Asian Elephants in Culture & Nature Behavioral Characteristics of Sri Lankan Elephants Jinadasa Katupotha1, Aravinda Ravibhanu Sumanarathna2 ABSTRACT Two species of elephants are traditionally recognized, the African elephant (Loxodontaafricana) and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). The Asian Elephant (also recognized as the Indian Elephant) is a large land animal (smaller than the African Elephant) that lives in India, Malaysia, Sumatra, and Sri Lanka. This elephant is used extensively for labor; very few are left in the wild. Their life span is about 70 years. Classification of animals shows that the Sri Lankan elephants belong to Kingdom Animalia (animals), Phylum Chordata, Class Mammallia (mammals), Order Proboscidea, Family Elephantidae, Genus Elephas, Species E. maximus. Herds of elephants live in tight matriarchal family groups consisting of related females. A herd is led by the oldest and often largest female in the herd, called a matriarch. A herd would consist of 6-100 individuals depending on territory, environment suitability and family size. Compared to other mammals, elephants show signs of grief, joy, anger and have fun. They are extremely intelligent animals and have memories that would span many years. It is this memory that serves matriarchs well during dry seasons when they need to guide their herds, sometimes for tens of miles to watering holes that they remember from the past. Mating Season of the elephants is mostly during the rainy season and the gestation period is 22 months. At birth a calf (twins rare) weighs between 90 - 110 kg. As a calf's trunk at birth has no muscle quality it suckles with its mouth. -

INTERPRETATION OF SOURCE MATERIAL FOR THE STUDY OF RELA TIONS BETWEEN SRI LANKA AND THAILAND PRIOR TO FOURTEENTH CENTURY* By M. Rohanadeera Department of History and Archaeology University of Sri Jayawardenepura, Sri Lanka. INTRODUCTION THE recorded history of Thailand begins with the founding of the first independent Thai Kingdom in Sukhothai, ill the late 13th century. Its history from 14th century .onwards, has been satisfactorily documented with the help of abundant source mater-ial, both. literary and archaeolo- gical. Hence we have at our disposal, a not so complicated picture of what happened in the political and cultural spheres of that land during the period from 14th century onwards, with fairly established chronology. As such history of contacts between Sri Lanka and Thailand. during that period could be arranged in chronological sequence and historians have done S0 to a satisfactory degree. But the study of the subject relating to the period prior to 14th century is quite different, for not only are the source material rare, sporadic and clouded with myths and legends, but also as mentioned earlier, the history of Thailand itself is yet to be documented satisfactorily. On the other hand Sri Lankan history of the corresponding period is relatively clearand comprehensively documented with established chrono- logy. This has been done with the help of the bulk of information furnished in literary and archaeological sources. So, our primary task is to discover relevant evidence.jf any; in whatever form, in the dark period-of Thai history and to identify their parallels in the clear picture of Sri Lankan history prior to 14th century. -

It originates from the central hills and flows through a diverse array of landscapes, including some of the most urbanized regions and intensive land uses. Kelani River suffers a multitude of environmental issues: illegal water diversions and extractions, impoundment for hydroelectricity generation, and pollution, mostly from agrochemicals, urban runoff, industrial discharges, and domestic waste. Moreover, loss of riparian forest cover, sand-mining, and unplanned development in floodplains have accentuated the environmental damage. In this study, based on Kelani River basin, we reviewed the status of biodiversity, threats encountered, conservation challenges, and provided guidance for science-based conservation planning. Kelani River basin is high in biodiversity and endemism, which includes 60 freshwater fish species of which 30 are endemic. -

Impact of culture on Parliamentary Library of Sri Lanka Cultural Foundation The Word culture taken in its general sense, represents human civilization. Encyclopaedia Britannica identifies culture as the integrated pattern of human knowledge. belief and behaviouri. This definition seems to be too wide to be treated in a paper aimed at a limited purpose. I feel therefore that it would be pertinent to narrow the meaning of the word to a particular nation, its language, religion and heritage. Culture of Sri Lanka in its present context is composite, complex and cosmopolitan. The apparent reason for this perhaps is its being an island located in the India Ocean, along the ancient Silk Route from East to the \Vest, in close proximity to the Indian Subcontinent. Beginning and the thriving of the Sri Lankan culture was illustrated in early Chronicles written in about 5th centwy AD. The most fan1ous of these chronicles is the Mahawansa. According to that the Sinhala community was founded by innnigrants from North India in 5th Centwy B.C. It says that they were a highly cultured people who built and lived in cities with the help of an advanced system of administrntion. Introduction of Buddhism, which is the religion of the majority even today, in 306 BC added a new aspect to their culture. Giant irrigation works sustaining a elaborated system of agriculture, vast religious and social monuments, and an ancient Aryan language with a very considerable literature in the form of rock and other inscriptions and Ola leaf books are what the country has inhabited from them.
