An array of sociological studies has found that adolescents openly acknowledge homophobic justification for past verbal harassment and abuse, and masculinity studies associate this abuse with affirming a normative masculinity. This study seeks to determine what conditions could contribute to the social production of such endemic violence and simultaneously preserve a pervasive silence about its social origins.

“Sounds of Silence”--Simon and Garfunkel (1966) Added to the National Registry: 2012 Essay by Daniel Levitin (guest post)* Album cover Label Simon and Garfunkel “Sounds of Silence” is the second studio album by Simon and Garfunkel, and it weaves together threads of their earlier studio album “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.” with Paul Simon's first solo album “The Paul Simon Songbook.” The album was released on January 17, 1966, with recording taking place in 1964 and 1965, years during which the United States was beginning to see growing distrust of government and conventional authority. Young people and members of the counterculture saw in a new breed of singer-songwriter role models, truth-tellers and prophets, and they hung on every word. In the years following this release, Paul Simon became one of the most inventive and highly regarded songwriters of the last 60 years, with a truly international following. But the inclusion of this record in the Library of Congress' National Registry was not because its author became the Paul Simon we know from “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Graceland,” or “Stranger to Stranger,” but because it stands on its own. If Simon and Garfunkel had never made another record, this album would still hold a privileged place in our national hearts and minds. To say that it captured a moment is too pat and too cliché--it captured a generation, it gave voice to the bubbling cauldron of anger, suspicion, loneliness (:in restless dreams I walk alone”) and disconnection (“I am a rock, I am an island”) felt by what would become known as the Woodstock generation.

PHOTO REALIST Alfredo Jaar’s provocative work begins with photography, but rarely ends there. The Chilean- born artist talks to Apollo about the danger of taking images at face value By Robert Barry n Thursday morning, August 25, 1994, I entered the Rubavu Refugee Camp near Gysenyi in Rwanda O as school was about to begin.’ These words, written by Alfredo Jaar, have been laser-cut in a small, sans-serif type into a false wall dividing the lower-ground level at the Goodman Gallery in Mayfair. From behind the partition light streams through the words. ‘As I approached the make-shift school, children gathered around me. I smiled at them and some smiled back. Three children, Nduway- ezu, Dusabe and Umotoni, were seated on the steps in front of the school door. Nduwayezu, five, the oldest of the three, was the only one that looked directly at my camera.’ Nduwayezu was one of countless children orphaned by the Hutu-led genocide of 1994, a massacre thought to have ended somewhere between 500,000 and a million lives. Arriving at Rubavu not long before Jaar’s visit, Ndu- wayezu, one of 37 such orphans at the camp, wouldn’t say a word. He remained mute for four full weeks. ‘I remem- ber his eyes,’ Jaar’s text continues. ‘And I will never forget his silence.’ Behind the partition, a table 18-foot long and 12-foot wide is piled high with a million photographic slides. Each slide is identical: the eyes of Nduwayezu staring back at us, the eyes that met Jaar’s camera lens in 1994 and that have haunted him ever since.

The Sound of Silence
The Sound of Silence. "The Sound of Silence" is the song that propelled the 1960s folk music duo Simon & Garfunkel to popularity. It was written in February 1964 by Paul Simon in the aftermath of the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy. An initial version preferred by the band was remixed and sweetened, and has become known as "quintessential folk rock release". In the U.S., it was the duo's second most popular hit after "Bridge Over Troubled Water". The song features Simon on acoustic guitar and both singing. It was originally recorded as an acoustic piece for their first album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. in 1964 but on the initiative of the record company's producer, Tom Wilson, it was later overdubbed with drums, electric bass and electric guitar, all without the knowledge or participation of Simon & Garfunkel and rereleased as a single in September 1965. The single reached number one on New Year's Day 1966 and was included in the 1966 album Sounds of Silence.
