NATIONAL GALLERY OF IRELAND The National Gallery of Ireland was founded by an Act of Parliament in 1854 and opened to the public in 1864. It houses some 13,000 items: over 2,500 oil paintings, and 10,000 works in different media including watercolours, drawings, prints and sculpture. The works range in date from the fourteenth century to the present day and broadly represent the development of the major European schools of painting: British, Dutch, Flemish, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Netherlands, complemented by a comprehensive collection of Irish art. -

JACK B. YEATS Biography 1871 August 29, Jack Butler Yeats born at 23 Fitzroy Road, London, son of John Butler Yeats, artist, and Susan Pollexfen of Sligo 1879 Went to Sligo to live with his grandparents, William and Elizabeth Pollexfen. He went to school there, and stayed with them until 1887 1887 Rejoined his family in London in order to attend art school. His grandmother was strongly in favour of him following a career as an artist. Attended classes at South Kensington School of Art, Chiswick School of Art, Westminster School of Art. Season ticket for the American Exhibition at Earls Court, starring Buffalo Bill 1888 First black and white illustrations accepted for publication in The Vegetarian in April 1891 Illustrating for Ariel and Paddock Life . First book illustrations 1892 Designing posters for David Allen & Sons in Manchester. Illustrated Irish Fairy Tales by his brother W.B.Yeats 1894 Staff Artist on Lika Joko. In August he married Mary Cottenham White, who had been a student with him in Chiswick, and was eight years older that Jack. They rented a house called 'The Chestnuts' on the River Thames, at Chertsey 1895 First exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, a watercolour called Strand Races, West of Ireland 1897 Moved to Strete, Devon to live at 'Snail's Castle' (Cashlauna Shelmiddy). Began to concentrate on watercolour painting. Painted his first oil. First one-man show of watercolours in November, at the Clifford Gallery, Haymarket 1898 Jack and Cottie visited Northern Italy, on what seems to have been a belated honeymoon, combined with a celebration of the success of his first solo exhibition the previous year. -

Kate Flint 1 How Do We See? Kate Flint, Provost Professor of Art History and English (University of Southern California, USA) How do we see? And how do we learn to see? These two questions, despite being highly similar, are far from identical. An increasing number of mid-Victorian commentators, who considered the act of looKing from the entwined perspectives of science and culture, investigated them. They explored and explained connections between the physiology and psychology of vision; the relationship between looking, attention, and ocular selection; and the variations in modes of seeing that come about through occupation, environment, and the spaces of sight. These, too, are the issues at the heart of the stimulating essays in this issue of Victorian Network. In 1871, the journalist Richard Hengist Horne brought out a strangely hybrid volume: The Poor Artist; or, Seven Eye-Sights and One Object. The narrative of a struggling painter, first published in 1850, was now prefaced by a ‘Preliminary Essay. On Varieties of Vision in Man.’ Horne acknowledges that the passages strung together into the essay ‘have been jotted down at various intervals, and in various parts of the globe’.1 Indeed, they constitute a collection of musings on the subject rather than a sustained argument, as though Horne’s own attention was incapable of resting steadily on a designated object. But he also recognizes that the variety of examples and exceptions he discusses precludes arriving at any firm generaliZations concerning the act of visualiZation – apart from the fact that we may extend the principle of variety in vision to the other senses. -

The resulting paper was completed with the support of a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship within the 7th European Community Framework Program. Thanks go to Natalia Banulescu-Bogdan and Kate Hooper from the Migration Policy Institute for their insightful comments on earlier drafts. This research was commissioned by the Transatlantic Council on Migration, an initiative of the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), for its twelfth plenary meeting, held in Lisbon. The meeting’s theme was “Rethinking Emigration: A Lost Generation or a New Era of Mobility?” and this paper was one of the reports that informed the Council’s discussions. The Council is a unique deliberative body that examines vital policy issues and informs migration policymaking processes in North America and Europe. The Council’s work is generously supported by the following foundations and governments: Open Society Foundations, Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Barrow Cadbury Trust, the Luso- American Development Foundation, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and the governments of Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. -

These are the people, along with other departments, who work at, and have been at, the coal face of the Irish Film and Television industry for many years. -

It consists of a humorous 24-minute show and educator’s package. The Orion Educator’s Guide is designed for Planetarians, Teachers, and parents. The information is researched, organized, and laid out so that the educator need not spend hours coming up with lesson plans or labs. This has already been accomplished by certified educators. The guide is written to alleviate the fear of space and the night sky (that many elementary and middle school teachers have) when it comes to that section of the science lesson plan. It is an excellent tool that allows the parents to be a part of the learning experience. Reputations on the Line in Van Diemen's Land
REPUTATIONS ON THE LINE IN VAN DIEMEN’S LAND: a dissertation on the general theme of the Rule of Law as it emerged in a young penal colony with particular emphasis on the law of defamation by ROSEMARY CONCHITA LUCADOU-WELLS LLB., (Queensland), B.Ed., (Tasmania), MA., (Murdoch), PhD., (Deakin) This thesis is presented for the degree of Master of Laws of Murdoch University, 2012. I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. Rosemary Conchita Lucadou-Wells ABSTRACT This research focuses on the development of the jurisprudence of the infant colony of Van Diemen’s Land now known as Tasmania, with particular interest on the law of defamation. During the first thirty years of this British penal colony its population was subject to changes. There were the soldiery, who provided the basis of government headed by a Lieutenant Governor, the indigenous people, the convicts, and gradually an influx of settlers who came enthused by governmental promises of grants of land. In addition to these free settlers there were a selection of convicts who, under a process of something akin to manumission under Roman Law, became upon completion of their sentence, eligible for freedom and possibly a grant of land. There developed a spirit of competition amongst the settlers, each wanted to become more successful than the others. The favourite means of distinguishing oneself was the uttering or publication of damaging words against a person who was perceived to be a rival.
