Seven study units are presented that address: (1) prehistory; (2) the ancient world; (3) the middle ages;(4) the early modern age; (5) the later modern age; (6) the inter-war period and World War II; and (7) the nuclear age. Each unit is divided into specific sections that contain: (1) generalization, concept, and objective statements; (2) a course outline; and (3) suggested learning activities. Appendices include: (1) selected world history computer activities; (2) world history terms; (3) lists of geographical locations; (4) an overview of major periods and trends in world art and music; (5) 136 references; (6) a sample unit; (7) suggestions and references for evaluation techniques; (8) foreign diplomatic and consular offices in the United States;(9) K-12 social studies skills' charts; and (10) an index organized by time periods, geographical or cultural areas, topics, and page number. The decision to increase the number of units in social studies needed for graduation is a reflection of theBoard's and the public's interest in improving the academic preparation of secondary students. The historical knowledge acquired and the skills develop- ed through the study of World History will help studentsto understand more completely the complex, interdependent world in which we all must live and work. This guide is intended as a curricular resource for thoseteachers who must provide instruction to stu- dents who select World History as the third required unit ofsocial studies. Its development represents the combined efforts of Department of Education staff andoutstanding World History teachers ia every geographic region in the Sate. The Louisiana Department of Education is pleased to haveproduced this World History Guide as part of its continuing effort to improve the quality of education inLouisiana's schools.     Japan Border Review, No.Summary 7 (2017) Summary Austria-Hungary’s Ultimatum of 23 July 1914 Reconsidered: The Background of Vienna’s Decision-Making in the Memorandum of Friedrich von Wiesner MURAKAMI Ryo The immediate cause of the First World War was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand at Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. Gavrilo Princip, who killed Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie, was a Serbian nationalist and a member of the Black Hand Society. The Austrian government thought that Serbia was behind the affair. In its response, Vienna sought to settle its decade-long dispute with Serbia. On 23 July 1914, the Austrian government gave an ultimatum to the Serbian government. Many researchers argue that Austria deliberately made demands that it knew Serbia could not accept. Furthermore, it is often indicated that Vienna’s ultimatum was not aimed at the Black Hand Society, but at the National Defense (in Serbian, Narodna Odbrana). Many researchers have carried out research into the diplomatic crisis (the so-called July Crisis) between the assassination at Sarajevo and the British declaration of war against Germany. Although Vienna’s declaration of war caused a chain reaction in Europe, historiographic studies still do not pay sufficient attention to either the process that led to the ultimatum, or to the Austrian justification for war against Serbia. In this article, I point out the importance of Friedrich von Wiesner, adviser on international law at the Austrian foreign ministry, during the July Crisis in Vienna. He participated by drawing up the ultimatum and he wrote the document (a memorandum) detailing charges against Serbia.

She has just left her room in the sorority house and is on her way to the art building. She is dressed for class, in carefully coordinated clothes that were all purchased from the same company: a crisp white shirt embroidered with her initials, a cardigan sweater in Kelly green wool, and a pleated skirt, also Kelly green, that reaches right to her knees. On her feet, she wears brown loafers and white socks. She carries a neatly packed bag, filled with freshly washed clothes: pants and a big work shirt for her painting class this morning; and shorts, a T-shirt and tennis shoes for her gym class later in the day. She’s walking rather rapidly, because she’s dying for a cigarette and knows that proper sorority girls don’t ever smoke unless they have a roof over their heads. She can’t wait to get into her painting class and light up. Following all the rules of the sorority is sometimes a drag, but it’s a lot better than living in the dormitory, where girls have ten o’clock curfews on weekdays and have to be in by midnight on weekends. (Of course, the guys don’t have curfews, but that’s just the way it is.) Anyway, it’s well known that most of the girls in her sorority marry well, and she can’t imagine anything she’d rather do after college.

    CHICAGO, ILLINOIS JANUARY 2 – 5, 2014 WELCOME TO CHICAGO! Dear AIA Members and Colleagues, Welcome to Chicago for the 115th Annual Meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America. This year’s meeting combines an exciting program presenting cutting-edge research with the unique opportunity to socialize, network, and relax with thousands of your peers from the US, Canada, and more than 30 foreign countries. Appropriately for an urban venue settled in the 19th century by ethnic Europeans, this year’s meeting will feature several sessions on East European archaeology. And sessions devoted to heritage and preservation and digital methodologies in archaeology touch upon increasingly central concerns in the discipline. Back by popular demand are the undergraduate paper session and the Lightning Session. We are indebted to Trustee Michael L. Galaty and the Program for the Annual Meeting Committee that he chairs for fashioning such a stimulating program.     27 January 2005 Ref.: 2005-04E Landet Church adorns new thematic coin On 28 January 2005, Danmarks Nationalbank issues the sixth in its series of thematic 20-krone coins with specially chosen Danish towers as the motif on the reverse. Seen through chestnut leaves from the grave of Elvira Madigan and Six- ten Sparre, the tower of Landet Church on the island of Tåsinge reaches towards the sky on the reverse of the new thematic coin. Landet Church is a traditional Danish village church, built around 1150-1200 in the Age of the Valdemars, with the tower and porch added later. The church tower was built in 1634. The sculptor Øivind Nygaard is the artist behind the tower motif from Landet Church. The hearts and pistol that Øivind Nygaard has woven into the chestnut leaves around the tower symbolise the tragic love story of Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre. "In addition to showing a Danish church tower, the pictorial metaphors seen on the coin, combined with the view of the tower of Landet Church, are intended to tell a story and interpret the history and mythology of the church," Øivind Nygaard ex- plains. The Landet Church tower coin is issued as a 20-krone coin in an edition of 1.2 million. It is of the same size and alloy as the ordinary 20-krone coin in circulation. The face of the coin shows a profile of the Queen by the sculptor, Professor Mogens Møller. The new thematic coin can be purchased from banks and Danmarks Na- tionalbank from 28 January 2005.

Webber, Advisor Johanna Sellman Philip Armstrong Copyrighted by David Bond 2017 Abstract The construction of stories about identity, origins, history and community is central in the process of national identity formation: to mould a national identity – a sense of unity with others belonging to the same nation – it is necessary to have an understanding of oneself as located in a temporally extended narrative which can be remembered and recalled. Amid the “memory boom” of recent decades, “memory” is used to cover a variety of social practices, sometimes at the expense of the nuance and texture of history and politics. The result can be an elision of the ways in which memories are constructed through acts of manipulation and the play of power. This dissertation examines practices and practitioners of nostalgia in a particular context, that of Tunisia and the Mediterranean region during the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Using a variety of historical and ethnographical sources I show how multifaceted nostalgia was a feature of the colonial situation in Tunisia notably in the period after the First World War. In the postcolonial period I explore continuities with the colonial period and the uses of nostalgia as a means of contestation when other possibilities are limited.
