1 The Society of The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick is a private organization dedicated to the principles of brotherhood, charity and community service. Since the founding of the Cincinnati chapter in 1868, the society has maintained a tradition of openness to Irish as well as non-Irish men of goodwill, without regard to ethnic or religious origin.

There were two predecessors to the Cincinnati Society - Philadelphia, founded in 1771 and New York, founded in 1784.

With God’s blessing we look forward to another century of fraternity and service.

5 History of the Shiels Family

“The Irish surname Shiels allegedly originates from the counties Antrim, Derry, Donegal, and Down. The Gaelic form is O’Siadhail usually Anglicized in it’s present form Shiel, Sheils, Shields and Sheilds. Although claiming descent from the legendary and much feared High King Niall of the Nine Hostages, the O’Shiels were known as a family of hereditary physicians rather than a territorial sept. The most famous was Murtagh O’Shiel who was physician to MacCoughlan.”

My Great-grandfather, Hugh Shiels, arrived in the United Sates from Roscommon in 1850. Little is known when he made his way and what he did in Cincinnati until the outbreak of the Civil War when he volunteered in 1861 in the 67th Ohio Regiment. Hugh rose to the rank of Captain during the war and completed his service in 1864. Hugh and his wife, Mary, had two sons Charles F. and Joseph E. Upon his return to Cincinnati the assumption is he worked in the lumber trade. In the 1870 Williams Cincinnati Directory he is listed as a manufacturer of veneer and cabinet maker’s lumber. Hugh left Cincinnati in 1888 moving to California and getting into the sawmill business for several firms and then eventually for himself. He retired and died in San Diego in 1902.

My Grandfather, Charles F. Shiels, after working in the lumber trade in Cincinnati for several decades, started his own lumber business, Charles F. Shiels & Company, in 1891. His brother, Joseph, went to work for Charles shortly after the company was formed and worked there until he passed away in 1928. Charles married Ida Shrimpton and had eight children: Helen, Charles Jr., Alfred, Paul, William Eugene (S.J.), Mary Alice, then in 1910 had twins Elaine (Foley) and my father, Richard. After attending the University of Notre Dame, and then working for a number of years and becoming the Assistant Sawmill Manager for Potlatch Forests, Inc. in Lewiston, Idaho “Dick” returned to Cincinnati at the behest of his father in 1936 . Charles F. Shiels died in 1945 and his son, Paul, assumed ownership of the business. When Paul died in 1950 Richard bought the business from Paul’s widow, Frieda.

6 “Dick” married Marjorie DuBrul, the eighth of eleven children of Ernest F. and Anna McKenzie DuBrul, in 1939 and raised a family of eleven children: Patricia L. Carr, Hugh I. M.D., Mary C. McCarty, Elizabeth M. (Ph.D.), Frances A. Eagen, Daniel R., Marc F., Regina M. Davis, William Eugene II D.O., (deceased), Janet C. Nelson, and Martha A. Summa. The tradition of the Shiels being physicians was not lost as you can see.

Richard’s untimely death in 1968 at the age of 58 forced Marjorie, who had eight children living at home at the time, to take over the lumber business which she ran for twenty years. During those twenty years sons Dan and Marc worked in the business and a smooth transition followed in 1988. Dan left the company in 2010. I purchased Dan’s half of the company and am running it today in it’s 128th year of operation. I married Leslie Glass in 1983 and we currently reside in Cincinnati.

I graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1973 after being a founding member and instrumental (first President) in the formation of the University of Cincinnati Rugby Football Club in 1971 which led me to also being one of the founding members (first Club Captain) of the Cincinnati Rugby Football Club in 1974. My affiliation with the club continues to this day. I was a player coach (backs) for six years then my coaching career culminated in serving as the Head Coach (1989-1999) and taking the club to it’s first USA Rugby National Championship competition in 1996. After a year-long hiatus I was called back to coaching by the University of Cincinnati Rugby Football Club which I coached (2000-2006) until my old friend and rugby mate, Mike Barrett, took over the reins.

I first became aware of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick when my former rugby coach, G.J.P. Mulvany, called me in late 1984 and said, “we’re starting a glee club, and you’re in!” I joined and have been a part of the growth and development of the glee club since it’s inception. I served on the Board of the Friendly Sons Foundation for two years while Kevin Connor was President. Patrick Lindsay encouraged me to run for President of the Society and I am fortunate to have the honor to serve for the 150th Anniversary of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Cincinnati. “God bless.”

He was recognized by friend and foe alike as one of the hardest working TD’s in Dail Eireann. In the late 1980’s he visited Capitol Hill on a number of occasions lobbying for Immigration Reform because of the large number of undocumented Irish in the USA at that time. 17 150 Years of Sumptuous Repasts - A Grand Tradition

What a history! For 150 years the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati have celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a banquet, a grand tradition of grand affairs. Sumptuous Repasts At the first banquet, on March 17, 1869 at the St. Nicholas Hotel, the Friendly Sons started with a “sumptuous repast” in the 2004 words of our late Historian Robert E. Manley. The tradition of “sumptuous repasts” has carried on over the century and a half since. In 1881, for example, at the Grand Hotel the menu offered three oyster presentations, Kennebec salmon, sweetbreads, filet of beef and diamondback terrapin. In 1909, at the Hotel Dwlin, the menu featured medallions of black bass Venitienne and filet mignon a l’Irlandaise, as well as Bushmills, martinis, sherry, sauternes, champagne and crème de menthe. And in 1912 at the Business Men’s Club, the Friendly Sons feasted on medallion pompano a la Dublin and ris de veau braisé Killarney. Those 1909 and 1912 menus were almost completely in French, attesting to the elegance of the occasions. Nothing but the best for the Friendly Sons! With few exceptions, our brethren have dined well over the decades of banquets. As early as the Centennial banquet in 1968, the menu began to settle into a steady diet of salad, filet of beef, some form of potatoes, a vegetable side of asparagus, green beans or broccoli, and a fancy dessert like raspberry napoleon or pistachio mouse tart. The lads have exhibited a clear preference for, and expectation of, a really good steak, along with a sip of champagne, of course. The use of the French language in the menus persisted into the early 2000s, in combination with English. In 2005, in the Presidency of Michael K. Keating, Irish supplanted French. Henceforth, the menus have spoken in both Irish and English. Toasts and Speakers From the very outset, toasts have been a fixture of the banquets. Seven toasts were raised at the first banquet, including to the President of the United States (a tradition we carry on to this day), the United States itself, the City of Cincinnati, the Friendly Sons and the Army and the Navy. The last toast bespeaks the patriotic side of the Friendly Sons from their inception in Philadelphia in 1771.

18 The Cincinnati banquets from the beginning also have presented a run of luminaries at the dais, including a U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, an Irish Ambassador, military Generals and Admirals, entertainers such as Nick Clooney, newsmen, and professional baseball, football and golf standouts. Perhaps the 50th Anniversary Banquet in 1918 at the Hotel Sinton boasted the greatest set of luminaries: former Cincinnati Mayor Edward J. Dempsey, former U.S. President Wm. Howard Taft, Major General E.D. Swinton, Emissary of Great Britain and inventor of the Tank, Maurice Casenave, Plenipotentiary Minister and Financial Councillor to the French High Commission, and James M. Cox, Governor of Ohio. The banquet’s timing during World War I was reflected not only by some of the speakers but by the music. Songs included “The Red, White and Blue,” “Keep the Home Fires Burning,” “Over There,” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The 1944 banquet at the Netherlands Plaza Hotel also reflected its wartime environment. One toast was “A Salute to our Sons.” The Guests of Honor were five Senior Officers from the Army, Navy and Marine Corps and the program contained a two-page Honor Roll of active duty servicemen, some or all of whom were Friendly Sons. A third memorable banquet was the 100th Anniversary celebration on March 17, 1968 at the Netherland Hilton Hotel. Like the 50th Anniversary Banquet in 1918, the dais held a blue-ribbon list of speakers: Cincinnati Mayor Eugene P. Ruehlmann, Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes and Brendan Corish, Member of the Dáil Éireann, Wexford, Ireland. Music Music from time immemorial has been a standard feature of the banquets, mainly a mix of Irish and patriotic songs. “Danny Boy” has been a favorite. There’s also a long tradition of the Friendly Sons singing the U.S. and Irish National Anthems, “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “The Soldier’s Song.” One of the greatest traditions of the banquets is a performance by the Glee Club of the Friendly Sons of the St. Patrick in Cincinnati, organized in late 1984. This year marks its 34th annual banquet performance. Its dozens of members truly love the Irish tunes they sing. They represent the Society well as they perform each year at nursing home, hospitals and other civic, religious and cultural events, including funerals of the Society’s members. In 2014, the Glee Club sang in Dublin, Ireland, in the presence of Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland, and his wife Sabina, and at five other concerts in Ireland.

19 Banquet Programs Another lasting tradition of the annual banquets has been the production of a banquet program, usually bound in hard cover. The content of the programs has varied over the years. The 1912 program featured a gallery of black and white photos of Irish historic sites, such as Celtic carvings and crosses, beehive houses, round towers, the Rock of Cashel, Clonmacnoise and Blarney Castle. The 1927 program presented a chronological Irish history. In recent decades the programs have contained the current Society President’s family history, obituaries of recently deceased members of the Society, historical pieces by our Historians and pages on the Friendly Sons Glee Club and, beginning with its formation in 2002, the Friendly Sons Foundation. Traditions As one can readily see, the Society has generated and maintained many lasting traditions over the years with respect to the banquets. It goes without saying that one of the lasting traditions has been the nature of its attendees. An intrepid lady in January wrote in the Wall Street Journal an endorsement of all-male activities. “This, “she said, “is a country with a history of brave, talented and good men. Let them be men.” For one evening each year, the ladies of our lives have graciously straightened our bow ties and sent us forth to the banquets in black tie, as men to be men. To those ladies we raise our grateful toasts. Finally, the maintenance of our traditions is attributable in no small part to the passing down of the Society from generation to generation, from dads to sons to grandsons. That’s epitomized by our Past Presidents list alone, with names like Fitzgerald, Gilligan, Williams, Sweeny, Powell, Finn, Roche, Castellini, Dammarell, Keating, Carr, McKenna, Clarke, Croskery and Lindsay. A toast is overdue to those families and the many others that have long maintained the traditions of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in Cincinnati. Edmund Adams Historian

“Oh, Ireland is the merry place where heads And hearts are young. How many a wayside dance is there, how many a song is sung; ‘Tis there the wildest music is and there the maddest mirth, And oh, ‘tis there’s the softest speech was ever Heard on earth.”

- Denis A. McCarthy

27 28 Where is Ireland? o latitude or longitude Can bound the Emerald Isle. You’ll find it off in Timbuktu Or down along the Nile.

Wherever mothers stoop to smooth A baby’s touseled hair And croon an Irish lullabye— Ireland is there!

Wherever men are brave and true And quick to take a stand And proud to fight, if fight they must— There is Ireland!

Wherever lad and lassie meet A merry dance to share, (Oh, echoes of the Blarney Stone!) Ireland is there!

29 Requiescat in pace

May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Timothy A. Garry, Sr., (1936 – 2017). Tim was a proud member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. Having sung baritone with the Xavier University Clef Club from 1953-1957, Tim was delighted to sing baritone in the Friendly Sons Glee Club for several years, straddling the illness and death of his wife, Susan Rains Garry in 2007, including some years singing with his sons, Tim Jr. and Brian C. Garry. He enjoyed the annual banquets during the decades that he was a member of the Society, as a way to celebrate his Irish-American heritage, the opportunities and blessings which he had received, and to visit with family and old friends. Tim practiced law with Keating, Muething & Klekamp for more than 50 years. Tim served on Cincinnati City Council and as President of the Cincinnati Bar Association. 33 The Star Spangled Banner (National Anthem of the United States of America) Oh, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? Francis Scott Key

The Soldier's Song (Irish National Anthem) We’ll sing a song, a soldier’s song. With cheering, rousing chorus. As round our blazing fires we throng. The starry heavens o’er us; Impatient for the coming fight. And as we wait in the morning’s light, Here in the silence of the night. We’ll chant a soldier’s song. Chorus Soldiers are we, whose lives are pledged to Ireland; Some have come from a land beyond the wave; Sworn to be free, no more our ancient sireland Shall shelter the despot or the slave. Tonight we man the Bearna Boaghail. In Erin’s cause, come woe or weal. ‘Mid cannon’s roar and rifle’s peal, We’ll chant a soldier’s song. Peadar O’Cearnaigh

34 35 Though the last glimpse of Erin with sorrow I see, Yet wherever thou art shall seem Erin to me; In exile thy bosom shall still be my home, And thine eyes make my climate wherever we roam.

To the gloom of some desert or cold rocky shore, Where the eye of the stranger can haunt us no more, I will fly with my Coulin, and think the rough wind Less rude than the foes we leave frowning behind.

And I’ll gaze on thy gold hair as graceful it wreathes, And hang o’er thy soft harp as wildly it breathes; Nor dread that the cold hearted Saxon will tear One chord from that harp, or one lock from that hair.

- Thomas Moore

“Wreath the bowl With flowers of soul The brightest wit can find us We’ll take flight Towards Heaven tonight And leave dull earth behind us”

- Thomas Moore

36 ave you ever been to Ireland

With its rolling hills so green? Glue here to back of book Sure ‘n it’s the fairest land

That ever has been seen

And those green hills of Ireland

May be very far away

But they’re close to every Irish heart

No matter what the day. 1868 - 2018 1868 Music Hall Hall Music March 17, March 2018 THE SOCIETY OF THE SOCIETY OF THE FRIENDLY SONS OF ST. PATRICK SONS OF ST. THE FRIENDLY SESQUICENTENNIAL BANQUET SESQUICENTENNIAL
