Ireland is declared as birth place and their ages are estimated for Samuel as b. ca 1786 and Benza as b. ca 1795. Deaths are estimated according to census: Samuel died before 1870 and Benza died after 1880. Records for their first six daughters indicate those girls were born in Ireland - noted on death certificates. Susan the 7th daughter's death certificate shows she was born in Cleveland, Ohio and a later record for Samuel Jr. found his birth was in Union Twp., Noble Co., OH. Records were found by a researcher, Lois Blake, in Caldwell, OH. Further information was found by other descendants of some of the children, and will be so noted in their information. See ******* for contributors. The place in Ireland where this family originated is not known. One descendant says it may have been near or in Dublin but he has no proof, other than family stories. Supposedly, Benza was the grand daughter of the Duke of Rutherford who had a castle 20 Miles outside of Dublin that was destroyed in a 'Catholic Revolution'. However no such duke has ever been found in ANY country. It has been determined that the parents with six children may have come into the United States via Baltimore as Coleen Snyder of New Haven, IN (descended from Jane Cooper) says the family lived there for a time - she c thought her grandmother was born there (see Obits for Joseph Davidson) but census indicates otherwise. But we know the sixth daughter was born in Ireland which would mean the family departed and arrived after June 1831 when Sarah Cooper was born. On census in Brown Co., IN, for daughter, Sarah, in the 1900 census, there is data that she immigrated in 1831. This date was found by a descendant, Tom Moore in Grand Rapids, Ml in his research. It is believed Samuel Sr. was a farmer; and according to later records found in Susan Cooper's files, the mother "Benzy" was an accoucheur or midwife. At least she performed that service for her daughter's Susan's child, Aaron Morris, (the son of Susan's first husband, Apollo Morris). Benza is found with other given names so it is unknown whether "Benza" was a nickname or not. She is found listed as Francis, Jane, Benzie and Benzy. Other than Susan's birth certificate with the information that Cleveland, OH was her birth place, we have found no other record of the family living in Cleveland. The first census found is 1850 in Union Twp., Monroe County (later after 1851, this area became Center Twp., Noble Co., OH). At this time Samuel is listed as age 63 yrs, b. in Ireland and 'Banzey' is age 55 yrs, b. in Ireland. Census of 1850 reads: COOPER Samuel age 63 b. Ireland Banzey age 55 b. Ireland Susanna age 16 b. Ohio Samuel age 13 b. Ohio In the 1860 census Center Twp., Noble Co., OH COOPER Samuel age 74 b. Ire "Betsey" age 65 b. Ire Samuel Jr. age 23 b. OHIO 1870 census Tom Moore found a film for Center Twp., page 49, roll 315B see data under Samuel Cooper Jr. for 1870. At this time "Francis" age 78 is living with her son and family so assume that Samuel Sr. had died by this date. In the 1880 census we find Jane Cooper age 85 years living with her daughter, Jane and son-in-law Joseph Davidson in Center Twp., Noble County. The names of the children were first revealed by Coleen Snyder, when she and her mother went to Caldwell, OH in 1983, and checked out cemetery records and tombstones. In a letter she wrote in 1994, she said she found the c children listed as Louise m. McClintock, Fannie m. Moore, Sarah m. Moore, Rebecca m. Landis, Mary Ann m. George Keller, Susan m.1st to Morris & 2nd to Henderson, Samuel m. Maggie Carter, then Cynthia Wilson (this is WRONG as he was not married to Maggie Carter). Coleen also said that family history noted, "Benza would dance an Irish dance when old and say, 'Oh Lord! forgive me! I know you will do that.".

She died on 08 Oct 1898 in Victor, Teller, Colorado, USA. iii. John C. O'Hara was born in May 1827 in Ireland. iv. Oliver O'Hara was born in 1830 in Ireland. 5. v. Sarah O'Hara was born in 1830 in Northern Ireland. She married Thomas Baxter Pratt on 20 Feb 1856. She died on 24 Aug 1887 in Plainfield, Washington, Vermont, USA (Sheffield Hollow). 6. vi. Margaret O'Hara was born in 1831 in Northern Ireland. She died in 1911.

Robert Jones #75254, b. c. 1780 in County Armagh, Ireland,1,2 occupation Farmer in Hillier Township, d. 30 August 1870 in Hillier Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario,1,2 buried in Christ Church Cemetery, Hillier Township, Prince Edward County, Ontario.2 . The Jones Family Pioneer Life on the Bay of Quinte, 1904; (pages 447 - 452) "Born in the County of Armagh, Ireland, in 1780, of Welsh-Irish parentage, Robert Jones, the pioneer of the Jones family in Prince Edward County, belonged to a class of farmers in Ireland, though heavily handicapped as lease- holders and often rack-rented, have always given a good account of themselves. To Robert was given as good an education as his prospects demanded and the times permitted; and he also received a thoroughly good agricultural training on the family homestead, until he was of age to begin farming on his own account. This he did, at the same time marrying Mary Bell, the daughter of a neighbouring farmer, and of the same age as himself. The farm he chose was cultivated by him for twenty years, during which time all his sons and daughters, to the number of eleven, were born. "His determination to emigrate was not prompted by failure to succeed in farming in Ireland, but rather to the need he felt of securing a much larger holding for himself and his sons, and one that he should hold on better terms.

    Descendants of William Winnett Generation 1 1. WILLIAM1 WINNETT was born about 1650 in Ireland. He died about 1717 in Coghlanstown, Kildare, Ireland. She was born about 1655. She died in 1711 in Coghlanstown, Kildare, Ireland. Notes for William Winnett: William Winnett was probably living in Dublin in 1680 as that is where his son John was born. By 1691 he was at Kilrush, co. Kildare. At this time he leased the lands of Coghlanstown from Sir Robert Colville, for 21 years. He seems to have stayed on, as he was referred to as "of Coghlanstown" at his death. The administration of his will names his son John, and John Nevill of Great Furnace as creditors. William Winnett and Elizabeth had the following children: i. THOMAS2 WINNETT was born about 1675 in Ireland. Notes for Thomas Winnett: The existence of Thomas is surmised. John Winnett is called the second son in documents. It is likely that William Winnett's father was Thomas. 2. ii. JOHN WINNETT was born in 1680 in Dublin, Ireland. He died about 1758 in Ireland. She was born in 1683 in Londonderry, Ireland. She died about 1768 in Co. Dublin, Ireland. 3. iii. WILLIAM WINNIETT was born about 1685 in Ireland. He died in Apr 1741 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He married MARIE-MADELEINE MAISONNAT. She was born in 1695 in Port Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada. She died in 1779 in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada. iv. JOSEPH WINNETT was born about 1688 in Ireland. He died about 1770 in Dublin, Ireland. Notes for Joseph Winnett: Joseph first became a member of the Guild of Merchants in 1709.

The name Woodburn is apparently of Scottish origin. It may come from the Scottish term for a small stream--"burn"; hence, wooded burn or tree-lined stream. Woodburn, then, would have been the name given to people living in such an area. The main connection appears to be with the Ayrshire and Dumfries areas of Scotland. There, a George Woodburn was shot for being a Covenanter (Scottish Presbyterians in the 17th cen. who subscribed to various conservative covenants) in 1685. It was not unusual, however, for people from Scotland, in times of religious persecution, to flee to Ireland and England. Thus, for example, there are a number of Woodburns in Pennington Hall, Ulverston, Cumbria Co., England. There, a Robert Woodburne, in 1654, served as the attorney for George Fox, founder of ther Quakers, in acquiring land for the first Quaker cemetery. In Ireland, Carrickfergus Co. in Northern Ireland has an area and a police station bearing the Woodburn name. Despite these connections to England and Ireland, the original Scottish connection seems indisputable.

I have placed the names in alphabetical order with the page number of the original record following the name of the head of family. The goal of this project was to find three generations of each family - one back from the head of the family and his wife, and the children and their spouses. INTRODUCTION In 1820 in the Calais census there were 61 males between 1 6 -2 6 years living in 64 households. By 1830 there were 399 males between 21 & 30 years living in 225 households.
