He continues to be present in our minds and hearts; he continues to communcate us his love for God and his love for man; he continues to inspire in one and all, especially in the young people, the enthusiasm for good and the courage to follow Jesus and his teachings. How can we sum up the life and evangelical witness of this great Pontiff? I will attend to do so by using two words: “fidelity” and “dedication”, total fidelity to God and unreserved dedication to his mission as Pastor of the universal Church. (…) In the first anniversary of his return to the Father's House, we are invited to accept anew the spiritual legacy he has bequeathed to us; we are urged, among other things, to live by seeking tirelessly the Truth that alone brings relief to our hearts. We are encou- raged not to be afraid to follow Christ in order to bring everyone the Gospel proclama- tion which is the leaven of a more fraternal and supportive humanity. May John Paul II help us from Heaven to continue on our way, remaining docile disciples of Jesus in order to be, as he himself loved to repeat to young people, “dawn watchmen” at the beginning of this third Christian millennium”. (Documentation et Information Africaines). Heute ist DIA die größte und bedeutendste katholische Presseagentur in Afrika. Joseph Ceuppens CICM, der Gründer der Agentur, begann 1949 mit einem Studien­ und Informationszentrum für den Kongo (Centre d'Etudes et d'Information congo­ lais) im damaligen Uopoldville. 1939 war er in den Kongo gekommen; er arbeitete zunächst als Missionar in der Diözese Inongo und später, während des Zweiten Weltkrieges, in der Hauptstadt Uopoldville. Die Arbeit in dem von ihm gegrün• deten Studien- und Informationszentrum brachte ihn auf die Idee, eine Presse­ agentur, die nicht nur auf den Kongo begrenzt sein sollte, zu gründen. Der damalige Generalsuperior der Patres von Scheut, P. van den Butten, dem Ceuppens 1956 seinen Plan vorlegte, war grundsätzlich einverstanden, wies aber auch darauf hin, daß eine afrikanische Nachrichtenagentur nicht allein Sache eines Ordens sein könne. So brachte P. Ceuppens im Juni 1956 seinen Plan vor die Vollversammlung der Bischöfe des Kongo und Ruanda--Burundis. Er fand deren Zustimmung und Unter­ stützung. So konnte Anfang 1957 die Arbeit der neuen Agentur beginnen. Mit­ arbeiterin war die belgische Journalistin de Schrijver. Das erste Bulletin erschien am 17. Januar 1957. Die Agentur, die heute in Telex-Verbindung mit dem europäischen Netz und ver­ schiedenen Städten des Kongo steht, bringt täglich vier Ausgaben ihres Pressedienstes heraus: 1.
