CLYNE The community was much pained on Wednesday morning to hear that Mr. Wm. CLYNE, formerly deputy reeve of Downie, had met his death by drowning. The particulars of the sad event will be gathered from the following testimony taken by Coroner JACKSON, at an inquest held by him on Wednesday evening, before an intelligent jury, with Mr. [smear on the page] as foreman. Maria CLYNE--The last time I saw my husband alive was at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He was then in good health. The girl told me he was going over to Richard's his son-in-law's house. That was the last I saw of him. Elizabeth POLLNER--Deceased came to the bar at Mr. DUNN's hotel between 1 and 2 o'clock yesterday. He seemed to be in a hurry and did not sit down. He remained about 10 minutes. He got half a gallon of whiskey and said he was in a hurry to get home as the men were waiting. He then seemed quite well in health. He went straight towards home. Wm CLYNE--Am a nephew of the deceased. First saw the body at Dan MacNAMARA's. They were then hurrying home with him. Heard he was found between POLLNER's and Dan MacNAMARA's. Know nothing concerning the cause of death except what I heard. John CLYNE--Am a son of the deceased. Found the body this morning at 8 o'clock in Robert HALL's field, lying all under water except one arm. The ground is rough through there. The ground where he was found is low and swampy. Never heard of anyone threatening him with bodily injury. Elizabeth POLLNER recalled--Did not notice any liquor on deceased when I saw him. James CLYNE--Am a nephew of the deceased. Saw him last alive on Sunday. Saw the body about 9 o'clock this morning in R. HALL's field. The body was under water except the right arm which was stretched across a log. Could not say how he got there. Think the water came over him. Have no reason for suspecting that violence was offered him. Richard HERRON--I saw the corpse at 9 o'clock this morning in Robert HALL's field. The body was then in the water, with the right arm on a log. Life seemed to have been extinct for quite a time. I saw no marks on the body. I think deceased laid down there and that the water came over him. There were about two feet of water. Deceased was lying on his face. John HYDE, M.D., Stratford--I have known the deceased for twenty years. On examining the body, I found the external surface well nourished. The body seemed to me to have been for some time in water. I saw no marks of violence of any moment. My opinion is that the deceased was suffocated by water entering the cavity of the chest. This closed the evidence and the jury returned as their verdict that Wm. CLYNE came to his death accidentally by being drowned. ----------------------------- William married Mariah Morris-[55] [MRIN: 21], daughter of Anthony 1st Morris-[365] and Hosford?- [781], in 1837 in Ontario Cda.
