From the his- torical demography to anthropology, this discipline has been benefi t from Cook and Bo- rah’s contributions to Carl Sauer’s. In this article, my contribution consists in broading the spectrum towards the European infl uence and particularly to the so-called Annales School. While it is true that this movement had a strong infl uence in Latin-American History, in contrast, in Environment Historians, such infl uence has not been compara- ble to quantity history or the history of prices. My purpose is to analyze the roots of this infl uence in Latin America, their scope and limits. Desde la de- mografía histórica hasta la antropología, esta disciplina se ha benefi ciado de los aportes de Cook y Borah hasta Carl Sauer. En este artículo mi contribución consistirá en am- pliar el espectro hacia la infl uencia europea y particularmente hacia la llamada Escuela de Annales. Si bien es cierto esta corriente tuvo una fuerte infl uencia en la historia latinoamericana, en cambio, en los historiadores del medio ambiente su infl uencia no ha sido equiparable al de la historia cuantitativa o la historia de los precios. Il est certain que ce courant a eu une forte infl uence sur l’histoire latino-américaine, alors que pour les historiens de l’environnement l’infl uence de celle-ci n’est pas comparable avec l’histoire quantitative ou l’histoire des prix. INTRODUCTION This paper reviews the infl uence of the French Annales School in the de- velopment of Latin American environmental historiography. I argue that while it is true that this school had a strong infl uence on Latin American history, for environmental historians this infl uence has not been compa- rable to that of quantitative history or the history of prices. Perhaps the origin of this situation can be traced to the school itself. While historians like Worster (1988),Crosby (1995) and Guha (1993)1 recognize an affi lia- tion between the Annales School and environmental history to the point where Guha makes Marc Bloch a model for ecological history, for Gen- eviève Massard this is not as clear and is ultimately a misunderstanding. 303 1 This work has benefi tted from the comments of Maurice Aymard, the working group on Historia Ambiental Latinoamericana, 2nd WEHC-Guimaraes and SEHAM-México. Historia Caribe - Volumen XII N° 30 - Enero-Junio 2017 pp 301-340 ALEJANDRO TORTOLERO VILLASEÑOR My objective here is to analyze this presumed misunderstanding, examine the roots of its infl uence in Latin America, particularly in Mexico, its ex- tent and its limitations2. 1. ANNALES AND THE ENVIRONMENT If we were to emphasize the relationship between the Annales School and the environment, we would begin by saying that in its quest for totality, this school assumed that history was predetermined, at least partially, by external forces to man that were not always neutral or foreign to him forc- es that are partly physical, visible, and practically immovable such as the geography or climate. Where Durkheim and Berr integrated philosophy and sociology into the history, Vidal de la Blache and his pupil Lucien Gallois, Lucien Febvre’s professor in the École Normale Supérieure, made social history an inte- gral part of geography. Through their efforts, agriculture became a gate- way to Annales. With this opening, an analysis of the “active and passive” aspects of the relationship between man and earth began. This reciprocal relationship of infl uences between nature and man resulted in the study of a way of life derived from the relationship between the environment and the social structure3. Later, in La terre et l’evolu- tion humaine (1927)5 he calls upon geohistory where the environment plays a pivotal role not only in the movement of goods but also in the evolution of ideas. Marc Bloch, for his part, strongly embraces geohistory, and in his classic work Les caractéres originaux de l’histoire rurale française (1931)6, he illustrates the agrarian landscapes of the Middle Ages, crop rotation, tillage methods, seeds, land claims, cultivation camps, tools, and farmhouses. This work illustrates the division in Europe between the cultivation of crops using a two-fi eld system or a three-year rotation as well as plowing techniques and the enormous importance of the abandonment of fallowing after the adoption of forage crops in the eighteenth century. In his later work Apologie pour l’histoire ou Metien d’historien (1949)7, posthu- mously published, Bloch tells us of a defi nitive way of understanding the landscape. He states: “But let us be aware once more of assuming a falsely geometric parallelism between the natural sciences and a science of men. From the view I have from my window, every scientist takes his own without concerning himself much with the bigger picture. The physicist explains the blue of the sky; the chemist, the water stream; the botanist, the grass. They leave the restoration of the landscape in the hands of others. This appears to me art should the painter or poet take on the responsibility of restoring the land.

The seminar will focus on manuscripts written in Latin; a basic knowledge of Latin is therefore a prerequisite. Format The seminar will meet for formal sessions on four mornings of each week, Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. During the afternoons, the instructor will make himself available for consultation; he will also hold occasional workshops on specific topics and anticipates that partici- pants may wish to meet regularly for guided group transcription sessions.

    Is There a Future for Italian Microhistory in the Age of Global History? Francesca Trivellato In the late 1970s and 80s, particularly after the appearance of Carlo Ginzburg’s The Cheese and the Worms (1976) and Giovanni Levi’s Inheriting Power (1985), Italian microhistory shook the ground of established historiographical paradigms and practices. Since then, as Anthony Grafton put it, “Microhistories have captivated readers, won places on syllabi, been translated into many languages – and enraged and delighted their [the authors’] fellow professionals” (2006, 62). Are the questions that propelled Italian microhistory still significant or have they lost impetus? How has the meaning of microhistory changed over the past thirty years? And what can this approach contribute nowadays, when ‘globalization’ and ‘global’ are the dominant keywords in the humanities and the social sciences – keywords that we hardly associate with anything micro? In what follows, I wish to put forth two arguments. I suggest that the potential of a microhistorical approach for global history remains underexploited. Since the 1980s, the encounter between Italian microhistory and global history has been confined primarily to the narrative form. A host of studies of individuals whose lives traversed multiple linguistic, political, and religious boundaries has enjoyed considerable success among scholars and the broad public alike. These are predicated on the idea that a micro- and biographical scale can best portray the entanglement of cultural traditions produced by the growing contacts and clashes between different societies that followed the sixteenth- century European geographical expansion. They also reflect a greater comfort among historians and the general reader, perhaps most pronounced in Anglophone countries, with narration rather than social scientific analysis.

All rights reserved. ii Reinventing Epic: Traditional Poetry and the Annales of Quintus Ennius John Francis Fisher Abstract The present scholarship views the Annales of Quintus Ennius as a hybrid of the Latin Saturnian and Greek hexameter traditions. This configuration overlooks the influence of a larger and older tradition of Italic verbal art which manifests itself in documents such as the prayers preserved in Cato’s De agricultura in Latin, the Iguvine Tables in Umbrian, and documents in other Italic languages including Oscan and South Picene. These documents are marked by three salient features: alliterative doubling figures, figurae etymologicae, and a pool of traditional phraseology which may be traced back to Proto-Italic, the reconstructed ancestor of the Italic languages. A close examination of the fragments of the Annales reveals that all three of these markers of Italic verbal art are integral parts of the diction the poem. Ennius famously remarked that he possessed three hearts, one Latin, one Greek and one Oscan, which the second century writer Aulus Gellius understands as ability to speak three languages.

Strunk Abstract: This paper explores Tacitus’ representation of Thrasea Paetus. Preliminary to analyzing this portrayal, I discuss two pas- sages often cited when exploring Tacitus’ political thought, Agricola 42.4 and Annales 4.20. I reject the former’s validity with regard to Thrasea and accept the latter as a starting point for comparing Tacitus’ depictions of Marcus Lepidus and Thrasea. Tacitus’ char- acterizations of Thrasea and Lepidus share the greatest resemblance in the trials of Antistius Sosianus and Clutorius Priscus, both of whom wrote verses offensive to the regime.

    THE DIVORCE OF AMERICANS IN FRANCE LINDYLL T. BATEs* The first French law authorizing divorce a vinculo matrimonii by judgment was enacted in 1792, the very day of the fall of the Bourbon Monarchy. Prior thereto, separation a mensa et thoro alone was countenanced by the strongly clerical King- dom. The rush to divorce under the new liberty was such that in the Year VI of the Republic the number of divorces exceeded that of marriages. The Code Napollon of. x8o3 established divorce for cause and even by mutual consent; though Napoleon's own divorce fron Josephine is the only known instance of the use of a. consent method under the Code. Divorce was abolished in x86 at the reestablishment of the Kingdom, and separation only could be had in France from that time until the Third Republic. The articles of the Civil Coda for divorce based upon cause were reEnacted by Law of July 27, 1884, the articles for divorce by mutual consent remain- ing abolished. With some amendments, this is the law that now governs the insti- tution. Today, divorce.is again frequent in France; separations are but a quarter as numerous. In i885, 4,277 divorces were recorded; in 1913 the figure had risen to 15,372; in 1921, to 2,o33. Now the figure exceeds 30,0o0. The ratio of divorce to population was 70 per hundred thousand in x92; in America it was then x35. About 85 per cent of the divorce petitions are granted. The wife is plaintiff in 65 per cent of the divorce suits.
