    Deliver Us to Cinema: The Prince of Egypt and Cinematic Depictions of Religious Texts Kadii Lott Introduction There is a pervasive Hollywood culture of appropriating and commodifying biblical concepts and imagery into films that do not explicitly address the Abrahamic belief systems that consider the Old and New Testaments as sacred texts. Many such films received mixed reviews. Christian and Jewish groups have heavily criticised particular adaptations of scriptural stories, including Life of Brian,1 The Last Temptation of Christ,2 The Passion of Christ,3 and Noah,4 for their blasphemous or ill-intentioned treatment of biblical figures. Despite the protectiveness of religious people Kadii Lott received First Class Honours in Studies in Religion at the University of Sydney in 2020. 1 The 1979 religious satire reimagined the fictional life of a man named Brian who gets mistaken for Jesus. The film was considered blasphemous by some Christians who protested against the release and the film was banned in many countries upon its release, including in Ireland and Norway. Contact: [email protected] 1 Digital Surrealism: Visualizing Walt Disney Animation Studios Abstract There are a number of fruitful digital humanities approaches to cinema and media studies, but most of them only pursue traditional forms of scholarship by extracting a single variable from the audiovisual text that is already legible to scholars. Instead, cinema and media studies should pursue a mostly-ignored “digital-surrealism” that uses computer-based methods to transform film texts in radical ways not previously possible. This article describes one such method using the z-projection function of the scientific image analysis software ImageJ to sum film frames in order to create new composite images. When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes.

    Robert Wise’s The Day the Earth Stood Still Part I: A Religious Film? By Anton Karl Kozlovic Fall 2013 Issue of KINEMA ROBERT WISE’S THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL Part I: A RELIGIOUS FILM? Abstract Science fiction (SF) films have frequently been the home for subtextual biblical characters, particularly Christ-figures. Crafting these sacred subtexts can make the difference between an ordinary filmandan exceptional one. This investigation intends to explore the religious and other dimensions of the 1951 SF cult classic The Day the Earth Stood Still directed by Robert Wise. In Part 1 of this analytical triptych, the film’s reception as a UFO film with political, artificial intelligence (AI), police and philosophical dimensions was canvassed. It was argued that Wise’s film contains all of the above genre dimensions; however, it can bemore fully appreciated as a profoundly religious film wrapped in contemporary scientific garb. The forthcoming parts will explore the factual elements of this proposition in far greater analytical detail. Introduction: SF and Sacred Storytelling Historically speaking, science fiction (SF) films(1) have harboured numerous hidden biblical characters in typically covert forms. For example, Barry McMillan described many an SF alien as ”a ’transcendent’ being - a benign entity who brings wisdom and knowledge, the imparting of which brings resolution, insight and the beginnings of personal or political harmony” (360). Whilst Bonnie Brain argued that: ”The ascendancy of the aliens derives strongly from their aura of religious authority. Teachers, mystics, priests, or prophets, capable of ”miracles” and, in some cases, ”resurrection,” these aliens flirt with divinity” (226).
