I’m walking down Albany, towards Plasnewydd Road in central . This is where madeinroath have their HQ. It’s behind the ROADBLOCK. It’s full of sun and street stalls, food and art, alive with people. Why is this place called Roath, or Albany for that matter? Roath, with its claims to pre-Roman origin is the name the city of could have had if it had played its cards right. Albany Road was once Merthyr Road, renamed in 1884 to mark the death of Queen Victoria’s eighth son, Prince Leopold, the Duke of Albany. Local objections were overruled.

Roath, on the other hand has always been Roath. Except when it was Raz or Rath or Ratostathibios, of course. Rath means fort - here was one where is now and another, maybe, on that slowly rising mound of earth where St Margaret’s Church stands today.

Roath is the city’s new cultural epicentre, snatching the crown clean and easy from arty Pontcanna. Round here we have more eateries, coffee shops and watering holes than the entire of Canton. When madeinroath first began in 2009, galleries, open studios, strolling players, poets, peddlers, Roath had three galleries - today it has eight. Count them: street food sellers, commissioned creatives, concerts, g39, Albany, SHO, Oriel Makers, Cardiff MADE, Inkspot, performances, platforms, innovations, interventions, Waterloo Gardens and The Gate. When you’ve got that installations, improvisations, broadcasts, publications, much creativity bubbling then you need to celebrate. dances and diving, multi-cultural workshops, films and touring vans, knitting, cooking, brass bands, guitars, digital And madeinroath does just that. It’s run today by three doodling, the Actual Museum of Roath as well as Roath’s artists, Gail Howard, Helen Clifford and Becca Thomas. painterly finest. A highlight of this year’s festival will be ROADBLOCK – our bubbling hub of community creativity located on a suburban street. Come and find us on Plasnewydd Road, which will be festooned with banners and bunting, and overtaken by stages, stalls, tables and tents – with the fun spilling out across the whole of Albany Road and beyond.

The whole of the day will be filled with theatre, music, dancing, art, sharing and learning. Children and adults alike can join in skill sharing workshops, spin painting or clay pot throwing. You can find out things you never knew about Roath with the Local History Society, learn about nature in Roath from the RSPB, or about living sustainably from Roath FEAST. This isn’t your usual street festival, indeed, all activities are free and run by people from across our wonderful, diverse and creative community. Whatever your age, you’ll find something for you!

Maybe you’ll want to meet up with neighbours over a coffee at one of the refreshment stalls to watch performances or a song from our stage of local talented young musicians. Perhaps you’ll watch some budding artists creating mini masterpieces at the easels dotted around or the new green fingers being nurtured at our seedling giveaway. You’re welcome to take part in as much as you want, try something new, or simply come along, browse and enjoy the day.

We believe in supporting local business, and we are thrilled to have along the Poojas Sweets & Savouries stall, D’vinyl Records, and pop up cafes from regulars Kitsch Kitchen and the MADE cafe.

Pop along to the madeinroath information stall, where you can find out about all that’s going on over the festival weekend – where to go next, what to see and do, and how you can become involved in the festival. You’ll probably end up making your own unique badge to take away too…

ROADBLOCK is our party, a day when we gather together to reveal and celebrate the generosity, talent and creativity of our community! We hope to see you there – it wouldn’t be the same without you!
