Television 3 Lucifer ist die Geschichte eines gefallenen Engels. Gelangweilt und unglücklich als Herr über die Hölle hat Lucifer Morningstar seinen Thron verlassen und ist nach Los Angeles gezogen. Dort arbeitet er mit der LAPD-Detektivin Chloe Decker zusammen und hilft ihr dabei, Verbrecher zu bestrafen. Charmant, charismatisch und teuflisch gutaussehend: Lucifer versteht es, Menschen so zu manipulieren, dass sie ihre tiefsten, dun- kelsten Geheimnisse bekennen. Das hilft Chloe dabei, für Gerechtigkeit zu sorgen. Doch Lucifer hat schnell gemerkt, dass Chloe ihn verwund- bar macht: Wenn er in seiner Nähe ist, kann der Teufel bluten wie jeder andere auch – eine beängstigende Erkenntnis, die seiner besten Freundin Mazikeen alias Maze überhaupt nicht zu Pass kommt. Maze ist ein Dämon im Körper einer wunderschönen, jungen Frau und sie [ SYNOPSIS ] will nichts mehr, als Los Angeles zu verlassen und in ihr Leben in der Hölle zurückzukehren. Aber Lucifer hat eine gute Zeit mit den Sterb- lichen und hat nicht vor, sie hinter sich zu lassen. Nachdem Lucifer am Ende der ersten Staffel vor Chloes Augen stirbt, ist die Verwirrung nach seiner Auferstehung jetzt umso größer. Wer ist er eigentlich? Chloe und ihr Ehemann Dan stehen außerdem privat und beruflich vor großen Problemen. Nachdem Dan zugegeben hat, in eine Korruptionsaffäre verwickelt zu sein, ist nicht nur ihre Be- ziehung, sondern auch sein Job beim LAPD gefährdet. In der zweiten Staffel muss Lucifer sich mit seinem Bruder Ame- nadiel zusammentun. Dieser ist zwar nicht davon angetan, dass Luci- fer sich weigert, in die Unterwelt zurückzukehren, aber nun haben sie ein gemeinsames Ziel: Sie müssen ihre Mutter finden, die aus der Hölle geflohen ist. Nachdem Lucifer nicht nach seinem Vater kommt, wird das Elternteil, dem er ähnlich ist, sicherlich ziemlich furchterregend sein. Dr. Linda ist mittlerweile von Lucifers Therapeutin zur Vertrau- ten geworden. Jetzt, da Lucifers Mutter auf freiem Fuß ist, sind be- sonders viele gute Ratschläge gefragt. Und wenn sie damit durch ist, wird sie wohl einen eigenen Therapeuten brauchen. 4 5 Kritisch: Die neue Gerichtsmedizinerin Ella macht Lucifer das Leben schwer. [ EPISODEN ] 1 — VERSTECKTE GEFAHREN Lucifer ist von der Flucht seiner Mutter aus der Hölle abge- lenkt, als er und Chloe den Mord an einer Schauspielerin un- tersuchen. In der Zwischenzeit wird Chloes Vertrauen in Lucifer durch die neue Gerichtsmedizinerin Ella auf die Probe gestellt. Amenadiel hofft, Lucifers wilde Seite zügeln zu können, jetzt, da Maze nicht mehr da ist. LÜGEN HABEN KURZE BEINE — 2 Lucifers Mutter, Charlotte, taucht am Tatort eines grässlichen Mordes auf. Sie pocht darauf, unschuldig zu sein, doch Lucifer zögert, ihre Geschichte zu glau- ben. Da er sie nicht alleine lassen will, bittet er Maze, auf sie aufzupassen – aber nicht zu foltern. So kann er weiter mit Chloe an dem Fall arbeiten. Die liebe Familie No. 1: Engel Amenadiel 6 versucht Teufelsbruder Lucifer zu beruhigen. SÜNDENFRESSER — 3 Lucifer und Chloe untersuchen einen grausamen Mord, nachdem ein Video des Verbrechens in so- zialen Medien auftaucht. Als ein zweites Video er- scheint, wird ihnen bewusst, dass sie es mit einem Serienmörder zu tun haben. Lucifers Mutter kehrt in der Zwischenzeit als Charlotte Richards zurück. Ursprünglich ist dessen Langzeitrivale Rolf Van Zandt (Gast- star Mark Dacascos) der Hauptverdächtige, aber die Ermittlungen gehen schnell in eine andere Richtung. In der Zwischenzeit taucht Lucifers Bruder Uriel (Gaststar Michael Imperioli) auf und Amenadiel muss Farbe bekennen, was seine verlorenen Kräfte an- geht. Außerdem streiten Uriel und Lucifer über Chloe und ihre Mutter. 8 6 — MONSTER Schuldig und selbstzerstörerisch streitet Lucifer während der Ermittlungen mit Chloe. Lucifer und Chloe suchen nach dem Mörder, gleichzeitig hat Luci- fer damit zu kämpfen, dass der neue Besitzer ihn vertreiben und das Gebäude abreißen will. Um sein Zuhause zu verteidigen, gibt Lucifer alles – und ist überrascht, dass Chloe ihn dabei unterstützt. In der Zwischenzeit schließen sich Maze und Amenadiel Charlotte an, die einen Plan gefasst hat: Sie will Lucifer so sehr verär- gern, dass er die Erde verlassen und in den Him- mel zurückkehren möchte. Best Buddies: Charlotte freundet sich mit Dr. Linda Martin an. 11 Date Night: Lucifer möchte sich mit Chloe eine schöne Zeit machen. 11 — STEWARDESS INTERRUPTUS Lucifer und Chloe haben einen gemeinsamen „Moment“, der jäh un- terbrochen wird. Mit der Spannung zwischen den beiden gestaltet es sich schwierig, den Mord an zwei Opfern zu untersuchen, die noch dazu zwei frühere Verflossene von Lucifer sind. Rettungsmission: Lucifer reist für Chloes Rettung sogar in die Hölle. 13 — EIN GUTER TAG ZUM STERBEN Lucifer muss das Gegenmittel für das Gift des Professors finden. Dafür reist er in die Hölle, um dessen Seele ausfindig zu machen. Wäh- rend er dort ist, wird er mit der Schuld an Uriels Tod konfrontiert. Charlotte reist Lucifer hinterher, um ihn zurückzuholen. Doch Lucifer fühlt sich von seinen Eltern verraten, denn er hat etwas entdeckt … Alpha Gamma: Lucifer auf Abwegen im College. 13 14 — CANDY MORNINGSTAR Zwei Wochen, nachdem Chloe fast gestorben wäre, ist Lucifer verschwunden. Although these texts are clearly popular, can they tell us anything else? Why are these same stories, and the action that occurs within them, repeated in an almost obsessive fashion? Not unlike traditional gothic texts that were primarily written in the late 18th Century or early 19th Century, the repetition and ritualistic nature of these tales hint at a trauma that must be worked through. The trauma that one can see in both contemporary and traditional gothic texts results from erasure of the feminine,and the continuance of pervadingacts of misogyny throughout. However, many contemporary gothic texts do not stop at simply recognizing this trauma, or working through it.Indeed, these texts have begun to imagine a new social contract between the sexes—which is the very relationship in which the original trauma occurs.

[INSERT FIGURE hamad.1 HERE] The widespread promotional use of this image, as opposed to one showcasing its genre, spectacle or blockbuster credentials to greater effect, manifestly indicated that fatherhood and familial relations would be thematically prominent. This thematic bent was commensurate with recent developments in Spielberg’s output and, as this chapter will ultimately contend, with a current trend in depictions of screen fathers, manifested across the spectrum of Hollywood’s male star led genres. One way of understanding the film’s thematic preoccupation with fatherhood is as a continuation of Spielberg’s longstanding concerns with fragmented and troubled families, through his output over time via recurring character types and scenarios like the inadequate father and child in peril. Spielberg scholars identify these as authorial concerns1 arising from his autobiographical investment in broken families and troubled fatherhood.2 War of the Worlds is thus a logical entry to his extant filmography in thematic terms, featuring a Spielbergian narrative impetus striving towards reuniting a fragmented family, in which the 2 H.
