Chapter 3 Ancient Egypt ANCIENT EGYPT AND EGYPTOLOGY ´ Stability and consistency in art for almost 3000 years! « Due to predictably of the Nile overflowing its banks annually, leaving black silt to fertilize fields « This cycle symbolized the creation and renewal of life, reflected in Egyptian myths. (Kleiner, p. 57) ´ The Rosetta Stone which provided the key to deciphering hieroglyphics, was discovered in 1799 by Napoleon and a troop of scholars. It had the same text in 3 sections: Greek, demotic (Late Egyptian), and Hieroglyphics. 2 ANCIENT EGYPT The Nile is a north-flowing river (due to elevation), originating in Lake Victoria and ending in the Mediterranean Sea. Thus, Upper Egypt is the upstream part of the Nile. 3 ROSETTA STONE John-Francois Champollion Ancient Egyptian writing was first adopted more than 5,000 years ago making it one of the earliest recorded written languages. Champollion published the first translation of the Rosetta Stone hieroglyphs in 1822, showing that the Egyptian writing system was a combination of phonetic and ideographic signs. Its secrets were lost to the modern world until the discovery of the Rosetta Stone - a stone carved in three languages: Egyptian, Demotic and Ancient Greek. The hieroglyphs were translated by comparing them to the Ancient Greek text and the mysteries of Egypt were finally revealed . What is the difference Hieroglyphic writing was in use from about 3200 BC until between Cuneiform and the late 4th century AD and changed very little during this Hieroglyphics? period and is very well

  • Mysteries of Egypt
Mysteries of Egypt Grandpa (Omar Sharif): No land on Earth possesses more wonders than Egypt... wonders long hidden, but revealed occasionally in a glint of gold... or a curious tale... OUR story begins with a death -- the death of an unusual boy. Worshipped as the son of RE, the Sun god, he was a pharaoh of Egypt 3,000 year ago. We don’t know how he died, only that his death was sudden and mysterious. His body was preserved in the manner of other pharaohs, and priests anointed his coffin to prepare him for his final journey -- into the world of the dead. The rituals had to be finished before his father, the Sun, descended into darkness. So this young Pharaoh was secured in his tomb -- surrounded by kingly treasures -- and his seal was pressed into its entrance. From that time on, it was to be a place of peace -- hidden and undisturbed throughout eternity. This young King’s name was Tutankhamun. For 3,000 year, King Tut and his tomb in the valley of Kings remained concealed beneath shifting sands. Other tombs were discovered and completely pillaged, but not his. Believing he could find it, an Englishman named Howard Carter mounted five arduous expeditions, but they yielded nothing. In 1922, he returned to Egypt for a sixth attempt. (Exchange in Egyptian) That year he brought a beautiful canary to brighten his spirits. (Egyptian exchange) The workmen called it the Golden Bird and told Carter it would bring them good luck. But as work began, success seemed a remote prospect..

  • Tutankhamun in Portugal Reports in the Portuguese Press (1922–1939)
Aegyptiaca. Journal of the History of Reception of Ancient Egypt Tutankhamun in Portugal Reports in the Portuguese Press (1922–1939) José das Candeias Sales and Susana Mota Introduction It is certainly no exaggeration to say that the pharaoh Tutankhamun is among the best-known pharaohs to non-experts in Egyptology. It may even be said that he is the best known of them all. However, this is not because of his exceptional or far-reaching governmental acts in the history of Egypt of his time. In fact, having ascended to the throne as a child (perhaps at eight years old) and having died before he reached the age of twenty, the young child who ruled Egypt in the fourteenth century BC for about ten years (1333–1323 BC)1 is best known for the exceptional discovery of his tomb (KV 62) in the Valley of the Kings, with the seals intact, about 3000 years after his death, by Howard Carter (1874– 1939) and his financier George Edward, the fifth Count of Carnarvon, commonly known as Lord Carnarvon (1866–1923). The amazing discovery that occurred on the morning of that Saturday, the fourth of November of 1922 (a stone staircase with fifteenth steps), the official opening of the tomb in the presence of Lord Carnarvon and his daughter Lady Evelyn Herbert on the 29th the November, and the ten years of excavation that followed, which brought into light thousands of artefacts (more than 5000), were unveiled in the international press in an unusual and unprecedented way. As a result of this massive publication of news and reports about the discovery and the excavation of the tomb of Tutankhamun, the name of the virtually incognito twelfth pharaoh of the New Kingdom, and of the main players in this “wonder- ! 1 Nicholas Reeves, The Complete Tutankhamun: The King, The Tomb, The Royal Treasure (Cairo: The American University in Cairo Press, 1990), 8.
