In an attempt to remain proactive and not reactive, Start Smart is designed to help young drivers and their parents/guardians understand the responsibilities associated with driving a motor vehicle. Start Smart will show how a poor choice behind the wheel can change the lives of everyone involved. Our goal is to raise awareness and reduce the number of teen-related injuries and deaths due to collisions. Interested parents are asked to call Sergeant Renee Ferguson at 805-388-5132 for more information and for reservations call the Camarillo Police Department Community Resource Unit at 805-388-5155 to make a reservation. Space is limited to 20 students and their parents. There is no charge to attend the program.     1.0 PURPOSE AND NEED 1.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter describes the purpose of and need for conventional rail improvements on California’s existing Coast Corridor rail alignment, with a focus on the portion between Salinas and San Luis Obispo intended to enable expanded passenger rail service on the entire Coast Corridor (from San Francisco to Los Angeles). Figure 1-1 shows the entire length of the 470-mile-long Coast Corridor rail line. The Coast Corridor rail line consists of three segments: . Northern Segment - 77 miles from San Francisco to Gilroy, also known as the Caltrain Corridor . Middle Segment - 171 miles from Gilroy to San Luis Obispo - inclusive of the entirety of the project area considered in this document (Salinas - San Luis Obispo) . Southern Segment - 222 miles from San Luis Obispo to Los Angeles. Corresponds to the northern half of the Pacific Surfliner Corridor, also known as the LOSSAN Corridor1 The entire Coast Corridor spans eight counties: Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, San Benito, Monterey, Santa Clara, San Mateo, and San Francisco. The Coast Corridor serves as a transportation link between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. This corridor is also served by air and highway systems.     STAFF REPORT SUBJECT: Update on Measure A Projects MEETING DATE: June 25, 2012 AGENDA ITEM: 6 STAFF CONTACT: Jim Kemp, Steve VanDenburgh, Gregg Hart, Fred Luna, Sarkes Khachek & Scott Spaulding RECOMMENDATION: Receive a presentation on the current status of Measure A Regional Projects for both North County and South Coast. DISCUSSION: US 101 Widening: Phase 1 – US 101 widening from Milpas St. to the Hot Springs/Cabrillo: Work on this project, which included reconstruction of several bridges, local improvements and added a third lane northbound and southbound on Highway 101 is largely complete. This is a Measure D funded project. Work is continuing on the final pavement surface and striping with some corrective surfacing work planned for late June. Installation of project landscaping will continue through the summer. On April 2nd, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held under the new Cacique underpass that was attended by hundreds of people. Phase 2 – US 101 widening from Mussel Shoals to Carpinteria:– On January 3, 2012 a contract was awarded to Granite Construction for the second phase of the project to widen U.S. 101 by adding HOV lanes between Mussel Shoals and Carpinteria (six miles). Work began on this project in April and will continue through 2015. A groundbreaking event was held on April 30, 2012. The total construction capital cost for the project is $66 million, including contingencies. The low bid for this project was $50 million less than the original estimate, demonstrating the excellent construction cost environment that currently exists for large construction projects. The project will be constructed in four stages of work.
