Introduction and acknowledgements

This booklet shares the story, as can be traced through available records, of Andrew Hassett my 2nd Great Grand Uncle, who left a small rural farm in Knockanean, near Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland in 1851 to seek a better life in the US. We will never know if his motivation for leaving was the famine in Ireland, which was coming to an end, or as per some family tales to escape trouble.

Through my research I found two Andrew Hassett’s who came to New York. In the Appendix I have detailed how I identified which Andrew Hassett was my ancestor.

There are a number of people without whom this story might not have been written, and to whom I am greatly indebted.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to my cousin Margaret Donohue and my husband Michael van Turnhout for their patient guidance, enthusiastic encouragement and useful critiques of this research.

I would like to thank my Grand Aunt, Kathleen Hassett (born 1897, died 1985) for so meticulously and lovingly writing out the family history. In this book you will find reference to “family memoirs of Kathleen Hassett”. These memoirs are lovingly cared for by my 1st cousin 1 x removed Margaret Donohue. These memoirs were the impetus and starting point for my research.

I would like to say a special thank you to Declan Barron of Newpark House, Ennis for his help with the original baptism records of Mary Hassett; to Cecelia Juskiewicz (aka ‘joiseygirl’) who through the ‘Find A Grave’ website located the Hassett family plot and took photos in New Jersey for me; and to Patricia Schneider, Administrative Assistant at the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola, New York for sourcing church records.

I would like to share my appreciation of the work of the staff at The National Archives of Ireland, The National Library of Ireland and The New York Public Library.

Last but not least, I wish to thank my parents, Jenny and Michael Hassett, who started me out on this journey.

I am open and interested to receive any further information or guidance.

Parents of Andrew Hassett

The parents of Andrew Hassett are my 3rd Great Grandparents Father: Patrick Hassett was born about 1807 in Co. Clare and he died on 25 August 1883 in Knockanean, Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland. He was a farmer and died aged 76 without medical attention at home. Mother: Johanna Burns was born before . She died in Co. Clare, Ireland.1 I estimate they were married in 1825 in Co. Clare. Their marriage year is based on the birth year of Patrick Hassett and the birth years of their children.

They had four known children:  Michael Hassett was born between 1825-1840 in Co Clare, Ireland. According to family memoirs of Kathleen Hassett: “Michael was entrusted with the task of taking a load of wheat to Limerick, 23 miles away, probably because of the larger market there. He set off with a horse and a cart loaded with wheat. It was sold, but Michael never returned to Knockanean - instead he took ship in Australia. Presumably he got in touch with the family back home, but the correspondence lapsed.”

To date, I have not been able to trace Michael’s history or establish any facts.

 Patrick Hassett was born around 1825, in Co. Clare and died between 1867-19012 in Co. Clare, Ireland. He married Mary Collins, daughter of John Collins and Mary, after 1843. It is thought that they first lived in Drumdoolaghty then Knockanean, Co. Clare. Mary Collins was born about 1825 in Toonagh, Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland. She died on 5 December 1902 in Knockanean, Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland. She died of senile decay. Family records say that Mary is buried in the family grave in Doora Abbey, Co. Clare.

According to family memoirs of Kathleen Hassett: “Patrick and Mary seemed to live in Drumdoolaghty, Co. Clare and were evicted (reason unknown) and then moved to Knockanean, Ennis, Co. Clare.

Patrick Hassett, like his neighbours, rented his farm which was part of the Gabbett estate (First William Henry Gabbett and then Wyndham Gabbett). His rent was paid semi- annually, to the agent in Limerick, 23 miles away, and, because the rail fare meant a small drain on the family finances. The men met and walked through the night in a body

1 I have tried without success to find death records. 2 I have not been able to establish when Patrick died but estimate it was between 1866 and 1901. His last child was born in July 1867 and at the time of the 1901 Census his wife was a widow. Andrew Hassett, Family History Page 7

to Limerick. The agent was a kindly man, and, on being paid, returned to each man the rail fare home to Ennis, but again in the interests of economy, the party walked completing the journey (46 miles in all) in 24/36 hours. One particular night was wet and cold, and Patrick reaching home, took no precautions against the weather and its results. He developed rheumatic fever, which incapacitated him for the rest of his life. Patrick Hassett says that his family was from Kilrush, Co. Clare.”

I plan to write up a separate family history of Patrick Hassett and Mary Collins who were my Great Great Grandparents.

 Mary Ann Hassett was born in the Parish of Doora in March 18264 in Co. Clare, Ireland. She died on 26 September 1899 in Watertown, Wisconsin, USA. She married Thomas Sullivan from Ireland who was a Carpenter. He was born about . He died on 12 May 1882 in Watertown, Wisconsin, USA.

I am in the process of writing up the history covering the life of Mary Ann Hassett.

 Andrew Hassett was born in 1829 Co. Clare, Ireland (Noting his Death Certificate states birth year as 1836). He died on 17 November 1892 at 162 E 84th Street, New York, USA. He is buried in St. Peters' Catholic Cemetery, Jersey City, New Jersey.

This booklet covers his life, as can traced through historical records and family records, of Andrew Hassett.

Parents of Catherine Connors

Catherine Connors was the wife of Andrew Hassett.

Father: John Connors was born in Co. Clare before 1818 (based on birth date of his son Thomas). Mother: Mary Mears was born about .5 She emigrated from Ireland and arrived in New York with her two children on 23 June 1854. I have not found any further details of her life.

They had at least four children:

 Catherine Connors was born about 1829 in Ireland. Her birth year is 1837 according to her death certificate and immigration records. However according to the 1880 Census it is about 1828. I have found her baptism in Birdhill, Parish of Doora, Co. Clare and her birth is 29 December 1829.

 John Connors born 12 February 1834, Doora, Co. Clare (Twin)

 Bridget Connors born 12 February 1834, Doora, Co. Clare (Twin)

 Thomas Connors was born about .6

Catherine travelled to New York in 1854 with her mother Mary and her brother Thomas. She died on 5 July 1904 in City Hospital, New York.

This booklet also covers the life, as can traced through historical records, of Catherine Connors.

2. Andrew Hassett and Catherine Connors

Andrew Hassett was born in 1829 in Co. Clare, Ireland (It is most likely to be about 1829, however his Death Certificate states his birth year as 1836). He died on 17 November 1892 at 162 E 84th Street, New York, USA. He is buried in St. Peters' Catholic Cemetery, Jersey City, New Jersey.

The following are excerpts from stories relayed to the author by Margaret Donohue who was first told the stories by her Aunt Kathleen Hassett (my Grand Aunt).

“Andy Hassett was a different proposition. On one occasion, some timber was needed for work in Knockanean, so Andy decided to cut down and steal a young tree from Toureen (home of the Hynes Family - Francey Hynes was executed in or about 1887 for the murder of John Doolaghty, herdsman for P.J. MacNamara of Mount Callan at Drumdoolaghty). As Andy and his brother carried the tree along through the night a little man leapt on the tree, adding considerably to its weight. The brother, scared, fled for home, but Andy sat down on his end of the tree, matching the little man on the other end, and declared his intention of sitting him out. Sure enough, when the first cock crew, the wee fellow rose and disappeared, and Andy bore his tree home.

On another occasion, Andy decided to take an active part in dealing with a "bad" landlord or his agent. He took up a position behind a hedge or a wall, at a point in the road where his intended victim was bound to pass, but the victim, on that occasion, chose to return home by a different route, and Andy had his cold vigil for nothing. The incident, or its failure got talked about, and Andy got away to America before justice could catch up with him. He is reputed to have made a living by gambling. (Could Hassett Avenue, Las Vegas, have been named after him? Certainly it was named after a notorious gambler in the early days of the city.) Years later, the story got back to Knockanean that Andy had been recognised an old man in a gambling saloon in the Bowery, New York, by a fellow exile.”

I have found no evidence of my relation Andrew Hassett visiting Las Vegas. I did find an Andrew Hassett in the 1880 US Census in Nevada but he was born in 1847 and so would be too young to be my relation. There is indeed a Hassett Avenue in Las Vegas, Nevada and so who knows! However, in the lifetime of Andrew Las Vegas was a small farming town that started to grow only after 1885 when it was connected to railways. It did not become a city until after his death and only became a gaming town after 1930.

Catherine Connors was born on 29 December 1829 in Birdhill, Parish of Doora, Co. Clare, Ireland. She died on 5 July 1904 in City Hospital, New York, USA. She is buried in St. Peters' Catholic Cemetery, Jersey City, New Jersey.

Andrew Hassett and Catherine Connors married on 20 September 1857 in New Jersey7 and they had five children:

 Martin Hassett was born between November and December 1859 in New Jersey, USA. He died on 29 October 1862 in Manhattan, New York.  Thomas Patrick Hassett was born 16 January 1862 in New York. He died on 18 January 1890 in Manhattan, New York.  William Hassett was born about 1864 in Manhattan, New York. He died on 3 November 1866 in Manhattan, New York.  Mary Ann L Hassett was born 15 August 1866 in New York. She married John McGowan Jr. on 12 February 1896 in Manhattan, New York. She died 24 May 1900 in Manhattan, New York.  Michael Hassett was born about 27 March 1869 in Manhattan, New York. He died on 11 April 1869 in Manhattan, New York.

1851 Arrival of Andrew Hassett in New York Andrew Hassett arrived in New York on 8 November 1851 via Liverpool on the Ship David Cannon.8 Andrew Hassett is recorded on the passenger list as a workman and is aged 21. This ship on previous journeys stopped in Queenstown (Cobh, Cork) but I have no record to show if Andrew embarked in Liverpool or Cork. It is most likely he boarded in Cobh, Cork which is 145km/90 miles, about 30 hours on foot, from Knockanean.

In the arrival records for New York Port, Andrew Hassett was registered as a workman and his native country Great Britain.9 At that time Ireland was part of the ‘United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland’. There were 608 passengers on this boat that embarked from Liverpool, England. I checked the full passenger list10 for this ship and cannot find Catherine Connors or any other member of the Hassett family.

Andrew Hassett can also be found on the United States Famine Irish Passenger Index, 1846- 1851 which shows he travelled to America at the end of the famine in Ireland.11

1854 Arrival of Catherine Connors in New York As far as I can establish Catherine Connors, age 17, arrived in New York on 23 June 1854 via Liverpool on the Ship Kossuth.12 She was travelling with her mother Mary Connors, age 40 and her brother Thomas, age 18.13 Her mother was registered on arrival at America's first official immigration center, Castle Garden.14

To date, I have not been able to verify records of Mary Connors née Mears or Thomas Connors in New York as there are several candidates in the online records available.

It seems they first lived in New Jersey but within a few years, around early 1860, they moved to Yorkville, Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York. More details on Yorkville can be found in Chapter 4.

1857 Marriage of Andrew Hassett and Catherine Connors On 20 September 1857 Hassit [sic] married Cath Connors in Saint Peter-Catholic, Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey15

Saint Peter's was the first parish established in Jersey City and in Hudson County. The Church was founded January 29, 1831, under the diocese of New York (the Diocese of Newark, NJ, was not established until July 29, 1853). The Bishop of the Diocese of New York at the time was John DuBois, New York's third Bishop.16

Their first child Martin Hassett was born between November to December in 1859 and moved to Manhattan shortly afterwards. I have not been able to source records of his birth.

The marriage records of Andrew Hassett to Cath Connors can be found via the FamilySearch files. I requested these records and accessed them at Pearse Street Library Dublin.17

Andrew Hassett and Catherine Connors married on September 1857 in St Peter’s Church in New Jersey. The witnesses were Denis O’Donovan and Susan O’Halloran

Andrew and Catherine always lived in the same few streets in Yorkville, Upper East Side of Manhattan. Andrew was a labourer and so it is likely that they rented a room or two in one of houses on East 88th Street in the 12 Ward of New York.

1904 Death of Catherine Hassett née Connors Catherine Hassett née Connors died, age 63, on 5 July 1904 at 3pm in City Hospital, New York, USA. Death certificate number 25672. She died of Chronic Diffuse Nephritis (nephritis was inflammation of the kidney).

Catherine died in New York Hospital which was the oldest hospital in New York City and the second oldest hospital in the United States.27

By the time Catherine died her husband and her five children had died. I cannot imagine how she felt in her last years and can only hope she was surrounded by friends.

At this time the niece of Andrew Hassett, Bridget ‘Delia’ McDermott née Hassett was living in 115 89th Street New York with her husband Bernard McDermott and family. In Appendix 1, I found the Natualization Record for Bernard McDermott of 24 October 1881 and the person who testified to his good character was Andreas [sic] Hassett. Hopefully they were able to provide support to Catherine during her last weeks.

The residence of Catherine Hassett née Connors at the time of her death was 123 E 88th Street where she lived since April 8 1904.

1862 to 1904 Burials – St. Peters' Catholic Cemetery Thankfully, all of the family were buried in the same plot in St Peters' Cemetery, New Jersey.

St. Peters' Catholic Cemetery is located just south of Tonnelle Circle near Croxton Yard in Jersey City, New Jersey and is administered by Holy Name Cemetery. The first burial at this cemetery is said to have been on June 9, 1849 prior to the land being deeded to the cemetery association. This cemetery is the oldest in the Archdiocese of Newark. The cemetery is associated with St. Peter's Church which was founded in 1829 in Jersey City. The 4.92-acre (19,900 m2) plot of land is said to have been purchased from Walter Van Winkle in September 1849 by twelve men who formed an association. In early November of that year promotional lots were for sale. A 9-foot (2.7 m) by 10-foot (3.0 m) section cost $15.00. In 1875 several graves were relocated thanks to the Legislature for a railroad right of way. The last burial at this cemetery is said to have been circa 2003.28

In 1890, in response to a feeling that New York City was undercounted in the federal census, political leaders had the police force do a recount. The 1890 Police census began on 29 September and was mostly completed by 14 October. 32

1900 Death of Mary Mc Gowan née Hassett Mary died on 22 May 1900. She died of chronic gastritis and asthenia which started on 25 March 1900. Her last residence, and place of death, was 165 East 87th Street. She was a housekeeper and married. It seems on death certificates at that time ones parents are noted but not a spouse and so there are no details of her husband John McGowan Jr.

4. Yorkville Yorkville33 is a neighbourhood in the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. It includes Carl Schurz Park and Gracie Mansion. Its southern boundary is East 79th Street, its northern East 96th Street, its western Third Avenue, and its eastern the East River.

For much of the 19th and 20th centuries, Yorkville was a middle-to working-class neighbourhood, inhabited by many people of Czech, Slovak, Irish, Polish, German, Hungarian and Lebanese descent. The largest non-German group were the Irish. They attended mass at such churches as St. Ignatius Loyola on 84th Street and Park Avenue, Our Lady of Good Counsel (90th Street) and the Church of St. Joseph (87th Street). There were many Irish bars including Finnegan's Wake, Dorrian's Red Hand Restaurant, Ireland's 32, Carrol's Hideaway, O'Brien's and Kinsale Tavern. Until the late 1990s, New York's St. Patrick's Day Parade ended at 86th Street and Third Avenue, the historical center of Yorkville.

East 88th Street The current building on the plot where Andrew and family lived on East 88th Street is now home to a special education school, the P.S. M169 Robert F. Kennedy School.34

The old style of house in Yorkville could be type of house lived by Andrew and examples can be found on the following webpages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_78th_Street_Houses and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_73rd_Street_Historic_District.

History of the Upper East Side35 Before the arrival of Europeans to New York City, the Upper East Side was home to Native American fishing camps along the East River bluffs. As immigrants arrived on Manhattan’s shores, most inhabitants remained in lower Manhattan, and the Upper East Side existed as rural farmland and market gardens for many years.

This began to change in 1837, when the New York and Harlem Railroad began to increase commercial development around its one station in the neighborhood, at 86th Street. This hub of new growth would eventually become the heart of German Yorkville, which extended east past Lexington Avenue and became a suburb of middle-class Germans, many of whom worked in nearby piano factories, stables, and breweries. Amidst the growing commercialization of the mid-19th century, much of the remaining farmland was subdivided, the exceptions being the 150 acres of Jones’ Wood, stretching from 66th to 76th Streets and from the Old Post Road (Third Avenue) to the river, and the stretch of farmland inherited by James Lenox, now present-day Lenox Hill.

Andrew Hassett, Family History Page 32

During the second half of the 19th century, vast numbers of foreign immigrants and other American migrants flooded New York City, causing a population boom that pushed speculative development beyond the settled downtown districts of the time. This development was temporarily curbed by the Panic of 1873, a severe economic depression that lasted for about six years and sent uptown land prices plummeting. But by the start of the 1880s, financial recovery and the opening of newly built elevated railroads on Second and Third Avenues allowed what is now the Upper East Side to regain its status as a prime location for speculative residential real estate investment and development.

The early 1890s saw almost the entire area, with the exception of pricey lots along Fifth Avenue, built up with residences for those commuting to the bustling commercial areas downtown. The western sections of the area had newly constructed brick or stone row houses in the Neo-Grec, Queen Anne or Romanesque Revival styles that were built for sale to the middle-class. These row houses were often purchased by business and professional people, many of whom were successful immigrants with German, German-Jewish or Irish heritage. A number of these original structures remain today, marking the rich architectural tradition of this part of the City. Farther east, closer to the noise and grit of the new elevated trains, larger tenements were constructed to accommodate the increasing numbers of working class people.

Prior to the 1890s, Fifth Avenue north of 59th Street was not considered to be a prestigious neighborhood, with the wealthiest and most affluent people living south of 59th Street in mansions and row houses near Fifth Avenue. By the mid-1890s, however, the wealthy class began to dip its toe in the water of speculating in real estate and by 1915 large palatial residences were erected on Fifth Avenue all the way up to 96th Street.

As development expanded northward along 59th street in the early 20th century, a substantial number of the row houses on neighboring streets were demolished and replaced by newer, more elegant residences. At the same time, New York Central’s Railroad tracks along Park Avenue were electrified and covered, which eliminated many nuisance conditions and restored land values.

5. Mary Rowan Mary Rowan was born in 1862 in Ireland and after only six months in New York she had an accidental death by inhaling illuminating gas. Mary Rowan was buried with the Hassett family in St Peters’ Catholic Cemetery. I have not been able to establish what the relationship between my family and Mary Rowan was with the Hassett’s given that she was only 6 months in New York.

Appendix 1: Bernard McDermott and Andrew Hassett

Bridget ‘Delia’ Hassett (1850 to 1928) was a niece from Knockanean, Co. Clare. She was living in 115 89th Street New York with her husband Bernard McDermott and family. Shortly after 1872 when she first came to New York she lived in 111th Street. It was only in May 2016 I established that they were in contact. I found the Natualization Record for Bernard McDermott of 24 October 1881 and the person who testified to his good character was Andres [sic] Hassett.

A remaining question is what were the links between the McDermott family living in the next block and Andrew Hassett and family? Did Bridget help her Uncles family following his death – especially when his wife Catherine Hassett née Connors died and was the last remaining member of the family? Who arranged her funeral?

Appendix 2: Questions needing further investigation

1. Where was John McGowan or Catherine Hassett in 1900 US Federal Census? I cannot find John McGowan or Catherine Hassett née Connors in 1900 US Census Mary McGowan née Hassett died in May and so won’t appear as it was taken in June 1900

Tried the following addresses but without luck:  Address of Andrew, Catherine and Mary in 1890 Police Census: 116 East 88th Street http://bit.ly/192vltw  Address in 1892 of Andrew Hassett when he died 162 East 84th Street http://bit.ly/1bRYqTi  Address of John McGowan and Mary Hassett in 1896 at time of wedding: 1067 Park Avenue http://bit.ly/JMsOrl  Address in May 1900 at time of Mary McGowan death 165 East 87th Street http://bit.ly/1iQbM8t and http://bit.ly/L90IYS  Address in 1900 of the McDermott Family – Delia was niece of Andrew Hassett 115 89th Street, Manhattan Ward 12 http://bit.ly/1dkHp4L  Address in 1900 of witness to wedding of Mary Hassett and John McGowan: Hannah Purcell is living at 106 East 88th Street, New York http://bit.ly/Knq44T  Address of Catherine Hassett on death certificate in 1904: 123 East 88th Street http://bit.ly/1bCwlzf  This John McGowan lived with a Mary but one parent born in US and he was a fireman and so it is not them: http://bit.ly/1bQHXzC

There is a remote possibility that this is Catherine in hospital in 1900 as Mary Hassett had died at this stage: http://bit.ly/MoSvQn

2. Is this John McGowan’s first marriage (and family) in the 1890 Police Census? I checked the 1890 Police New York Census36 and found the following which might be John McGowan’s first family:  John McGowan age 26 years  Annie McGowan age 21 years  Bessie McGowan age 2 years  Mary McGowan age 1 year  Annie McGowan age 3 months

They can all be found in Book 10, Item # 56, Page 35, Microfilm # 1304778.

36 Ancestry.com (2013) All New York City Police Census, 1890 results for Mcgowan Available at: http://ancstry.me/1lrrkPx (Accessed: 29 December 2013). Andrew Hassett, Family History Page 37

This can only be checked in New York Public Library. It would be interesting to see if it presents any further details. Also should look for the Connors family. Both seem to disappear in 1900 census.

If this is correct then his first wife was Annie (Ann) McGowan as according to the 1890 Police Census. If yes, she died on 26 April 1894 in Manhattan.37 Her death certificate number is 14316 (1894). She was born in 1868/69 and so she died age 25. I have the certificate but cannot prove yet if this is her?

Need to check out McGowans in 1890 Police Census and onwards (e.g. 1900 Census) – to verify if same family or another family with similar names.

3. Potential Mary Connors mother of Catherine Hassett née Connors Death Records of New York, Manhattan http://bit.ly/1hpsttG

I have the above certificate in yellow but I do not think this is the mother of Catherine as she has only been resident for 12 years in the city. This can be found as reference U005 in my BMD certificates file.

Unlikely Candidate: In the federal census of 1860 and 1870 I can find a Mary Conner born in 1815 who is a domestic servant. In 1880 she lives on her own. In all three cases she lives in New Jersey. She is buried in St. Peter’s although her age is a bit out (would be 73)

4. Outstanding queries or seeking additional evidence  I am still trying to trace death record of Martin Hassett in 1862 and death record of Thomas Hassett who I know died on 18 January 1890 in Manhattan, New York.

I did order this record (reference U006 in my BMD file) but he is buried in Calvary

Appendix 3: Identifying which Andrew Hassett is my ancestor Through my research I found two Andrew Hassett’s who came to New York. One, my relation, based himself in Manhattan. The second Andrew Hassett lived in Saratoga, New York. To add to this researcher’s confusion they both had a wife called Catherine and had two living children – Thomas and Mary in the case of my relative and John and Mary in the case of Andrew from Saratoga. After tracing both of lives, through available records, I am convinced that I have identified the correct ancestor. I have records available in relation to Andrew Hassett of Saratoga if they are of interest to any of his descendants.
