3 Translations and Notes

Jubilate Deo (sung in Latin) Hotaru Koi (sung in Japanese) Sing joyfully to God, alleluia Ho, firefly, come, there’s some water that’s bitter Come, here’s some water that’s sweet; Yo Le Canto Todo El Dia (sung in Spanish) Ho, firefly, ho, up this mountain path. So I am moving with my heart, So I am leaving with a drum, Firefly’s daddy struck it rich, he’s got lots of dough, I sing to you all day long with affection and joy, no wonder his rear end sparkles in the dark. So I am leaving with a drum with affection and emotion. Ho, firefly, up this mountain path.

Amavolovolo (sung in Zulu) In the daytime hiding ‘mongst the dewy blades of grass, We won’t go to Kwamashu But when it’s night, his lantern burns bright. We are scared of revolvers e’en though we’ve flown all the way from India, zoom! and those sparrows swarm to swallow us. Originally a song of protest, amavolovolo is now used as a contemporary song of celebration. Ho, firefly, … look! see a thousand lanterns sparkling in the dark, ho, up this mountain path. Panis Angelicus (sung in Latin) —translation David Larson The bread of angels Becomes bread for mankind, An die Musik (sung in German) Heavenly bread gives you lovely art, in how many gray hours, an end to earthly limits Where I was stricken by life O marvelous and wondrous you ignited my heart for warm love, gift of God will nourish you brought me to a better world, The poor, the servants, and the humble Brought me to a better world!

Often a sigh, that left your harp, a sweet, holy chord from you, Has shown me the existence of a better time you lovely art, I thank you for it, you lovely art, I thank you!

Morning Song (sung in ancient Teehahnahmah) I am of the Great Spirit It is so

4 Amazing Grace (sung in Cherokee) Betelehemu (sung in yoruba) God’s son paid for us. We are glad that we have a Father to trust. Then to heaven he went We are glad that we have a Father to rely upon after paying for us. Where was Jesus born? Where was He born? But he said, when he rose. Bethlehem, the city of wonder. I’ll come again That is where the Father was born for sure. He said when he spoke. Praise, praise, praise be to Him. We thank Thee, we thank Thee, we thank Thee for this day, all the earth will end Gracious Father. When he comes Praise, praise, praise be to Thee, all will see him, all over the earth Merciful Father all the good people living Tshotsholoza (sung in Zulu and ndebele) He will come after. Go forward, go forward on these mountains Heaven always in peace they will live The train is coming from South africa you are running away on those mountains Mo-Li-Hua: Jasmine Flower (sung in Chinese) The train is coming from South africa What a beautiful jasmine flower —translation courtesy of Jeffery Ames What a beautiful jasmine flower Sweet-smelling, beautiful, stems full of buds Ave Maria (sung in Latin) Fragrant and white, everyone praises The angel of the Lord announced to Mary Let me pluck you down and she conceived by the Holy Spirit Give to someone else [Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you] Jasmine flower, oh jasmine flower Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus Laudamus Te (sung in Latin) Behold the handmaiden of the Lord We praise you, do to me according to your word. We bless you, [Hail Mary…] We worship you, and the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us We give thanks to you for your great glory. [Hail Mary…] Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and in the hour of our death.
