AIMS 6TH ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL REPORT CARD (RC6) Nova Scotia High Schools Two years ago, a ruling by Nova Scotia’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Review Officer confirmed that the release of student achievement data was in the public interest. However, AIMS is still not able to report locally assigned exam grades or attendance in Nova Scotia schools, as some boards are still not able to access this information or simply refuse to do so. Following the closing of Queen Elizabeth High School in Halifax, last year’s top ranked school, we were assured a new school at the top of the rankings. Cape Breton Highlands Academy in Terre Noire jumped from third place in RC5 to take over the number one spot in the province, maintaining an ‘A-’ grade. Cape Breton Highlands was the only school in Nova Scotia to achieve an ‘A’ grade, with Charles P. Allen in Bedford also maintaining its ‘B+’ grade from last year to claim second spot in the rankings. Dalbrae Academy in Southwest Mabou saw its grade drop from an ‘A-’ to a ‘B+’ but still finished third overall. Several schools saw improvements of two grade levels. Rankin School of the Narrows and Pictou Academy-Dr. T. McCulloch School both improved from a ‘C+’ to a ‘B’ and finished eighth and ninth overall, respectively. Canso Academy (‘C’ to ‘B-’) and Annapolis West Education Centre (‘C’ to ‘B-’) also improved by two grade levels. Springhill Junior-Senior High School was the only school to see its grade decline more than two levels, falling from a ‘B-’ to a ‘C-’. -

It was prepared as part of the Advice Seeking Networks in Long Term Care project (2014-2017), Atlantic Canada site, to assist with the analysis and interpretation of findings from the surveys and interviews with seniors leaders in the long term care sectors in these respective provinces. Information on the long term care systems reflects the situation as of 2014-15, the time of the study’s data collection. Background The formal structure of Canada’s long term care sector is complex and varies across provinces and territories. This is largely attributed to the lack of federal jurisdiction for this care setting, unlike care provided in a hospital or other acute care setting. This document speaks to the landscape of residential long-term care in Canada’s Maritime provinces and factors that may contribute to the organization and advice-seeking behavior within the respective provincial long- term care systems. Located on the eastern coast of Canada, the Maritimes consist of three provinces: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. While the Maritime provinces are often considered as a collective entity, the organization and delivery of long-care term services falls under provincial jurisdiction, leading to differences across each system. -

Prince Edward Island Population – 140,402 Total Area – 5,684 km2 Population Density – 24.7 people/km2 Capital (Population) – Charlottetown (58,625) Number of K-12 Schools – 64 (2007-08) Number of K-12 Students – 20,813 (2007-08) Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in Canada, joined to the mainland portion of the country by the Confederation Bridge (a 13 km long span from Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island to Cape Jourimain, New Brunswick). K-12 Online Learning Category Yes/No Comments Province-led programme Yes Video conferencing Other online programmes Yes Programmes from other provinces Provincial-level policy Yes Online Programmes Prince Edward Island does have a video conferencing system that is available for use for distance education, although it appears that this system receives little use for this purpose. In addition to the provincial video conferencing system, students in Prince Edward Island have the ability to access some online courses offered by the New Brunswick Ministry of Education. During the 2009-10 school year there were 11 french-language students and 23 English-language students enroled in eight online courses. Governance and Regulation There is no mention of distance education in the provincial Schools Act. However, in 2001 the Ministry of Education issued Ministerial Directive No. MD 2001-05 establishing guidelines for the use of distance education within the K-12 system. These provisions were superceded in August 2008 by Ministerial Directive No. MD 2008-05, which applies only to courses delivered during the regular school day, broadly defines distance education, and outlines a series of beliefs about the nature of distance education instruction. -

Province of Nova Scotia Department of Finance MECHANISMS FOR ENHANCING THE RETIREMENT INCOME SYSTEM IN CANADA The Government of Nova Scotia is working with other provinces and territories, and the Government of Canada, to consider opportunities for enhancing Canada’s retirement income system. The overall goal is to increase savings from employment income of individuals (i.e. future retirees) who are not currently saving enough to obtain sufficient levels of replacement income to maintain their standard of living in retirement. Finance Ministers have been informed by comprehensive research as well as proposals and comments submitted by numerous interest groups and individuals. They acknowledged the importance of financial literacy and the central role that the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) plays in our government supported retirement income system. Most Ministers have agreed to consider a modest, phased-in, and fully-funded enhancement to the CPP in order to increase coverage and adequacy. Ministers further agreed to continue to work on pension innovations that would allow financial institutions to offer broad based defined contribution pension plans to multiple employers, all employees, and to the self-employed. Results of further work on technical and implementation issues will be presented at the late Fall 2010 meeting. -

Self-isolation requirements in Nova Scotia Revised September 8, 2021 DOMESTIC TRAVELERS Self-isolation requirements are based on vaccination status and testing for anyone traveling from Canadian provinces and territories outside Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. This includes Nova Scotia residents returning to the province. Isolation requirements are as follows: • People who are fully vaccinated do not have to self-isolate but testing is still recommended. • People who are not fully vaccinated must self-isolate for at least 7 days and cannot leave isolation until they get 2 negative tests results. Fully vaccinated means you had two doses of a World Health Organization approved vaccine (or 1 dose of Janssen) at least 14 days before arriving in Nova Scotia. If you received your second dose of vaccine less than 14 days before arriving in Nova Scotia, it does not count toward your vaccination status. Children 18 and younger must follow the isolation requirements for the least vaccinated adult they are traveling with. If the child is more vaccinated than the adult they are traveling with, they should isolate based on their own vaccination status. Children 16 and older can have their own form using the vaccination information of the least vaccinated adult they are traveling with. Younger children should be included on the same form of the least vaccinated adult they are traveling with. Testing for the purposes of ending isolation earlier than 14 days must be done in Nova Scotia, not in advance of arrival. It cannot be a rapid test. It must be a standard PCR lab test which usually takes up to 72 hours to get results. -
