Since the founding of the Cincinnati chapter in 1868, the society has maintained a tradition of openness to Irish as well as non-Irish men of goodwill, without regard to ethnic or religious origin. There were two predecessors to the Cincinnati Society - Philadelphia, founded in 1771 and New York, founded in 1784. With God’s blessing we look forward to another century of fraternity and service. 2 George A. Doherty First President of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in the City of Cincinnati 1868 “The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick - We meet tonight unshackled by sectarianism untrammeled by politics” Dr. George A. Doherty First Banquet, St. Nicolas Hotel March 17th, 1869 3 "A Society distinguished for the firm adherence of its Members to the glorious cause in which we are embarked" - Gen. George Washington 4 Marc f. Shiels President 5 History of the Shiels Family “The Irish surname Shiels allegedly originates from the counties Antrim, Derry, Donegal, and Down. The Gaelic form is O’Siadhail usually Anglicized in it’s present form Shiel, Sheils, Shields and Sheilds. Although claiming descent from the legendary and much feared High King Niall of the Nine Hostages, the O’Shiels were known as a family of hereditary physicians rather than a territorial sept. The most famous was Murtagh O’Shiel who was physician to MacCoughlan.” My Great-grandfather, Hugh Shiels, arrived in the United Sates from Roscommon in 1850. Little is known when he made his way and what he did in Cincinnati until the outbreak of the Civil War when he volunteered in 1861 in the 67th Ohio Regiment. Hugh rose to the rank of Captain during the war and completed his service in 1864. Hugh and his wife, Mary, had two sons Charles F. and Joseph E. Upon his return to Cincinnati the assumption is he worked in the lumber trade. In the 1870 Williams Cincinnati Directory he is listed as a manufacturer of veneer and cabinet maker’s lumber. Hugh left Cincinnati in 1888 moving to California and getting into the sawmill business for several firms and then eventually for himself. He retired and died in San Diego in 1902. My Grandfather, Charles F. Shiels, after working in the lumber trade in Cincinnati for several decades, started his own lumber business, Charles F. Shiels & Company, in 1891. His brother, Joseph, went to work for Charles shortly after the company was formed and worked there until he passed away in 1928. Charles married Ida Shrimpton and had eight children: Helen, Charles Jr., Alfred, Paul, William Eugene (S.J.), Mary Alice, then in 1910 had twins Elaine (Foley) and my father, Richard. After attending the University of Notre Dame, and then working for a number of years and becoming the Assistant Sawmill Manager for Potlatch Forests, Inc. in Lewiston, Idaho “Dick” returned to Cincinnati at the behest of his father in 1936 . Charles F. Shiels died in 1945 and his son, Paul, assumed ownership of the business. When Paul died in 1950 Richard bought the business from Paul’s widow, Frieda. 6 “Dick” married Marjorie DuBrul, the eighth of eleven children of Ernest F. and Anna McKenzie DuBrul, in 1939 and raised a family of eleven children: Patricia L. Carr, Hugh I. M.D., Mary C. McCarty, Elizabeth M. (Ph.D.), Frances A. Eagen, Daniel R., Marc F., Regina M. Davis, William Eugene II D.O., (deceased), Janet C. Nelson, and Martha A. Summa. The tradition of the Shiels being physicians was not lost as you can see. Richard’s untimely death in 1968 at the age of 58 forced Marjorie, who had eight children living at home at the time, to take over the lumber business which she ran for twenty years. During those twenty years sons Dan and Marc worked in the business and a smooth transition followed in 1988. Dan left the company in 2010. I purchased Dan’s half of the company and am running it today in it’s 128th year of operation. I married Leslie Glass in 1983 and we currently reside in Cincinnati. I graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1973 after being a founding member and instrumental (first President) in the formation of the University of Cincinnati Rugby Football Club in 1971 which led me to also being one of the founding members (first Club Captain) of the Cincinnati Rugby Football Club in 1974. My affiliation with the club continues to this day. I was a player coach (backs) for six years then my coaching career culminated in serving as the Head Coach (1989-1999) and taking the club to it’s first USA Rugby National Championship competition in 1996. After a year-long hiatus I was called back to coaching by the University of Cincinnati Rugby Football Club which I coached (2000-2006) until my old friend and rugby mate, Mike Barrett, took over the reins. I first became aware of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick when my former rugby coach, G.J.P. Mulvany, called me in late 1984 and said, “we’re starting a glee club, and you’re in!” I joined and have been a part of the growth and development of the glee club since it’s inception. I served on the Board of the Friendly Sons Foundation for two years while Kevin Connor was President. Patrick Lindsay encouraged me to run for President of the Society and I am fortunate to have the honor to serve for the 150th Anniversary of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Cincinnati. “God bless.” 7 Honored Speaker Jimmy Deenihan was born in 1952 in Co. Kerry Ireland. He was educated at St. Michaels College, Listowel, St. Marys College Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, London and the National College of Physical Education in Limerick. After graduating from college in 1975 he took up a position in Tarbert Comprehensive School, Co. Kerry as History and Physical Education teacher. He resigned from teaching when he entered politics in 1983. Jimmy also enjoyed great success on the playing field winning 5 All-Ireland Championships with Kerry and numerous Jimmy Deenihan other honors. He also played under age Rugby with the renowned Garryowen club in Limerick. During his playing career he toured the USA on numerous occasions and played in exhibition games in New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles. While on these visits he built up a strong rapport with the Irish Diaspora which has continued since and flourished during his many years in Politics. In November 1983 Jimmy was approached by Fine Gael, one of the largest political parties in Ireland to run for election to the Irish Parliament. Narrowly missing out on being elected he was subsequently appointed to the Irish Senate by the then Prime Minister, Garrett Fitzgerald. In 1987 he was elected to Parliament and served there in various capacities both in government and opposition until February 2016. From 1994 to 1997 he served as Minister of State for Food and Rural Development, 2011-2014, Minister for Arts and Heritage and from 2014-2016 Ireland's first Minister for the Diaspora. In opposition he served as spokesperson for Defence, Education, Tourism, Sport, Environmental Protection and Youth Affairs at different times. He was recognized by friend and foe alike as one of the hardest working TD’s in Dail Eireann. In the late 1980’s he visited Capitol Hill on a number of occasions lobbying for Immigration Reform because of the large number of undocumented Irish in the USA at that time. He also established a Sister-City twinning relationship between his home town Listowel and Los Gatos, CA in 1994. Over the years Jimmy developed very positive working relationships with a number of US Ambassadors in Dublin and many of them visited Co. Kerry to spend time with him there. Jimmy also has a long association with The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, San Diego. Since he retired from Politics Jimmy has taken up the position of Vita Project Ambassador to Eritrea in Africa. He is living with his wife Mary who is a retired teacher in Listowel, Co. Kerry 8 Our Honored Guest This year’s Honored Guest is Douglas F.
