No 5376 www.scottishcatholicobserver.org.uk Friday August 6 2010 | 90p BBC strike threatens Papal blackout Television coverage in doubt as corporation staff will vote on industrial action on September 9

By Ian Dunn FEARS are growing that strike action at the BBC could prevent Scottish Catholics from watching the Papal visit live on television. The National Union of Journalists, Bectu, Unite, Equity and the Musicians Union are balloting members on strike action over the corporation’s plans to cut £50 million from staff’s pension funds. The result of the ballot is expected on September 9, just a week before Pope Benedict XVI arrives in to begin his four-day state visit. Strike repercussions If a strike goes ahead it could stop hundreds of thousands of Scots Catholics from following the Pope’s visit, which begins with his meeting with the Queen at Holyrood Palace, and could also affect transmission to the rest of the UK and overseas. Although it is anticipated that half of Catholics in Scotland will attend the parade to welcome the Pope in Edinburgh or go to the Papal Mass in , some parishes had planned to watch the Mass live together on television. David Kerr, a spokesman for the in Scotland and former BBC journalist, said he hoped the BBC strike would not go ahead. “We’ll just have to keep a watching brief on this one,” he told the SCO. “As I know from my time at the BBC, rumours of strike action are not always followed by strike action itself. “I also know that the union leaders at the BBC are good and sensible people. So, hopefully, strike action won’t affect the corporation’s coverage of the Papal visit.” In and , the majority of Catholics will have to rely on television coverage to follow Papal events as demand is outstripping availability for parts of the itinerary, including the Cardinal John Henry Newman Beatification Mass at Cofton Park, Birmingham. He shares some of his thoughts of his first pilgrimage to the town in the south of France famous for the Marian apparitions and reflects on what was a ‘truly memorable experience’

AKING my first pilgrimage to Lourdes as part of the 1 annual GlasgowM Archdiocesan group was a truly memorable experi- ence; from the minute our plane left Edinburgh Airport and touched down there again seven days later. Flying is always an interest- ing experience but looking down from on high presents an obvious difficulty—there is no sign of life below. We may feel closer to God because we are higher up or when the plane hits turbulence but there is a sense of being far away from signs of life below and other people on earth. Lourdes draws people closer together again in Faith. I would spend most of my time around the basilica, grotto and even found time to visit the baths—all within five minutes of my hotel, St George. The theme for 2010 in Lourdes is with Bernadette, we make the Sign of the Cross. After becoming a nun, Bernadette was asked by one of her sisters: “What must one do to be sure to go to Heaven?” Without hesitating, Bernadette said: “Make the Sign of the Cross well. That in itself is already a great deal.” A few moments before her 2 3 death, Bernadette called on her remaining strength and made her last Sign of the Cross.

he strength of Faith in Lourdes is obvious and Tabundant. This is not just a place where the Faithful seek healing, pardon and peace. Its clear Marian focus and devotion characteristically seeks to draw pilgrims to Her son Jesus Christ the one who heals, brings for- giveness and grants us peace. The message of Lourdes is a simple one that brings no new revelation or teachings. It calls us back to the Good News of Jesus and can be summarised in four points: Poverty, prayer, penance and participation. I visited the Cenacolo Community near Bartres. Founded by Sr Elvira Petrozzi to help people with addiction prob- lems, this community has at its 4 core the four points mentioned and I was delighted to hear a member of the community inform me that its rehabilitation success rate is 90 per cent, ‘prayer really works,’ he told me. Our pilgrimage consisted of Archbishop Mario Conti, 12 priests, 57 sick, three doctors, 56 hospitalite, 71 from the St Margaret Youth Group of Scotland, 43 from St Aloysius College and 150 other pilgrims. To see so many volunteers, particularly the young, giving their time to meet the needs of others, is a tribute to their good will and generosity. Our weekly series on children’s liturgy has word lesson plans for use with young people who are on the path to Christ Each week, catechists will find readings and Psalm responses, complemented by prayer, reflection, FAITH discussion questions, and activities. Please feel free to use them as you wish The lessons are created by Adorer-theologians using the lens of the spirituality of St Maria de Mattias, which also embraces precious blood spirituality FIRST While this is the starting point for the lessons, readers are invited to approach them however the spirit moves you The Church is concerned with the availability and understanding of scripture for children who have their rightful place in the Church. In light of this SCO aims to provide a useful tool in drawing children closer to KIDS the Catholic Faith
