Email: [email protected] www.facebook.com/jillianvanturnhout @JillianvT www.jillianvanturnhout.ie Introduction and acknowledgements This booklet shares the story, as can be traced through available records, of Andrew Hassett my 2nd Great Grand Uncle, who left a small rural farm in Knockanean, near Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland in 1851 to seek a better life in the US. We will never know if his motivation for leaving was the famine in Ireland, which was coming to an end, or as per some family tales to escape trouble. Through my research I found two Andrew Hassett’s who came to New York. In the Appendix I have detailed how I identified which Andrew Hassett was my ancestor. There are a number of people without whom this story might not have been written, and to whom I am greatly indebted. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to my cousin Margaret Donohue and my husband Michael van Turnhout for their patient guidance, enthusiastic encouragement and useful critiques of this research. I would like to thank my Grand Aunt, Kathleen Hassett (born 1897, died 1985) for so meticulously and lovingly writing out the family history. In this book you will find reference to “family memoirs of Kathleen Hassett”. These memoirs are lovingly cared for by my 1st cousin 1 x removed Margaret Donohue. These memoirs were the impetus and starting point for my research. I would like to say a special thank you to Declan Barron of Newpark House, Ennis for his help with the original baptism records of Mary Hassett; to Cecelia Juskiewicz (aka ‘joiseygirl’) who through the ‘Find A Grave’ website located the Hassett family plot and took photos in New Jersey for me; and to Patricia Schneider, Administrative Assistant at the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola, New York for sourcing church records. I would like to share my appreciation of the work of the staff at The National Archives of Ireland, The National Library of Ireland and The New York Public Library. Last but not least, I wish to thank my parents, Jenny and Michael Hassett, who started me out on this journey. I am open and interested to receive any further information or guidance.
