It was rebuilt by John Roebling, who had just won national acclaim as the designer of the railway bridge over Niagara Falls. This bridge became an important troop crossing during the American Civil War. - see the story on page 6128.

Service celebrating the life of Paul Montagu Samuels was held on 29 June, 2012 at Lavender Bay Sydney. It was attended by Anearly 200 of Paul’s family, friends, colleagues, fellow motoring enthusiasts and business associates. Many of them met later to further reminisce about him after the burial. Paul Samuels will be remembered for many things, but all Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club members should be aware that it was he who fi rst thought of forming our club, and then organized a group of owners to make it happen. Fittingly, he holds RROCA car badge No 1. The full story of our club’s formation is told in David Neely’s book ‘In the Rear View Mirror’, available from the Sir Henry Royce Foundation, and this makes interesting reading. Paul called together the inaugural gathering of 19, (fi ve present by proxy). It was held in the sumptuous Sydney offi ce of Des Collings-Power, with Sep Hall as Chairman, on 20 June, 1956. Paul Samuels was appointed Secretary, Terry Hunt Treasurer, Des Collings-Power and Barrie Gillings Committee Members and Sue Kemp Vehicle Registrar. The proceedings were recorded and typed for distribution by Fleur Robinson. Of the four ladies present, Sue Kemp was already married to Kevon, and later, Jane Fry married John Nevell, Margaret Tingle married Barrie Gillings and Fleur Robinson married Paul Samuels. Margaret and Barrie Gillings and Fleur Samuels attended the funeral, along with many RROC (NSW) members. The other surviving founder members are Des Collings-Power, Terry Hunt, John Nevell and perhaps Sue Kemp. As well as the Needless to say, the extravagant claims contained in the Eastern States of Australia, we have taken her to and brochures were not fulfi lled. The originally anticipated “100 (twice), to China (twice) and to New Zealand (also cars” turned out in reality to be just four independent entrants twice), to South Africa and Swaziland, and last year to the (together with a few sundry vehicles of the “Organiser” and Canadian Rockies, and the U.S. National Parks, Yellowstone, of the “Australian Representative”). No permits to drive the etc., this year to Kentucky for the Louisville R.R.O.C. National vehicles were ever obtained (and someone told us they were Meet, and later this year on the Silver Ghost Association Tour not even applied for!), and we were only able to drive our car of Eastern Canada, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Next some 500-metres from a car-park to the so-called “start” of year we hope to take her to England, and then on the 100th. below: 2133 in the driveway of the home in Reno, Nevada, Anniversary of the Austrian Alpine Trials. of Tom Batchelor, well known restorer and collector. In October she also celebrates her own 100th Birthday! For many years Tom ran the restoration shop for the famous And still going strong! We plan to bring her home later next Harrah Collection, now part of the American National Automobile year for the Silver Ghost Tour of Tasmania and South Eastern Museum Australia in February/March 2014. After the wonderful time we had last year at the Lake Tahoe R.R.O.C. National Meet and at the Pebble Beach Concours in August, we decided to send her to Shanghai for the so-called “China Classic Auto Rally”, described as a “3,880 kms., 16-days, structured, carefully planned tour route”, “fully supported and endorsed by Chinese Government”, with “all the Chinese Government paperwork in place”, and “all paperwork and logistics...taken care of”. The glossy brochures made many similar glamorous assertions. However, the reality was quite different! According to the initial brochure the “Rally” was conceived by a Chinese and New Zealand real estate businessman who was to be joined by the Australian

6128 PRÆCLARVM 4-12 the Rally, around a private road and then straight back into the car-park! The cars were then left on public display (and we understand that members of the public were charged to view them), then loaded back onto trucks! That was the last we saw of our car until this year. We were, however, fortunate; after a couple of months we eventually got our car back to America (but only after paying additional charges of some US$5,000 including mysterious and unexplained “facility fees”). The other three entrants took much longer to have their cars returned, with the Swiss entry only getting his Mercedes back in May, with enormous bond and other charges to be paid. All promises by the “Organiser” and by the “Australian Representative” to provide refunds have come to nothing, nor are e-mails and phone calls properly responded to, or even at all! So, a word of warning when shipping cars overseas! Be cautious, and do not take the statements or promises of “organisers” or “representatives” at face value! After that debacle, we had the Ghost shipped to Steve Littin, a Kiwi now resident in Ohio and acknowledged as the “world guru” on these wonderful old cars, to have it checked over, and an overdrive unit fi tted on the tailshaft. We collected the car from Steve’s very impressive workshop in Cleveland in mid- June, and drove to Pittsburgh to join an outing of the Classic Car Club of America at the Frick House Museum, arranged by good friends Lee and Pam Wolff, fellow Ghost owners, and well known to many Australian members. Henry Clay Frick became the world’s largest steel producer, and his Fifth Avenue mansion in Manhattan is a fascinating art museum and a great legacy to his philanthropy. In the Pittsburgh car museum attached to the main house is his 1914 Silver Ghost #24RB (surely the world’s lowest mileage, one owner, Silver above: Powhatan Point, Ohio. U.S. War of Independence. Over 180 years later, in June 1952, at the local airport, Dwight D. Eisenhower greeted Richard M. Nixon with the famous words “You’re my Boy !” They were both elected in the landslide Presidential victory in September that year, some sixty years ago. From Pennsylvania we headed south into West Virginia, and spent the night at Wheeling (remember the Neil Sedaka hit of the seventies?) on the banks of the mighty Ohio River, and celebrated their annual “West Virginia State Day”. Wheeling, a former state capital, must once have been a beautiful town, but since the mine and other industry closures of the seventies and eighties, it is like much of America’s former industrial heartland, full of once grand homes and commercial buildings, many now boarded-up, burnt out, or literally falling down due to decay and neglect. From Wheeling we followed the banks of the Ohio for many hundreds of miles, through beautiful countryside interspersed with the leftovers of industry and power production, and spent the next day at Huntington, a pleasant mid-size U.S. town, obviously more dependent on agriculture and primary production, and so not exhibiting the same ravages of poverty common to many southern rural towns. Marie noted that this was where English celebrity chef Jamie Oliver had recently, and controversially, persuaded the local authorities to introduce a healthier dietary regime above left: Marie (l) with Bill Davis (R) of West Virginia, well known RROC Life member, and collector, with his magnifi cent 1933 Phantom II Barker tourer #4PY which he has owned for almost 50-years. PRÆCLARVM 4-12 6129 here that we had our only “blowout”! It was the usual problem of the bead tearing on the tyre. This was fairly dramatic, with the complete tyre and tube coming off the rim and rolling down the road! However, before I had even returned to the Ghost after retrieving it, a very helpful Kentucky State Highway Breakdown Truck had pulled over, and with the use of his modern trolley jack we were on our way in no time. A wonderful, free service provided by the state whereby their repair vehicles constantly patrol the main roads offering complimentary roadside assistance. We took our time, visiting Lexington again, the “horse capital”, and then to the pretty state capital Frankfort (whose permanent population of about 30,000 swells to around 200,000 during the week when the public servants return to work!), and is home to many of the Kentucky Bourbon Distilleries. Then to nearby historic Georgetown, below:”The Belle of Louisville” . The oldest operating Mississippi River-style Steamboat in the world. With their 1923 Barker Tourer #29LK. Doug and Mary are well-known to many Australians, and were in Canberra for our Federal Rally last year. Mary is the editor of the “Silver Ghost Tourer” magazine in schools following the publication of the town as having the “fattest population” in the country! America is a relatively inexpensive country for Australians to visit with most items being substantially cheaper than in Australia, including accommodation, food and liquor. One night we ate at a pleasant steak house restaurant, and were surprised when reading the bill to see that Martinis and Bloody Mary cocktails were only $2.50 each! So we ordered another one! That day we had our only “mechanical breakdown” with the “after-market” alternator apparently not charging. I was not concerned, as I thought I would just run on the magneto. After a few hours, however, I was surprised when the car “failed to proceed”. After some diagnosis we worked out that as the battery was completely fl at, the electric fuel-pumps (again, after-market!) were not able to operate. So we reverted to using the original pressurised pumps (why, you ask, was I not using them anyway?) and magneto, and all was fi ne. It was a salient lesson; the problems we have with these old cars most frequently relates to “improvements” or changes that we have made to Henry Royce’s originals! We then headed into the beautiful Kentucky Blue Grass Country, past amazing horse studs and equestrian centres and grand mansions, quite a contrast to the homes we had seen during the past few days. It was

Louisville is an attractive city, just across the river from Indiana, and with a population of about 800,000 it is the largest city in the State, and home to the annual Kentucky Derby. We have visited there before, as Marie’s daughter Kari is married to a U.S. Army offi cer, currently stationed in nearby Fort Knox (although the rumour is that all the gold is now in China!). It is always enjoyable on the fi rst day arriving at a large car event, with the excitement of seeing new and interesting cars and renewing old friendships. This was no exception, and with excellent underground parking and security it was fascinating to walk around and see many different models we rarely see in our country. There were approximately 300 cars registered for the event, ranging in age from our Ghost (the oldest out of nine Ghosts in mid-western states, and also a relatively low proportion of attendance), right through to the latest Series II Phantom, older cars (18.3% of the cars attending were pre-war), with which I was fortunate to drive. It’s new 8-speed gearbox gives many attendees opting to drive a long distance in a more a really smooth transition through the changes, although not comfortable modern vehicle. The main downside is the climate, with very hot temperatures and high humidity. Accordingly, the Concours day was held indoors! Almost 300 cars in a huge air-conditioned auditorium! Certainly not as glamorous as a picnic on the lawn under a tree overlooking the water (as was one memorable event in the 1990s at Newport, Rhode Island, held in the grounds of Jacqueline Kennedy’s family home), but much more practical in 100-degree heat!

PRÆCLARVM 4-12 6139 History in a Caption, # 4

Many interesting photos have been collected by the authors of Rolls-Royce and Bentley in the Sunburnt Country since it was published in 1999. Most are now in the book's supplement to be found on the Foundation's website. However, those images are of a lower quality so as to make them load more quickly on the website. Moreover, each photo often has a bigger story to tell. In this new series, History in a Caption, the authors will take turns to select interesting photos and explain them. If you have early photographs to share please send them in.

6140 PRÆCLARVM 4-12 Meet the New Federal President and Treasurer Kim Stapleton - Federal President I purchased my Silver Shadow SRH26587 in August 1987 (just before the stock market crash of that year) and at the urging of Ian Dunn (ACT) I joined the Club in 1988. Having enjoyed the delights of our Club for a few years I decided to lend a hand so in 1990 I joined the Events team and so began my involvement on the Branch committee. I have held positions as Events Captain, Federal Delegate, Vice President and President for the NSW Branch. In the Federal sphere I have been Federal Secretary and for the last twelve or so years Federal Registrar of Judges. I believe that it is all too easy to get caught up in the political humdrum of life and neglect what is core to our Club and members. We are a car club and we need to be more focussed on the Objects of our constitutions and our members’ needs. Many of our members are directly affected by the fi nancial mayhem that is currently impacting the globe. I would like to see our Club actively seeking to deliver value for money events and activities to our members. I am also very keen to see as many of our members’ cars, particularly the older ones, out and being driven at the various events organised around the country.

Peter Chan - Federal Treasurer Peter advises that the nearest he got to buying a Silver Shadow or any other Rolls-Royce was during a wander down York Street in Sydney when he actually went into the old agents and enquired. At the time he was living in Darwin and it did occur to him that having to drive a brand new car to croc country was not something he pined for. Some years ago he agreed to house and feed one of our more destitute members who brought with him a Bentley in pieces and various other chassis. These he keeps well clear off except when pressed into brake bleeding, turning things on and off and lending some extra muscle to loosen a tight fastener! In the meantime Peter has established, organized and run a number of companies in our Eastern seaboard capitals as well as in our National Capital. His passion is fi nancial management and balancing the requirements of State and Federal jurisdictions against earning suffi cient returns to maintain life and limb! He has taken on the Federal offi ce noting that they are in an excellent state, audited and complete. His predecessor John Hiscock, Peter says has been of great help in the handover and that the Club has been fortunate to have enjoyed his unstinting service for over six years.

I didn't know that!

e all know the 'Magic of a name', that pioneering book of Rolls-Royce Whistory by Harold Nockolds, published for Rolls-Royce Ltd. in 1938 and reissued in 1945 - there were also many subsequent reprints. But did you know that the magical title came from the poem Pleasures of Hope by the Scottish poet Thomas Campbell (1777-1844)? I didn't, but then I didn't know that Warren Allport's book in 1963, 'Rolls-Royce: the power of grace', used the same source. Neither of these books, nor Peter Pugh's much later and monumental volumes, The Magic of a Name, Part 1, 2 & 3 published in 2000 for Rolls-Royce Ltd., mentioned the Thomas Campbell source. We can give him his due now. Tom Clarke (WA)
