The ages of this couple and their birth place is only on census records found in OHIO. Ireland is declared as birth place and their ages are estimated for Samuel as b. ca 1786 and Benza as b. ca 1795. Deaths are estimated according to census: Samuel died before 1870 and Benza died after 1880. Records for their first six daughters indicate those girls were born in Ireland - noted on death certificates. Susan the 7th daughter's death certificate shows she was born in Cleveland, Ohio and a later record for Samuel Jr. found his birth was in Union Twp., Noble Co., OH.

Records were found by a researcher, Lois Blake, in Caldwell, OH. Further information was found by other descendants of some of the children, and will be so noted in their information. See ******* for contributors.

The place in Ireland where this family originated is not known. One descendant says it may have been near or in but he has no proof, other than family stories. Supposedly, Benza was the grand daughter of the Duke of Rutherford who had a castle 20 Miles outside of Dublin that was destroyed in a 'Catholic Revolution'. However no such duke has ever been found in ANY country. It has been determined that the parents with six children may have come into the United States via Baltimore as Coleen Snyder of New Haven, IN (descended from Jane Cooper) says the family lived there for a time - she c thought her grandmother was born there (see Obits for Joseph Davidson) but census indicates otherwise. But we know the sixth daughter was born in Ireland which would mean the family departed and arrived after June 1831 when Sarah Cooper was born. On census in Brown Co., IN, for daughter, Sarah, in the 1900 census, there is data that she immigrated in 1831. This date was found by a descendant, Tom Moore in Grand Rapids, Ml in his research.

It is believed Samuel Sr. was a farmer; and according to later records found in Susan Cooper's files, the mother "Benzy" was an accoucheur or midwife. At least she performed that service for her daughter's Susan's child, Aaron Morris, (the son of Susan's first husband, Apollo Morris). Benza is found with other given names so it is unknown whether "Benza" was a nickname or not. She is found listed as Francis, Jane, Benzie and Benzy. Other than Susan's birth certificate with the information that Cleveland, OH was her birth place, we have found no other record of the family living in Cleveland. The first census found is 1850 in Union Twp., Monroe County (later after 1851, this area became Center Twp., Noble Co., OH). At this time Samuel is listed as age 63 yrs, b. in Ireland and 'Banzey' is age 55 yrs, b. in Ireland. Census of 1850 reads: COOPER Samuel age 63 b. Ireland Banzey age 55 b. Ireland Susanna age 16 b. Ohio Samuel age 13 b. Ohio In the 1860 census Center Twp., Noble Co., OH COOPER Samuel age 74 b. Ire "Betsey" age 65 b. Ire Samuel Jr. age 23 b. OHIO

1870 census Tom Moore found a film for Center Twp., page 49, roll 315B see data under Samuel Cooper Jr. for 1870. At this time "Francis" age 78 is living with her son and family so assume that Samuel Sr. had died by this date.

In the 1880 census we find Jane Cooper age 85 years living with her daughter, Jane and son-in-law Joseph Davidson in Center Twp., Noble County.

The names of the children were first revealed by Coleen Snyder, when she and her mother went to Caldwell, OH in 1983, and checked out cemetery records and tombstones. In a letter she wrote in 1994, she said she found the c children listed as Louise m. McClintock, Fannie m. Moore, Sarah m. Moore, Rebecca m. Landis, Mary Ann m. George Keller, Susan m.1st to Morris & 2nd to Henderson, Samuel m. Maggie Carter, then Cynthia Wilson (this is WRONG as he was not married to Maggie Carter). Coleen also said that family history noted, "Benza would dance an Irish dance when old and say, 'Oh Lord! forgive me! I know you will do that.". Some of this data Coleen found in a notebook that had been kept by her grandmother. Census data was found by Lois Blake, also some Obits.

SAMUEL AND BENZA HAD 8 CHILDREN:

li Louise Cooper (listed as first born in Coleen's notes) b. ca 1821 Ireland and married to McCLINTOCK No other info or data found for this couple despite Lois Blake, researching in Noble Co., OH. If the estimated birth year is correct then Louise would have been about 10 years old when she came to the U. S., so would have married in this country. Not found on census in Ohio. 2, Mary Ann Cooper b. August 20, d. 1871, m. Sep 20, 1835 Monroe Co., OH George KELLER b. Jan 11, 1817, d. May 20, 1903. (same as Seneca of Noble Co. - after 1851) KELLER, George age 32 (1818) b. OH, teamster Mary A. age 27 (1823) b. Ireland Samuel age 9 (1841) b. Ohio Mary B. age 8 (1842) b. Note: This family is not found in any Noble County records in later years. Joanne E. Williamson (m. Harley L. Barber) descends from Mary Ann Cooper & possible other children of Mary's, are Jane, Charlie, Margaret, John, Anna according to notes from Harley. C COOPER REFERENCES: OBITS

Obit - SUSAN COOPER HENDERSON from Noble County Leader 24 Aug 1910 "Susan (Cooper) Henderson, daughter of Samuel and Benza Cooper, was born at Cleveland, Ohio, October 3,1837, and departed this life on August 12, 1910, making her age 76 years, 10 months and 9 days. She was united in marriage to Poland A. Morris on the 13th day of September 1857; and to this union were born three children. The husband gave up his life for his country in the year 1864, while the children of this union have preceded her to the great beyond. She was again united in marriage to William Henderson on June 30, 1866; and to this union were born five daughters and one son. Her husband preceded her to the great beyond eleven years ago. There are left to mourn her death the following children: Mrs Johnson Marks of Ava, Mrs. R. W. Oliver, Mrs J. H. Craft of Byesville: Mrs Howard Steele of Hartford: G. H. Henderson of Freeland, and Miss Amanda Henderson of Cambridge, and twenty-three grandchildren. She united with the Christian church at Mt Ephraim a number of years ago and was a devoted member until the end. She was a devoted wife and mother and showed her high ideals in the lives of her family and by her patient suffering in the end." Her DEATH Certificate says birth was Oct 3,1935 - this is believed the correct year of her birth.

Obit for WILLIAM HENDERSON Noble County Leader. 13 Sept 1899 "William Henderson, aged eighty-two years, died at his home near Mt Ephraim, Friday, and was buried at that place Sunday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. Bowman Hostetler. The deceased was an old soldier and his funeral was attended by a number of his comrades from Caldwell. By his death he leaves a widow and a number of grown children." 2nd Obit; "HENDERSON, WILLIAM, b. County Tyrone, Ireland, May 1 1830, d. Mt. Ephraim, Sept 8, 1899; came to the U. S. to Belmont Count, 1842 with brothers, James, John and Samuel and parents; GAR; came to Noble County 1865 and m. Susan Morris June 30, 1866; children: Mrs Rachel Marks, Mrs. Mary Oliver, Mrs. Matilda Craft, Mrs Caroline Steele, George and Amanda." (Other records indicate birth year was 1827)

Obit for MRS. PETER MOORE (FRANCIS COOPER) newspaper source unknown. "The death of Mrs Fannie, wife of Peter Moore, occurred Monday, September 3rd, 1906. Interment Tuesday. Services were conducted by Rev. George T. Humble. She had been helpless about a year. Her age was 76 years, 7 months and 23 days. She was the mother of ten children, six boys and four girls, two of whom preceded her to the great beyond. Her husband and eight children survive her and a host of friends cherish her memory. Her faith was strong and in her quiet ways she was always glad to tell of her living hope in Christ. In the home will be a vacant place that is powerless to fill. The husband will miss a companion whose loss words or heart cannot express. The children coming home will miss mother and the greeting of her welcome smile. She was a good and noble woman. May the Lord bless the hearthstone made desolate, the house in which a voice is stilled, and may he help us to remember the house not made with hands eternal in heaven"

Obits for JOSEPH DAVIDSON (HUSBAND OF JANE COOPER) - all found by Mrs. Lois Blake in Caldwell, OH. Each of the 3 has varying data. 1. "The death of Mr. Joseph Davidson, one of the oldest, as well as the best residents of Noble County, occurred at his home on Nov. 27,1895. He had been feeble for about 3 years, and death when it came was the result of the gradual giving away of the vital powers and the weaknessesses of old age. He was born in West Virginia, April 28, 1814, and the age of 16 emigrated with his parents to Ohio, and settled on the farm on which he died, then almost a wilderness. April 10,1839, he was joined in marriage to Miss Jane Cooper and to them were born 13 children, nine of whom survive him. A kind and affectionate loving father and conscientious Christian has gone to his reward. His life was in all respects noble and honorable, with malice toward none and charity for all his earthly record was pure and unsullied and he leaves to his family the rich legacy of an honorable life. Patient and cheerful under all circumstances he was the central figure in the home circle, and his loss has cast a deep, dark shadow over the home that years will not obliterate. Mr. Davidson has been a consistent member of the U. B. Church for several years prior to his death, and when the summons came there was no need for preparation, but as peaceful as a child sinks to sleep in his mother's arms, he passed to that home whole maker is God. The deceased leaves as estimable wife and 9 children, to whom the hearts of our people go out in tender sympathy in the great and sudden sorrow that has come upon them. The funeral services were held from the last residence of the deceased November 29, conducted by Revs. M. L. Oliver and James Call. The members of the family were all present at the funeral."

2. "The death of Mr. Joe Davidson occurred at his home near Fredriksdale, Wednesday the 27th. The deceased was born in West Virginia in the year 1814. He came of Ohio when he was 16 and settled near where he passed his last days among the living. He was united in marriage to Miss Jane Cooper in 1839, thirteen children were born to them of whom nine survive. We doubt if any name in that section was more generally known that Joseph Davidson, none was higher esteemed. He was seven months past his 81 years of age. The funeral took place Friday from his late home and his remains were laid to rest in the cemetery of Mt. Ephraim. In paying tribute to the departed one we do not forget the bereavement that has fallen upon the family, but in this connection call attention to the kindly emancipated from this methodical life of manly endeavor"

3. "Joseph Davidson, one of the pioneer residents of Noble County died at his home near Fredricksdale last Wednesday evening of infirmities incident to old age. By birth, he was a Virginian and came to this country and located on the farm on which he died in 1819, being but six years of age at the time of his arrival here. He was married to Jane Cooper who came from Maryland and who survives him , to which union were born, thirteen children, nine of whom are still living. They are George W., W. S., William, Charles (ex OH State School examiner), Sarah (Arnold), Caroline (Yost), Mary, Amanda (Moore), Isabelle (Wilson). Starting a poor boy, by dint and hard labor, Mr. Davidson amassed a large fortune, and throughout life was a peaceful and upright man. Nine years ago he united with the United Brethren Church and since had lived the life of a true and constant Christian. The funeral of the deceased took place Friday morning. Rev. Oliver conducted the services, after which the remains were taken to Mount Ephraim for interment" NOTE #1 Two obits say he was age 16 when he came to OH, one says age 6. NOTE # 2 The 3rd Obit says Jane came from Maryland - it does NOT say she was born there. This might be a clue that this is where the family arrived in the U. S., as we now know that she born in Ireland in 1825.

Obit of AARON MORRIS (SON OF SUSAN COOPER MORRIS HENDERSON) Death Notice of newspaper unknown - Died June 25,1907 "WITH BULLET IN HIS SKULL Body of Aaron W. Morris is found near his home in Pitchin PISTOL IN HIS HAND TELLS SILENT STORY Had left home to visit his mother, but did not get there NO CAUSE IS KNOWN Awful discovery is made by son as latter started to work c Aaron W. Morris, aged 47 years, a farmer living near Pitchin was found dead by the roadside near home at 6 o'clock this morning by his son. A bullet home in his head and a revolver in his hand furnished almost conclusive evidence that he committed suicide. The cause is unknown. He leaves a wife and five children, four sons and a daughter. Started to Visit Mother Last Monday morning Morris left home with the intention of coming to this city to board a train for Noble county to visit his aged mother. Since that time he has not been seen by the members of the family until his son, Aaron M., found the dead body this morning when he was going to his work. The body was laying by the roadside, face downward, with the head against the fence. In the man's right hand was clutched a 38 caliber revolver, and further investigation showed that a bullet had been fired in the right ear. No Reason Known Deputy Coroner McMillan was summoned and went to the scene. The members of the family are unable to give any reason why Mr. Morris should have taken his own life. There as no evidence of domestic trouble and he was in good circumstances financially. Where he had spent the time between Monday evening and last night is unknown. One of the neighbors claims to have heard a pistol shot about 10 o'clock Tuesday night, and it is presumed that this is the time when Morris killed /""""" himself. Air of Mystery An air of mystery surrounds the man's last day on earth and the true reasons for his rash act will probably never be known.
