Jack the Ripper: the Divided Self and the Alien Other in Late-Victorian Culture and Society
Jack the Ripper: The Divided Self and the Alien Other in Late-Victorian Culture and Society Michael Plater Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 18 July 2018 Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines late nineteenth-century public and media representations of the infamous “Jack the Ripper” murders of 1888. Focusing on two of the most popular theories of the day – Jack as exotic “alien” foreigner and Jack as divided British “gentleman” – it contends that these representations drew upon a series of emergent social and cultural anxieties in relation to notions of the “self” and the “other.” Examining the widespread contention that “no Englishman” could have committed the crimes, it explores late-Victorian conceptions of Englishness and documents the way in which the Ripper crimes represented a threat to these dominant notions of British identity and masculinity. In doing so, it argues that late-Victorian fears of the external, foreign “other” ultimately masked deeper anxieties relating to the hidden, unconscious, instinctual self and the “other within.” Moreover, it reveals how these psychological concerns were connected to emergent social anxieties regarding degeneration, atavism and the “beast in man.” As such, it evaluates the wider psychological and sociological impact of the case, arguing that the crimes revealed the deep sense of fracture, duality and instability that lay beneath the surface of late-Victorian English life, undermining and challenging dominant notions of progress, civilisation and social advancement. Situating the Ripper narrative within a broader framework of late-nineteenth century cultural uncertainty and crisis, it therefore argues that the crimes (and, more specifically, populist perceptions of these crimes) represented a key defining moment in British history, serving to condense and consolidate a whole series of late-Victorian fears in relation to selfhood and identity. -

The Effects of Digital Music Distribution" (2012)
Southern Illinois University Carbondale OpenSIUC Research Papers Graduate School Spring 4-5-2012 The ffecE ts of Digital Music Distribution Rama A. Dechsakda [email protected] Follow this and additional works at: http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/gs_rp The er search paper was a study of how digital music distribution has affected the music industry by researching different views and aspects. I believe this topic was vital to research because it give us insight on were the music industry is headed in the future. Two main research questions proposed were; “How is digital music distribution affecting the music industry?” and “In what way does the piracy industry affect the digital music industry?” The methodology used for this research was performing case studies, researching prospective and retrospective data, and analyzing sales figures and graphs. Case studies were performed on one independent artist and two major artists whom changed the digital music industry in different ways. Another pair of case studies were performed on an independent label and a major label on how changes of the digital music industry effected their business model and how piracy effected those new business models as well. I analyzed sales figures and graphs of digital music sales and physical sales to show the differences in the formats. I researched prospective data on how consumers adjusted to the digital music advancements and how piracy industry has affected them. Last I concluded all the data found during this research to show that digital music distribution is growing and could possibly be the dominant format for obtaining music, and the battle with piracy will be an ongoing process that will be hard to end anytime soon. -

I Still Believe
I still believe I still believe was first recorded by Bunny DeBarge in 1986. A year later, Chrysalis artist Brenda K. Starr also recorded a version of the song, who just happened to be employing a back-up singer 0351 5” CD-Single from Austria named Mariah Carey at the time. In 1998, Mariah recorded her own SAMPCS 6452 promo in slimline jewelcase version for her compilation album #1’s. Love, Mariah.” On January 5, 2001, Kathi Pinto, a songwriter from California, filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in United States District Court for the Central District of California over the single. Kathi alleges in the suit that she co-wrote a song entitled I still believe in 1981, which was sold to music publisher Galen Senogles at Simple Song Music that same year. As the song switched hands among various publish- 0986 5” CD-Single from Austria SAMPCS 666781-8 ers and record execs over the years through Pinto’s desire for a re- promo without sleeve cording contract, it eventually ended up in the hands of Tom Sturges at Chrysalis Records around 1985. Sturges allegedly helped pen a Tracklisting: tune called I still believe with Antonina Armato and Beppe Canarelli. -

Forestry Training Centre Incorporated
FORESTRY TRAINING CENTRE INCORPORATED MANUAL ON INTRODUCTION TO FOREST ROADS And Considerations for Reduced Impact Logging ©Tropical Forest Foundation February 2010. Introduction to Forest Roads And Considerations for Reduced Impact Logging FTCI February 2010 Foreword The renewable nature of forests can be conserved indefinitely provided stakeholders act responsibly their interventions in forest resources. One vital and critical aspect of forest management, whatever the objective of management, is the construction of roads and trails. The harvesting of timber in particular leads to a higher density of roads (km/ha) and in addition skid trails at the rate of about 1- 2.5km/100ha; roads are essential for conveying production inputs (machines, fuel, rations, logging rigs, personnel) to the areas targeted for harvesting, for the removal of logs from forest concessions to processing locations, and for concession monitoring purposes. Poor road design and road construction lead to higher truck maintenance costs and deterioration of logs in transit. Roads are therefore intrinsically linked to the viability of forest enterprises. Good roads also reflect environmental responsibility. This manual is for loggers. Its intention is to sensitise loggers to the key considerations guiding road location, road construction and road maintenance within the context of reduced impact logging. a) It does not in any way attempt to replace the excellent manuals on roads available in stores and on the internet. This manual does not attempt in any way to detract from standard engineering criteria for road location and construction. The objectives of the manual are to: provide loggers with enough information in a simple format to encourage the logger into taking road construction and maintenance more seriously; b) help the logger identify any specific problems and to seek expert technical assistance as required; c) help logger articulate their road construction and road maintenance plans within their forest management plans and their annual plans of operations. -
