THE AND ITS FUTURE SCENARIOS

The thematic meeting of the EESC Employers' Group “European Union and its future scenarios” aims at debating some key questions about the future of the European Union: • Are there any other options to ? • Are there alternative ways to ensure peace, democracy and prosperity in Europe? • Where are the geographic, political and cultural frontiers of the European Union? • Would further European integration necessarily lead to an erosion of the sovereignty of national states? • Does the European Union need a monetary union? • What would be the potential consequences of a “two‐speed" or even a "multi‐speed Europe”? • The European Union and its neighbours: Ukraine, Russia and .

The objective is to have an open and frank debate on very sensitive and political issues which are not often tackled by EU institutions. The discussion will be moderated by Ms Sylvie Kaufmann, journalist and Editorial Director (French newspaper “Le Monde”).

This event is part of the European Forum for New Ideas, the International Forum held in Sopot and organised by Polish Confederation of Private Employers “Lewiatan”.

The meeting will be held in Sopot at the Sheraton Hotel (Sopot, 10, Powstancow Warszawy, Sopot 81‐718) from 11.00 to 12.15 and will be followed by a lunch debate.

Jacek Krawczyk Vice-President, European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), Poland

EESC Vice President responsible for Budget since 2010. Is a Member of the Employers Group where he represents the Polish Confederation of Private Employers Lewiatan. He is a lawyer, graduate from the Warsaw University in 1989, and also a graduate from the HEC in Paris. He started his professional carrier in 1988 and became over the years involved with several banks and companies as the board member or CEO.

George Friedman Chief Executive Officer, Stratfor, USA

Chief Executive Officer of STRATFOR, a company he founded in 1996 that is now a leader in the field of global intelligence. Dr. Friedman is the author of the New York Times best sellers The Next 100 Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century and The Next Decade as well as other books on warfare and intelligence. He received his bachelor’s degree from the City College of the City University of New York and holds a Ph.D. in government from Cornell University.

Nadia Arbatova Head of Department of European Political Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia

Head of Department of European Political Studies Institute for World Economy and International Relations, Russian Academy of Sciences, holds a PhD in Political Sciences. She is also Director of the Foundation for European Integration (NGO), Director of the Discussion Forum “European Dialogues”, a member of Council on Foreign and Defense Policy and author of numerous publications on the EU-Russia relations, European security and Russia’s foreign policy.

Bahadir Kaleagasi International Coordinator of TUSIAD and President of the Bosphorus Institute, Turkey

International Coordinator of TUSIAD, President of the Bosphorus Institute, founding President of the Turkish environmental organisation TEMA’s European branch. His expertise covers the theories of international relations, EU’s decision-making system, EU-US relations and the external economic relations of the EU. Bahadir Kaleagasi has several publications on the international and European questions, his latest book is on the G20 Planet.

Henri Malosse President, Employers’ Group, European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), France

Before becoming President of the Employers Group of the EESC, Henri Malosse was President of the EESC’s SOC and ECO sections, and Co-President of the EU-Bulgaria Joint Committee, as well as member of the EESC Bureau. He is currently the director and advisor to the Presidency of the French Assembly of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, advisor to the President on European matters and Vice President and founding member of the European Association of SME.

Aleksander Smolar Chairman of the Board, Stefan Batory Foundation, Poland

Political scientist. Chairman of the Board of Stefan Batory Foundation. Co-founder and Member of the Board of the European Council on Foreign Relations. Between 1973 and 2007 - Research Fellow in the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris – political advisor to Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki and foreign policy advisor to Prime Minister Hanna Suchocka. The last book: Taboo and Innocence (2010).

Adam D. Rotfeld Co-Chairman of the Polish-Russian Group on Difficult Matters, Poland

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Co-Chairman of the Polish-Russian Group on Difficult Matters and Commissioner of the Euro-Atlantic Security Initiative Commission. Served as a member of the UN SG’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters (chaired the ABDM in 2008) and the NATO ‘Wisemen Group’ on new Strategic Concept of Alliance (2009-2010). Professor at Warsaw University.

Sylvie Kauffmann Editorial Director, Le Monde, France

Editorial Director of the French newspaper Le Monde. She was the Editor-in-Chief in 2010-2011. Prior to that she mostly worked as a foreign correspondent, in Moscow (1986-1988), Eastern and Central Europe (1988-1993), United States (1993-2001), South-East Asia (2006-2009). From 2002 to 2004, based in Paris, she headed the in- depth reporting section of Le Monde and then was appointed Deputy Editor in 2004.
