In the days, weeks, months, and years that followed, there was an outpouring of media reacting to and reflecting on the great loss of life and resulting nuclear contamination of the nearby land and sea of the region. Thematically, food plays a large role in many post-3.11 narratives, both through the damage and recovery of local food systems after the natural disasters and the radiation contamination that to this day stigmatizes regionally grown food. -

Starring Dean Elliot (Paul Simon) and David Tudor (Art Garfunkel), and directed by David Beck, The Simon and Garfunkel Story comes to New Brighton’s Floral Pavilion Theatre on Thursday 3 rd September 2015. The Simon and Garfunkel Story tells the fascinating tale of how two young boys from Queens, New York went on to become the world’s most successful music duo of all time. Starting from their humble beginnings as 50’s Rock n Roll duo ‘Tom & Jerry’, the show takes you through all the songs and stories that shaped them, the dramatic split, their individual solo careers and ending with a stunning recreation of the legendary 1981 Central Park reunion concert. LIPA trained actor and musician Dean Elliott rose to fame in the lead role as Buddy Holly in the West End, Olivier Award nominated musical Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story . In this role he had the honour of opening the 2008 West End Revival at the Duchess Theatre, London and in Buddy’s hometown of Lubbock, Texas before taking the role around Europe and Canada. Other notable theatre work includes Over The Rainbow – The Eva Cassidy Story (UK No1 Tour), Release The Beat (Arcola Theatre, London) and the multi award winning Ed – The Musical (Edinburgh Festival). -

Canadian Beatles Albums Identification Guide Updated: 22 De 16 Type 1 Rainbow Label Capitol Capitol Records of Canada contracted Beatlemania long before their larger and better-known counterpart to the south. Canadian Capitol's superior decision-making brought Beatles records to Canada in early 1963. After experimenting with the release of a few singles, Capitol was eager to release the Beatles' second British album in Canada. Sources differ as to the release date of the LP, but surely by December 2, 1963, Canada's version of With the Beatles became the first North American Beatles album. Capitol-USA and Capitol-Canada were negotiating the consolidation of their releases, but the US release of The Beatles' Second Album had a title and contained songs that were inappropriate for Canadian release. After a third unique Canadian album, album and single releases were unified. From Something New on, releases in the two countries were nearly identical, although Capitol-Canada continued to issue albums in mono only. At the time when Beatlemania With the Beatles came out, most Canadian pop albums were released in the "6000 Series." The label style in 1963 was a rainbow label, similar to the label used in the United States but with print around the rim of the label that read, "Mfd. in Canada by Capitol Records of Canada, Ltd. Registered User. Copyrighted." Course Outline and Syllabus The Fab Four and the Stones: How America surrendered to the advance guard of the British Invasion. This six-week course takes a closer look at the music that inspired these bands, their roots-based influences, and their output of inspired work that was created in the 1960’s. Topics include: The early days, 1960-62: London, Liverpool and Hamburg: Importing rhythm and blues and rockabilly from the States…real rock and roll bands—what a concept! Watch out, world! The heady days of 1963: Don’t look now, but these guys just might be more than great cover bands…and they are becoming very popular…Beatlemania takes off. We can write songs; 1964: the rock and roll band as a creative force. John and Paul, their yin and yang-like personal and musical differences fueling their creative tension, discover that two heads are better than one. The Stones, meanwhile, keep cranking out covers, and plot their conquest of America, one riff at a time. The middle periods, 1965-66: For the boys from Liverpool, waves of brilliant albums that will last forever—every cut a memorable, sing-along winner. While for the Londoners, an artistic breakthrough with their first all--original record. Mick and Keith’s tempestuous relationship pushes away band founder Brian Jones; the Stones are established as a force in the music world. HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora. -

TD Jazz Concerts John Pizzarelli and Freddy Cole: Celebrating the centenary of Nat King Cole @ 100 Thursday, February 14, 2019 at 8:00pm Pre-concert Talk at 7:00pm This is the 913th concert in Koerner Hall John Pizzarelli, vocals & guitar Mike Karn, bass Konrad Paszkudzki, piano Freddy Cole, piano & vocals Elias Bailey, bass Randy Napoleon, guitar Quentin Baxtor, drums John Pizzarelli World-renowned guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli, established as one of the prime contemporary interpreters of the Great American Songbook, has expanded that repertoire by including the music of Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Antônio Carlos Jobim, and The Beatles. Having concentrated on the music of Paul McCartney, Johnny Mercer, and Frank Sinatra over the last two years, Pizzarelli has returned to the bossa nova of Jobim with his 2017 release Sinatra & Jobim @ 50. With co- vocalist Daniel Jobim, grandson of the legendary Brazilian composer, the two explore songs Sinatra and Jobim recorded, as well as add new songs flavoured with the spirit of the classic Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim album. Pizzarelli has toured North America, South America, Asia, and Europe, performing shows centered on Frank Sinatra’s centennial, the songs of Johnny Mercer, and a McCartney program, in which his quartet is joined by strings and a horn section. He also tours on a double bill with pianist Ramsey Lewis. While plenty of jazz greats influenced his work, Nat King Cole has been Pizzarelli’s hero and foundation over the last 25 years. Although they were only together for two years, the band was one of the most influential of its era, earning Rock & Roll Hall of Fame recognition in 1997.After Buffalo Springfield disbanded, Richie and Jimmy Messina formed Poco, a band that was part of the first wave of the West Coast country rock genre and whose unique sound shaped musical styles for years to come. In 1974 Richie left Poco to form the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band and later embarked on a solo career that has spanned four decades. JOHN BATDORF has enjoyed a long and varied career, first rising to national prominence in 1971 as a member of the acoustic folk duo Batdorf & Rodney.
