HEN the seminary in Bearsden closed in 2009, The Herald daily newspaper ran a piece that stated that centuriesW of tradition were coming to an end as Scotland’s last seminary was going to close. This statement was wrong on two counts: Scotland still has one functioning seminary, and the clo- sure of Bearsden ended a mere 292 years of history of seminary training inside Scotland, a trifle when contrasted with the 1600 years that the Church has been present in this land. In some respects the focus has shifted firmly back to the roots of our Church, to Rome. It is here that Scots seminarians now go to study for the priesthood, as they have done ever since 1600. They make their way to the Pontifical Scots College in Rome. One can, therefore, argue that the clo- sure of Bearsden constituted a return to normality. The links between Scotland and Rome are long-standing, indeed. It was as part of the Roman Empire that southern Scotland first received the Good News, and it was in Rome that that shadowy first Saint of our Country, Ninian, was ordained. Come to think of it, it was probably there that he was taught as a priest. Later, it was from Rome that the missionaries came who evangelised the south-east, and it was from Rome that the cultural accou- trements of the Faith travelled to Scot- land. Whilst it is true that the Papacy was not always as formidable as during the Pontificates of giants such as St Gre- gory the Great (540-604) or Innocent III (1160-1216), when Rome was the undisputed head of the Church, there was no period between the fourth cen- tury and 1560 when Scotland’s Chris- tians did not recognise the Bishop of Rome as their head. Gospel Stay awake! You never know when the Lord will come. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark 13:33: 3-7 Jesus said to His disciples: “Watch out and be ready! You don’t know when the time will come. It is like what happens when a man goes away for a while and places his servants in charge of everything. He tells each of them what to do,and He orders the watch men to be on their guard. “So be on your guard! You don’t know when the master of the house will come back. It could be in the evening or at midnight or before dawn or in the morning. But if he come suddenly, don’t let him find you asleep. I tell everyone just what I have told you. Be on your guard!” The Gospel of the Lord. 24 CELEBRATING LIFE SUPPORT YOUR NATIONAL CATHOLIC NEWSPAPER SCOTTISH CATHOLIC OBSERVER Friday November 18 2011
