Live Among the White Trash: A history of nono----manman on stage “There are no No-Man concerts scheduled for the foreseeable future.” (from the official no-man website) Anyone who has followed no-man’s career over the previous ten years or so will be acutely aware that the band does not play live. If no-man “exist” as a band at all – and their infrequent releases mean they are more an ongoing understanding between two men rather than an active unit – it is only in the studio. Over a series of uncompromising albums no-man’s music has become ever more complex, yet ironically, “live sounding” than the release which proceeded it. But this organic “liveness” is mainly an illusion; the feeling of spontaneity often the result of numerous edits and takes which only the precision of studio work can produce. Others have tried to perform equally difficult music live: Radiohead ambitiously thrusting their clicks-and- cuts post-rock upon the world’s stadiums, for example. But for a variety of reasons, no-man simply haven’t tried – at least, not since 1994 and not until a one-off performance in 2006. The only comparable case is Talk Talk’s retreat into the studio in the late 1980s. Both bands have undoubtedly crafted their best work without going near an audience. 1 But it wasn’t always so. no-man were once very much a live act, promoting singles and albums with dates and undertaking two full-blown tours – though they rarely played outside London, never went further north than Newcastle, and never played outside Great Britain. -

Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers. -

The Inspiration behind Compositions for Clarinetist Frederick Thurston. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2018, 86 pp., references, 51 titles. Frederick Thurston was a prominent British clarinet performer and teacher in the first half of the 20th century. Due to the brevity of his life and the impact of two world wars, Thurston’s legacy is often overlooked among clarinetists in the United States. Thurston’s playing inspired 19 composers to write 22 solo and chamber works for him, none of which he personally commissioned. The purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive biography of Thurston’s career as clarinet performer and teacher with a complete bibliography of compositions written for him. With biographical knowledge and access to the few extant recordings of Thurston’s playing, clarinetists may gain a fuller understanding of Thurston’s ideal clarinet sound and musical ideas. These resources are necessary in order to recognize the qualities about his playing that inspired composers to write for him and to perform these works with the composers’ inspiration in mind. Despite the vast list of works written for and dedicated to Thurston, clarinet players in the United States are not familiar with many of these works, and available resources do not include a complete listing. -

It consists of a humorous 24-minute show and educator’s package. The Orion Educator’s Guide is designed for Planetarians, Teachers, and parents. The information is researched, organized, and laid out so that the educator need not spend hours coming up with lesson plans or labs. This has already been accomplished by certified educators. The guide is written to alleviate the fear of space and the night sky (that many elementary and middle school teachers have) when it comes to that section of the science lesson plan. It is an excellent tool that allows the parents to be a part of the learning experience. The guide is devised in such a way that there are plenty of visuals to assist the educator and student in finding the Winter constellations. -

Half of the material here is not only previously unreleased - it had never been heard, even by the most dedicated collectors of Wyatt rarities. Until reappearing, seemingly out of nowhere, last year, the demo for “Rivmic Melodies”, an extended sequence of song fragments destined to form the first side of the second album by Soft Machine (the band Wyatt had helped form in 1966 as drummer and lead vocalist, and with whom he had recorded an as-yet unreleased debut album in New York the previous spring), was presumed lost forever. As for the shorter song discovered on the same acetate, “Chelsa”, it wasn't even known to exist! This music was conceived by Wyatt while off the road during and after Soft Machine's second tour of the US with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, first in New York City during the summer of 1968, then in the fall of that year while staying at the Experience's rented house in California, where he was granted free access to the TTG recording facility during studio downtime. -

Rosemary Conchita Lucadou-Wells ABSTRACT This research focuses on the development of the jurisprudence of the infant colony of Van Diemen’s Land now known as Tasmania, with particular interest on the law of defamation. During the first thirty years of this British penal colony its population was subject to changes. There were the soldiery, who provided the basis of government headed by a Lieutenant Governor, the indigenous people, the convicts, and gradually an influx of settlers who came enthused by governmental promises of grants of land. In addition to these free settlers there were a selection of convicts who, under a process of something akin to manumission under Roman Law, became upon completion of their sentence, eligible for freedom and possibly a grant of land. There developed a spirit of competition amongst the settlers, each wanted to become more successful than the others. The favourite means of distinguishing oneself was the uttering or publication of damaging words against a person who was perceived to be a rival. -

Deadly Weapons, réalisé l'année d'après, est la suite naturelle de ce concert remarqué. Steve Beresford, lui, est un des piliers de la maison ; avec Deadly Weapons, il synthétise ses éclectiques et fourmillantes approches en un seul projet. David Toop a déjà enregistré pour nato avec le groupe Alterations et participé à l'album de son compère Steve Beresford : Dancing the Line Anne Marie Beretta. Tous trois sont d'incorrigibles cinéphiles. Tonie Marshall est alors actrice, et quelle actrice ! Elle va bientôt passer de l'autre côté de la caméra et devenir une cinéaste de premier plan. Deadly Weapons est un disque-film comme les affectionne particulièrement la maison du chat. Il joue sur différents plans et s'en joue. Champ et hors-champ. Lors de sa sortie, il divise : le livret rappelle comment s’offusquèrent les puristes et comment se réjouirent les autres ! Si Deadly Weapons, premier album londonien de nato, ouvre bel et bien la marche (toujours randonneuse) de ce qui va suivre, il s'inscrit assez logiquement dans ce qui a précédé en affichant des libertés nouvelles et sa passion des images sans masques. -

To this end, Echtner & Ritchie’s model (1991) is applied; however, compared to its original formulation, it is implemented with greater consideration of the experiential dimension and potential travel constraints affecting the perception of the range of tourism goods and services on offer. This enables not just a denotative, but also and above all a connotative measurement of the image, thereby reducing the risk of ambiguity in the interpretation of the most significant attributes that emerged during the analysis. Adopting a hypothetical segmentation of the market in question, it was also possible to the elements that act as encouraging and discouraging factors regarding a holiday in Italy are highlight, identifying tailor-made approaches to the construction and promotion/commercialisation of tourism products designed to be attractive to the specific segment of interest. -

Pagini - 88 EDITURA EVOMIND 1 Cuvânt înainte Cartea Teaching English Through Songs, semnată de dna Simona-Adriana Butuc, tratează o temă relevantă pentru didactica predării limbii engleze, fiind astfel de real interes pentru toţi profesorii din domeniu, indiferent de nivelul elevilor acestora, dar şi pentru profesori de alte specialităţi, care pot adapta tema la specificul domeniului. Adunând laolaltă diverse aspecte ale folosirii cântecelor în predare, cartea contribuie din plin la îmbogăţirea şi dezvoltarea domeniului didactic. Lucrarea are o structură unitară şi coerentă, stabilind nişte jaloane teoretice (problema implicaţiei psihologie a cântecelor, motive pentru folosirea cântecelor la clasă, când, cum şi ce fel de cântece trebuie folosite la clasă) şi exemplificând apoi cu tipuri de activităţi creative care se pot folosi pornind de la cântece şi adaptarea lor la diverse aspecte lingvistice cuprinse în programă. Din punct de vedere al conţinutului şi mărimii, capitolele sunt echilibrate şi structurate logic, titlul lucrării şi titlurile capitolelor fiind în acord cu conţinutul întregii lucrări, respectiv a fiecărui capitol în parte. 2 Aspectele abordate de autoare se bucură de o mare actualitate, dată fiind tendinţa actuală de predare prin centrarea pe elev, atragerea lui spre învăţare prin aplecare spre interesele acestuia, iar cadrul teoretic prezentat este în concordanţă cu exemplele practice. De asemenea, atât aspectele teoretice, cât şi cele practice sunt clare, concise şi organizate raţional, iar conceptele şi termenii folosiţi pe parcursul lucrării sunt utilizaţi corect şi cu discernământ. Sursele sunt citate corect atât în text, cât şi în bibliografia finală a lucrării, ele fiind de actualitate şi relevante pentru tema aleasă.
