Saldanha Development Zone Pre-Feasibility Analysis - Final Report _OCTOBER 2009 SECTION 5 INDUSTRIAL MARKET ANALYSIS 5.1 INTRODUCTION CHAPTER 7: INDUSTRIAL ANALYSI Saldanha has developed into the largest industrial centre along the West Coast and there is further growth potential in the downstream steel manufacturing sector, agricultural sector and the mining sector, which can lead to job creation. Further growth potential in the oil and gas industries along the coast could also alter the function of the area. As a cautionary note it may be added that the town operates within a particularly sensitive marine and atmospheric environment highly vulnerable to air and water pollution. Great care will have to be taken to ensure sustainable maintenance of a healthy environment. The town is fully dependent on the already heavily taxed Berg River for its water supply - a strategically vulnerable limitation in terms of possible development. Apart from creating a vibrant industrial sector and supportive services and infrastructure, development in the region should also focus on creating a quality of life that contributes to a productive labour force and a favourable working-playing-living environment. This includes initiatives for human resource development, community empowerment, local economic development and basic infrastructure provision. In order to determine the development opportunities that can be exploited for the purpose of industrial establishment in the IDZ, it is necessary to assess the potential provided by existing economic activities in the province, as well as to identify opportunities through planned development initiatives in the country. Linked to this, are the current international market trends in product trading, the potential of establishing industries in the value chain of existing production lines and the potential of products to be manufactured competitively in South Africa (refer to Annexure A : Industrial Market Overview / Indicators). -

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Two Holocene rock shelter deposits from the Knersvlakte, southern Namaqualand, South Africa Abstract This paper describes the first excavations into two Holocene Later Stone Age (LSA) deposits in southern Namaqualand. The limestone shelters afforded excellent preservation, and the LSA sites contained material similar in many respects to shelters in the Cederberg range to the south. Deposition at both sites was discontinuous with a mid-Holocene pulse in Buzz Shelter followed by contact-period deposits over a total depth of some 0.45 m. In Reception Shelter the 1.40 m deposit yielded a basal age in the fifth ot eighth centuries BC with pottery and domestic cow contained within a strong pulse of occupation just above this. -

KULTUURSAkE EN \ PO RT 1 MAY 2009 I Revised report Executive summary Withers Environmental Consultants requested that the Agency for Cultural Resource Management conduct a Phase 1 Archaeological Impact Assessment for a proposed retirement village type development on Erf 36 in St. Helena Bay. The subject property is currently zoned Fishing Industry and will be rezoned to General Residential to accommodate the proposed development. The property is vacant, but the demolished remains of a fishing factory are still visible on the proposed site. Much of the southern and eastern portion of the property is severely degraded, but the northern and western portion is still relatively undisturbed The following findings were made: A shell midden on top of a small dune hummock was documented directly alongside the fence line in the northern portion of the site. Shellfish occurs in open patches on the dune top and is also scattered fairly widely over the surrounding area. Stone tools in quartz, silcrete, quartzite and indurated shale were counted, but these are spread very thinly and unevenly over the area. -

Subsequently, he had worked in the mineral exploration industry in South Africa and had held various postdoctoral and lecturer positions at the universities of Aachen, Cologne and the Witwatersrand before joining Stellenbosch University in 1999. Currently, he is appointed at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Stellenbosch, as a professor in structural geology and tectonics where he teaches under- and postgraduate courses. He has supervised and cosupervised over 50 honours students, 15 MSc studies and 7 PhD studies. Alex has held a National Research Foundation rating for the past 15 years and a B-rating for the last five years. His research focuses on a range of topics related to crustal deformation aimed at integrating field data with regional tectonic models and more generic processes of melt transport and hydrothermal fluid flow in the Earth’s crust. 1 ABSTRACT he geological evolution of the Western Cape remains elusive after over 100 years of research. Based on regional Tfieldwork and correlations, this contribution aims to develop a tectonic model for the deposition and deformation of rocks of the Malmesbury Group, the rocks that underlie much of the Western Cape. -

These activities contribute to an array of problems and associated environmental impacts and socio-economic consequences, when managed inappropriately, as illustrated in Table 7.1 and Table 7.2. From these tables it is clear that there are no one-to-one linkages between the activities, problems and impacts – several activities can contribute to one or more problems which, in turn, can contribute to more than one impact, and vice versa. -

University ABSTRACT This thesis assesses the feasibility of using wood charcoal from archaeological sites as a palaeoclimatic indicator. Three techniques are described: (i) charcoal identification from Xylem Anatomy. (ii) Ecologically Diagnostic Xylem Analysis and (iii) stable carbon isotope analysis on wood charcoal. The first is a well established method of environmental reconstruction. This is the first systematic application of Ecologically Diagnostic Analysis and the first application of stable carbon isotope analysis on wood charcoal. Charcoal identification shows that the most common woody species at Elands Bay today are also evident in the archaeological record over the last 4000 years, indicating a relatively stable plant community composition. Previous studies of wood anatomy have shown that there are links between vessel size, vessel number and climate. This study demonstrates that the wood anatomy of Rhus is not simply related to climatic factors, necessitating the employment of a wide range of statistical analytical techniques to identify climatic signals. In contrast, the anatomy of Diospyros shows strong correlations with temperature. -
