Mr. Hankyeol Yoon (23 years old, Korea) Their compositions were performed as world premiere during a public final round on November 26th in Geneva, Switzerland, by soloists Fabio Di Càsola, Jérôme Comte and Ernesto Molinari and the Geneva Chamber Orchestra.

    HAN CHEN / PIANO Hailed by the New York Times as a pianist with "a graceful touch... rhythmic precision... hypnotic charm” and "sure, subtle touch," Han Chen is a distinctive artist whose credentials at a young age already include important prizes in competitions of traditional music as well as increasing respect in the avant- garde. Mr. Chen’s debut CD with Naxos Records, which consists of all-Liszt operatic transcriptions, was released in January 2016 as the first prize winner of the 6th China International Piano Competition. Gramophone complimented Mr. Chen’s “brilliant performance” in the CD as “impressively commanding and authoritative.” The website Classics Today also praised for his “assured, elegant and totally effortless technique” by scoring 10 out of 10 in both artistic quality and sound quality. International Piano magazine (UK) described Mr. Chen’s performance in the competition as “[Chen] displayed extraordinary strength, talent and flair.” His performances in the 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the 15th Arthur Rubinstein Piano Competition and the 2018 Honens International Piano Competition were also highly acclaimed. As a soloist, Mr. Chen has appeared with many orchestras, including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (under Maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy), Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, China Symphony Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, Juilliard Orchestra, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Xiamen National Orchestra, Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, Aspen Music Festival Brass Ensemble and Shanghai Conservatory Middle School Orchestra. Being an advocate for modern music, Mr. Chen actively performs music from the 20th and the 21st century.     Soundzz.z.zzz...z – Call for Artists Competition for an Artwork at the Intersection of Music and the Visual Arts 1. Competition For years LUCERNE FESTIVAL and Kunstmuseum Luzern have pursued various formats of partnering to- gether. Both institutions are interested in the connections and varied relationships that exist between the visual arts and music, between visual expression and sound. In 2015, LUCERNE FESTIVAL and Kunstmuse- um Luzern will inaugurate for the third time a project promoting the intersection and interface between both cultural areas, specifically by means of a competition. During the Summer Festival the potential of interdisciplinary projects will be displayed at Kunstmuseum Luzern to musical and visual arts audiences alike. Both institutions are very eager to explore new, unconventional projects that are full of promise and that are equally at home in the domain of the visual arts and of music and that moreover stand out in terms of quality. The competition is directed to young emerging artists (single artists, teams of two or three artists) to develop a project exploring the theme of «Humor» at the intersection of music and the visual arts. The project in question should be ephemeral, performative, actionistic. The project that is selected by a jury will be executed during the course of LUCERNE FESTIVAL in Summer (14 August – 13 September 2015) on the premises of Kunstmuseum Luzern. The project we are looking for should be neither an exhibition nor a concert. The form this project will take is open-ended: it can involve an intervention, an action, a perfor- mance, an event or happening in the sense of a performance, a concept to be developed during the course of the Festival, a series of performances, or another type of event.

    Performance, Subjectivity and Experimentation in Artistic Research An Interdisciplinary Seminar ORCiM Seminar 2016 February 24-25, 2016 Orpheus Institute, Ghent (Belgium) Introduction The arts of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have pushed us relentlessly to question inherited notions of the self, expression and communication: to ask ourselves, again and again, who we think we are and how we can speak meaningfully to one another. Increasing globalisation and the development of recording and photographic technologies, running alongside psychoanalytical critiques of selfhood and the impact of scientific principles of uncertainty, are often theorized as having prompted a crisis of identity, representation and authenticity. The discourse of post-humanism has demanded a reconsideration of the distinctions between human and non-human agency. At the same time, the throwaway playfulness of pop culture and digital manipulation offer endless possibilities for self- reinvention. In many fields of artistic practice and in related theoretical domains there persists an ongoing engagement with questions of subjectivity, but a subjectivity acknowledged as distributed, contingent, embodied and always in flux; often manifested as partial, unstable, provisional even, rather than identified as a singular self. Simultaneously, subjectivity, as an individuated ‘I’, continues to function, not least in musical practice and especially in performance training: here, notions of the authenticity and singularity of the performer’s ‘voice’ -- the uniqueness and distinctiveness of personal expression -- continue to be highly valued, despite the everyday experiencing of the fluidities, uncertainties, and fundamentally performative nature of selfhood. Within arts practice, a ‘performance turn’ has allowed for a stronger focus on the production and experiencing of subjectivity in the context of live events: as ephemeral, dynamic and contingent, resisting conceptualisation into a stabilised notion of an artwork.

    Michael Haefliger on Pierre Boulez <? echo $this->teaser; ?> What were the reasons behind your decision to appoint Pierre Boulez as Artistic Director of the Lucerne Festival Academy? Haefliger: The situation at the time was that we were holding masterclasses, but could see that they were not really generating any kind of momentum. When I became Executive Director, I knew that I wanted to set a clear signal with respect to modernism and the promotion of young artists. I spent some time thinking about who would be the right person for the job, and to be honest, only one person fitted the bill: Pierre Boulez. We got in touch with him and he agreed straight away, just like that, and we took everything else from there. It was an absolute stroke of luck, of course. How would you describe Boulez as a teacher? Haefliger: I have always experienced Pierre Boulez as Pierre Boulez himself, and not as a teacher or conductor, or as a composer in that sense. He has a universal personality that simply combines everything. He is very relaxed and natural, so you don’t get the feeling that he’s being a teacher. He has simply remained exceptionally true to himself, and he naturally has this incredible talent of being able to communicate knowledge without any fuss and bother, and with such determination because he is genuinely interested in the younger generation. Boulez is always clear, always transparent; that makes it relatively easy to work with him. He doesn’t take too long to make a decision; he’s a decisive person.

Wolfgang Rihm | Artistic Director Matthias Pintscher | Principal Conductor Pierre Boulez † | Honorary President www.lucernefestival.ch One guiding principle of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY is to foster the relationship among performers, conductors, and composers in order to enhance the performance of 20th- and 21st-century music. The Roche Young Commissions programme is a unique collaboration between Roche, LUCERNE FESTIVAL and the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY. Since 2003, Roche has worked with its partners to award regular commissions for new musical works by some of the world’s most important contemporary composers. A further expression of the partnership between Roche and LUCERNE FESTIVAL is the Roche Young Commissions. Every two years, alternating with the ongoing Roche Commissions programme, two young composers will be selected and commissioned to write orchestral works. Working closely with two young conductors, the Roche Young Commissions awardees will have two years to complete their compositions, which will premiere at the Lucerne Festival. Artistic Director Wolfgang Rihm will consult with the young composers in an advisory capacity at various stages of their work. At the end of the project’s first year and as part of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY 2018, fragments or sections of each new work will be studied and rehearsed with the Orchestra of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY. These rehearsals will give the composers a unique opportunity to try out different orchestrations and compositional variants with the Academy’s orchestra.
